It deals principally with the poetry of John Davidson though, where appropriate, there is discussion of his plays, novels and short-stories. Chapter 1 deals with Davidson’s formative influences and stresses the importance of his background in forming some of the most fundamental and enduring concerns within his writing. Particular focus is given to outlining the influence of factors such as Knoxian Calvinism, the Scottish social environment and landscape, and issues of rebellion and dissociation expressed through recurrent themes of familial tension and division. Chapter 2 aims to illustrate that Davidson's displaced status is a key factor in producing the innovative modernist propensity and style of his work. Issues of identity and displacement are examined as factors which motivated Davidson’s experiments with the form and subject-matter of his poetry and influenced his use of multiplicity of voice, dramatic persona, irony, dualism and contradiction. Davidson’s subsequent influence upon the writing and thought of Hugh MacDiarmid is also examined in this section. Chapter 3 examines Davidson's attempts to engage with and manipulate concepts of Scottish and British identity; and his preoccupation with themes of war, empire and the nature of the heroic nation. Chapter 4 examines the relationship of Davidson's ideas to Scottish thought. Davidson is contextualised in this respect through the use of comparison with writers such as James Thomson and Robert Buchanan, and more particularly to Thomas Carlyle. In so doing the aim is to complement rather than replace existing studies which neglect this area. Davidson has traditionally been viewed either as a minor English writer or, at best, as a marginal figure within Scottish literature. In comparison with contemporaries such as R.L. Stevenson and James Barrie, Davidson remains the lesser known figure. Apart from short essays by Tom Hubbard, R.M. Wenley, Andrew Turnbull and Hugh MacDiarmid, none of the major studies of Davidson (including book-length works) deal in any depth with his relationship to Scottish literature or culture. In the majority of critical accounts Davidson has been readily compared with a variety of writers and thinkers ranging from Nietzsche1, Ibsen and Swinburne to Eliot and Woolf2, and to a range of literary movements from the fin de siecle and decadence of the 1890s3 to the development of modernism and post-modernism4. What the reader will not find is an extended analysis of Davidson within a Scottish literary context or detailed comparison with other Scottish writers. Critics have failed to appreciate the extent to which many of Davidson’s ideas have their origins in his formative experience or the enduring influence of that experience upon him. Most commentators and critics ignore or forget the fact that Davidson was bom in Scotland and did not leave until he was thirty-two years of age;5 he therefore spent roughly two-thirds of his life in Scotland. Davidson was brought up directly under the influence of the Scottish religious and educational system. He was educated at Edinburgh university, he worked in laboratories as an analyst's assistant and was privy to the practical rational tradition of Scottish thought and industry; he

Vol. 1: Text Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature Clive Simmonds May 2013 1 Abstract This thesis examines the publishing history of Algernon Charles Swinburne during his lifetime (1837-1909). The first chapter presents a detailed narrative from his first book in 1860 to the mid 1870s: it includes the scandal of Poems and Ballads in 1866; his subsequent relations with the somewhat dubious John Camden Hotten; and then his search to find another publisher who was to be Andrew Chatto, with whom Swinburne published for the rest of his life. It is followed by a chapter which looks at the tidal wave of criticism generated by Poems and Ballads but which continued long after, and shows how Swinburne responded. The third and central chapter turns to consider the periodical press, important throughout his career not just for reviewing but also as a very significant medium for publishing poetry. Chapter 4 on marketing looks closely at the business of producing and of selling Swinburne’s output. Finally Chapter 5 deals with some aspects of his career after the move to Putney, and shows that while Theodore Watts, his friend and in effect his agent, was making conscious efforts to reshape the poet, some of Swinburne’s interests were moving with the tide of public taste; how this was demonstrated in particular by his volume of Selections and how his poetic oeuvre was finally consolidated in the Collected Edition at the end of his life.

This dissertation explores the ways that Clough’s and Arnold’s understanding of their medium was shaped by a sustained engagement with this complex and heterogeneous cluster of linguistic ideas including the persistence of eighteenth-century concepts of language, Romantic philology, and the emergence of historicist/comparativist orientations to language that all co-exist during the Victorian period. I argue that Arnold’s and Clough’s evolving understanding of language emerges from the ways in which Victorian philological insights are mediated through the Victorian educational establishment, and subsequently has such a mediated understanding is translated into specific and significant aesthetic features in their poetry such as the use of slang or the deployment of the simile. Further, because both Clough and Arnold subscribed to the central creed of Victorian philology—that language indexed cultural health—, the ii grounding of such aesthetic and formal qualities of the poems in this discourse allows us to recover or foreground additional aspects of the political and cultural resonances of Arnold’s and Clough’s poetry.

    1132 James Galt_Layout 1 29/03/2012 17:32 Page 1 John Galt 1779 - 1839 1132 James Galt_Layout 1 29/03/2012 17:32 Page 2 John Galt 1779 - 1839 John Galt was born in Irvine in 1779, the son of a sea captain who traded with the West Indies. In 1789 the family moved to Greenock and much of Galt’s fiction draws from the localities of the west coast of Scotland where he spent his youth. He was a sickly child and much of his time was spent listening to the traditional tales of his mother and the local women of Greenock, an influence that feeds into Galt’s gift for storytelling and his acute ear for regional dialect. John Galt was possessed of a pragmatic as well as an imaginative turn of mind. He had a keen interest in business and politics and always maintained that he regarded writing as a secondary profession. From 1796 - 1804 Galt worked as a junior justice clerk in Greenock before setting off for London on a sudden impulse of restless ambition. Here he studied political economy and commercial history and practise but failed to really make his mark on the business world despite several promising ventures. Around the age of twenty-four Galt began writing. He experimented in verse but was an inferior poet. Since ottava rima is a two-fold structure, comprising an alternately rhyming sestet followed by an independent couplet, it encourages the expression of dialectical ideas. Byron's prosodic virtuosity uses this potential to create a multivalent tissue of tones which is essentially—and almost infinitely—ironic. A view of prosody is developed here which is unique in its perception of the poem's existence in terms of a reading that unfolds in "real time." For various reasons, "reader-response" critics have not yet taken much cognizance of prosody.
