    1 Heritage Languages Among South Asian Americans Bryn Mawr College Spring 2014 Karuna Doraiswamy Abstract* This thesis explores second generation South Asian Americans' relationships with their heritage languages; specifically, the ways in which these relationships might challenge current convention regarding the categorization of heritage and non-heritage learners along a linear spectrum. This thesis also examines the extent to which the decision to (re)leam one's heritage language might be considered a necessary step to earning cultural legitimacy in the diasporic community, a symbolic reclamation of one's history, or even a performative act intended to better match oneself to the dominant perception of what it means to be South Asian. 1 Introduction This section explains basic issues regarding heritage languages in general, including current definitional debates, research on childhood interaction with heritage languages, and the second generation's attitude toward their ancestral language and culture. 1.1 Defining heritage language learners English has long been the dominant language spoken in the United States, to the detriment of many indigenous and immigrant language communities. Bush administration’s foreign policy are becoming. “Acquiring additional burdens by engag- ing in new wars of liberation is the last thing the United States needs,” declared one Bush critic in Foreign Affairs. “The principal problem is the mistaken belief that democracy is a talisman for all the world’s ills, and that the United States has a responsibility to promote dem- ocratic government wherever in the world it is lacking.”1 Does this sound like a Democratic pundit bashing Bush for par- tisan gain? Quite the contrary. The swipe came from Dimitri Simes, president of the Nixon Center and copublisher of National Interest. Simes is not alone in calling on the administration to reclaim the party’s pre-Reagan heritage—to abandon the moralistic, Wilsonian, neoconservative dream of exporting democracy and return to a more limited and realistic foreign policy that avoids the pitfalls of Iraq. 1. They are now 5-0 after their win against the Radicals. Chicago's offense has so many weapons and they manage to take smart shots. In their game this past weekend, their defense played better than they have before. If they keep up this level of play they will have a good shot at the title. 2. DC Breeze DC is moving up a spot this week. Last weekend they beat the Empire in impressive fashion. They won by three, but New York scored a couple goals in the final minutes of the game. DC’s offense performed extremely well - as they always do - and their defense managed to get a ton of run through Ds. 3. New York Empire New York is stepping down from their pedestal this week. After being at the top for the first five weeks of the season, the Empire lost to the Breeze. The Empire allowed the Breeze to get too many run through Ds that could have been fixed. The Empire are still a great team and are still scary to face. 4. Raleigh Flyers The Flyers managed to beat the Cannons last week. With that being said, they are staying in the number four spot this week. They have another game against the Cannons next week, which should be another easy win. This team has a lot of potential to make it deep into the playoffs this year.
