The Case of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre National Park (Italy)
sustainability Article Strategies and Actions to Recover the Landscape after Flooding: The Case of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre National Park (Italy) Rosalba D’Onofrio * ID and Elio Trusiani * School of Architecture and Design “E. Vittoria,” University of Camerino, 63100 Ascoli Piceno, Italy * Correspondence: [email protected] (R.D.); [email protected] (E.T.); Tel.: +39-347-654-1716 (R.D.); +39-335-661-4434 (E.T.) Received: 31 January 2018; Accepted: 6 March 2018; Published: 8 March 2018 Abstract: European territories are fragile places in which landslides and flooding have occurred with a high frequency in recent decades, risking the safety of settlements and people and the integrity of the landscape. In many cases, recourse has been made to geotechnical and hydraulic interventions that have been rather non-uniform and partial and which, in prestigious areas, have made intervention after the fact problematic in recovering/mitigating what was done with extreme urgency. This paper reports on theoretical/applied research that implements methodological, multi-system experimentation and interdisciplinary skills for a project to recover the landscape within the Cinque Terre National Park (World Heritage Site, Italy). This recovery is capable of responding to the demand for protection, conservation, transformation and management of this cultural landscape par excellence. The methodological approach, the results of the research and the planning solutions span two scales—territorial and local—thereby highlighting the need for an approach to both micro- and macro-scale knowledge of the cultural landscape system to understand its structure and elements and to intervene with the proper planning sensitivity. -

We’ve passed our working week in San Terenzo (28.5. 2006-2.6.2006) which is also part of Lerici. These two bays belong to the province of La Spezia and the region is called Liguria. There are two burgs which show the ends of Lerici. Further north of the coast is the province Cinque Terre. Some of us will visit this place in the afternoon of our last day. For us Lerici is very friendly, because of the coloured houses and the Mediterranean at- mosphere. There are some little beaches which are made by human working. The sand didn’t find his way by himself, the sand was transporting by a crane. If you look around you can see a lot of green. We like this pure na- ture. There are also a lot of nice restaurants with de- licious Italian food. The area is called the Poet’s Gulf, because of two famous poets who have lived here. -

PORTOVENERE ITALY he ancient town of Portovenere looks T as if a brilliant impressionist painting has come to life. This romantic sentiment may not have been shared by those defending or assaulting the town over the past 1,000 years. However, today it can be said with relative cer- tainty that there is little chance of an attack by the Republic of Pisa, Saracen pirates, barbaric hordes or French Emperors. In other words, relax, have fun and enjoy your day in lovely, peaceful Portovenere. The Palm Landscapes of the Italian Riviera Pietro Piana, Charles Watkins and Ross Balzaretti University of Nottingham
The Palm Landscapes of the Italian Riviera Pietro Piana, Charles Watkins and Ross Balzaretti University of Nottingham Abstract Palm trees are today a characteristic feature of tropical tourist landscapes around the world from Caribbean to the Maldives. They are also a distinctive element of Mediterranean landscapes. On the Italian Riviera they are frequently found in the grounds of villas and hotels, at railway stations and in public squares. This paper examines the changing landscapes of the palm trees of the Italian Riviera over the last 300 years. Palms, particularly Phoenix dactylifera, were an important element of the local economy cultivated especially for palm fronds to be sold for religious festivals. The widespread presence of palm trees gave stretches of the Ligurian coast an almost tropical character, especially around Bordighera and San Remo. These coastal towns became major health resorts in the late nineteenth century and international tourists and residents celebrated this exotic landscape. The palms became important subjects for amateur and professional artists and photographers and they proliferated in gardens, as street trees and in horticultural collections. They became signature trees for these wealthy therapeutic landscapes but rapid building development and the decline of the palm trade means that only fragments of the old palm plantations remain today and these are in need of careful conservation. Keywords: Palm trees, Liguria, landscape, British travellers, Topographical Art Introduction Trees and vegetation have always had a major role in the characterization and visual perception of the landscape. Their distribution, density, shape and size reveals much about cultural and physical associations between people and the landscape (Watkins 2014). -
