YAHWEH vERsus BAALISM A THEOLOGICAL READING OF THE GIDEON-ABIMELECH NARRATIVE WOLFGANG BLUEDORN A thesis submitted to Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities April 1999 ABSTRACT This study attemptsto describethe contribution of the Abimelech narrative for the theologyof Judges.It is claimedthat the Gideonnarrative and the Abimelechnarrative need to be viewed as one narrative that focuseson the demonstrationof YHWH'S superiority over Baalism, and that the deliverance from the Midianites in the Gideon narrative, Abimelech's kingship, and the theme of retribution in the Abimelech narrative serve as the tangible matter by which the abstracttheological theme becomesnarratable. The introduction to the Gideon narrative, which focuses on Israel's idolatry in a previously unparalleled way in Judges,anticipates a theological narrative to demonstrate that YHWH is god. YHwH's prophet defines the general theological background and theme for the narrative by accusing Israel of having abandonedYHwH despite his deeds in their history and having worshipped foreign gods instead. YHWH calls Gideon to demolish the idolatrous objects of Baalism in response, so that Baalism becomes an example of any idolatrous cult. Joash as the representativeof Baalism specifies the defined theme by proposing that whichever god demonstrateshis divine power shall be recognised as god. The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative.

Judges 12 – Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon – Radio Show #246 I. In the book of Judges, we have a brief record of the early history (the first centuries) of the history of the land of Israel. We see the leaders God chose, judges, who ruled under Jehovah, the King. Through the lives and work of these judges, we can learn about God’s works and ways. II. Jephthah, after getting the victory over the Ammonites, came home and was met by his daughter. He had vowed to dedicate the first thing out of his house to the LORD OR offer it as a burnt offering. He dedicated his daughter to Jehovah, which in this case meant that she remained unmarried, a perpetual virgin. Now, he returns home only to face the outrages of Ephraim. III. The Outrages of the Tribe of Ephraim. A. Judges 12:1. Ephraim comes north to confront Jephthah at his home. The same tribe that caused Gideon trouble, Judges 8:1. They are even more unreasonable and outrageously violent! They threaten to destroy him and his family with fire. B. Verse 2. He reminds them that he was in a great and manly struggle against the sons of Ammon. He did call for their help, but they did not come to save him. C. Verse 3. When they did not rescue him, he took his soul in his hands and passed over to fight the sons of Ammon. The LORD acted to give them into his power. Why, then, have they come up now to fight him? Thus he gives them a peaceful answer, but this time the outrageously jealous Ephraimites are beyond reason.

WAY* Abstract: The notices about the so-called “minor judges” (Judg 3:31; 10:1–5; 12:8–15) are strategically arranged in the literary structure of the book of Judges. They are “minor” only in the sense that they are shorter than the other stories, but their selective thematic emphases (espe- cially on foreign deliverers, royal aspirations, outside marriages, “canaanization,” the number twelve, etc.) indicate that they are included with editorial purpose. The minor judges therefore have major importance for understanding the theological message of the book. Key words: book of Judges, canaanization, donkeys, foreigners, marriage with outsiders, minor judges, royal aspirations, seventy, twelve The book of Judges is a somewhat neglected book in Christian pulpits and Bible curricula today. 1 Survey of the Old Testament – The Book of Judges INTRODUCTION: The events described in the book of Judges took place during the period between after the Joshua’s death to the period before the birth of Samuel the prophet. The time during which God gave Israel “judges” to deliver them from oppression by their enemies in Canaan. Judges has 21 chapters. AUTHOR: Likely to be Samuel or Ezra. DATE WRITTEN: 1086-1035 B.C. (?) PURPOSES: To review Israel's history following the conquest and prior to the Monarchy; and to demonstrate the consequence of sinful rebellion, in spite of God's repeated gracious provision of political and spiritual leaders. MAIN THEME: This book records for us the work of 13 of the 15 judges called by the Lord, who were actually military leaders during this period of the history of Israel. It also portrays for us the roller coaster ride of history depicting the rise and fall of Israel as God’s people where we will see a series of relapses into idolatry and then followed by oppressions by Israel's enemies because of their evil ways. JETS 48/3 (September 2005) 491!500 THE MYSTERIOUS NUMBERS OF THE BOOK OF JUDGES ANDREW E. STEINMANN* The chronology of the book of Judges has always presented a challenge. Many have noted that simply adding up the various years of the judges and foreign oppressions as listed in the book yields 410 years, and this does not include the time for the deaths of Joshua and the elders who served with him (Judg 2:7!8). * Even if one assumes that the early date for the Exodus is correct (1446 BC, 479 years before Solomon began to build the Temple in the fourth year of his reign [967 BC]; 1 Kgs 6:1),2 this would mean that be- tween the end of Joshua's conquest (1400 BC; Josh 14:10) and the beginning of David's reign (1009 BC) there is only 389 years. This is not adequate time for the events in Judges to have taken place, much less to account for the deaths of Joshua and the elders, the judgeships of Eli and Samuel, and the reign of Saul. B. It means one who decides, who vindicates, who delivers, or one who leads or governs. C. These leaders were not governors of all Israel. 1. They were mainly local individuals who led certain tribes of Israel to freedom over their oppressors. D. There is a repeated pattern in the book of Judges: 1. “the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD” a. This phrase is found first in Judges 2:11. It is then repeated in Judges 3:7. b. After that, it changes slightly to “And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD…”. (Judges 3:12; 4:1; 6:1; 10:6; 13:1). c. More times than not, the evil involved the worship of the idols of the Canaanites: Baal (plural form “Baalim”) and Ashtaroth (Judges 2:11-13). 1) Baal, which meant “master” or “lord” was one of the principle gods. 2) Ashtaroth was one of Baal’s companions, the goddess of love and fertility. 3) Between these two idols were, supposedly, control of weather, crops, and offspring. 2. “He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about,” (Judges 2:14; 3:8; 4:2; and 10:7.) a. This is the statement often found after mention is made of the “burning” anger of God concerning the evil being done by the Israelites.

“God's Honorable Mentions” (Judges 10:1-5; 12:8-15)
“God’s Honorable Mentions” (Judges 10:1-5; 12:8-15) The judgeship of Jephthah (Judges 10:6–12:7) is framed by a brief mention of the five so-called “minor judges” (10:1–5; 12:8–15). For several reasons, their role in ancient Israel seems to have differed from the other judges: 1. Each is mentioned only briefly in a notation containing primarily genealogical information. 2. Missing is any indication that they led Israel in battle against a foreign enemy. 3. The length of time which each served is given in an exact number of years rather than as a round number. 1 A brief biography of the five Judges follows: • Tola (Judges 10:1–2): A bare minimum is recounted about Tola. He saved Israel and judged for twenty–three years. • Jair (Judges 10:3–5): Jair had thirty sons who rode thirty donkeys and controlled thirty towns. He judged Israel twenty–two years. • Ibzan (Judges 12:8–10): Ibzan, from Bethlehem, judged Israel seven years. He had thirty sons and daughters. • Elon (Judges 12:11–13): Elon, from Zebulun, judged Israel ten years. • Abdon (Judges 12:14–15): Abdon, from Ephraim, judged Israel eight years. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode seventy donkeys. The ministries of these minor judges teach two lessons, one negative and the other positive. Negatively they did not change any of the previous problems in Israel but seem to have maintained the status quo. The fact that several of the judges fathered extremely large families points to their living like the eastern kings of their day.
