  • Christian Names for Catholic Boys and Girls
CHRISTIAN NAMES FOR CATHOLIC BOYS AND GIRLS CHRISTIAN NAMES FOR CATHOLIC BOYS AND GIRLS The moment has arrived to choose a Christian name for the baptism of a baby boys or girl. What should the child be called? Must he/she receive the name of a saint? According to the revised Catholic Church Canon Law, it is no longer mandatory that the child receive the name of a saint. The Canon Law states: "Parents, sponsors and parish priests are to take care that a name is not given which is foreign to Christian sentiment." [Canon # 855] In other words, the chosen name must appeal to the Christian community. While the names of Jesus and Judas are Biblical in nature, the choice of such names would result in controversy. To many, the Name Jesus is Sacred and the Most Holy of all names. Because Judas is the disciple who betrayed Jesus, many feel this would be a poor choice. Equally, names such as 'cadillac' or 'buick' are not suitable because they represent the individual person's personal interest in certain cars. The following is a short list of names that are suitable for boys and girls. Please keep in mind that this list is far from complete. NAMES FOR BOYS Aaron (Heb., the exalted one) Arthur (Celt., supreme ruler) Abel (Heb., breath) Athanasius (Gr., immortal) Abner (Heb., father of light) Aubrey (Fr., ruler) Abraham (Heb., father of a multitude) Augustine (Dim., of Augustus) Adalbert (Teut., nobly bright) Augustus (Lat., majestic) Adam (Heb., the one made; human Austin (Var., of Augustine) being; red earth) Adelbert (Var., of Adalbert) Baldwin (Teut., noble friend) Adrian (Lat., dark) Barnabas (Heb., son of consolation) Aidan (Celt., fire) Barnaby (Var., of Bernard) Alan (Celt., cheerful) Bartholomew (Heb., son of Tolmai) Alban (Lat., white) Basil (Gr., royal) Albert (Teut., illustrious) Becket (From St.

  • A Theological Reading of the Gideon-Abimelech Narrative
YAHWEH vERsus BAALISM A THEOLOGICAL READING OF THE GIDEON-ABIMELECH NARRATIVE WOLFGANG BLUEDORN A thesis submitted to Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities April 1999 ABSTRACT This study attemptsto describethe contribution of the Abimelech narrative for the theologyof Judges. It is claimedthat the Gideonnarrative and the Abimelechnarrative need to be viewed as one narrative that focuseson the demonstrationof YHWH'S superiority over Baalism, and that the deliverance from the Midianites in the Gideon narrative, Abimelech's kingship, and the theme of retribution in the Abimelech narrative serve as the tangible matter by which the abstracttheological theme becomesnarratable. The introduction to the Gideon narrative, which focuses on Israel's idolatry in a previously unparalleled way in Judges, anticipates a theological narrative to demonstrate that YHWH is god. YHwH's prophet defines the general theological background and theme for the narrative by accusing Israel of having abandonedYHwH despite his deeds in their history and having worshipped foreign gods instead. YHWH calls Gideon to demolish the idolatrous objects of Baalism in response, so that Baalism becomes an example of any idolatrous cult. Joash as the representativeof Baalism specifies the defined theme by proposing that whichever god demonstrateshis divine power shall be recognised as god. The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative.

  • The Journey of the Magi: a Lyric Monologue for First and Second Voices and Three-In-One Character(S)
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, December 2017, Vol. 7, No. 12, 1511-1529 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2017.12.003 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Journey of the Magi: A Lyric Monologue for First and Second Voices and Three-in-One Character(s) Robert Keir Shepherd Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Madrid, Spain Although T. S. Eliot’s “The Journey of the Magi” is a religious poem in the profoundest sense, the title of my paper is intended to give only a sly wink at Trinitarianism. My real object is to explain how Eliot contrived to manufacture a poem which, at first glance, resembles a dramatic monologue (generally understood as a poem for one voice—that of a historical/fictional/ mythological character addressing a silent listener, group of listeners or reader), yet which is slowly revealed as a lyrical monologue (for the poet’s own voice) which yet—and this quite intentionally—contains considerably more than mere echoes of another two speakers: namely a Magus and the biblical translator and, most famously, sermon writer Archbishop Launcelot Andrewes (1555-1626) court preacher to James 1 and Charles 1 of England. I wish to show how Eliot, in writing what is ultimately confessional verse, goes out of his way to hoodwink the reader by allowing the first two of his “{The} Three Voices of Poetry” (1957) to overlap with and then incorporate the third. His own descriptions of these voices are (i) lyric, defined as “the poet talking to himself”, (ii) that of the single speakerwho gives a (dramatic) monologue1 “addressing an {imaginary} audience in an assumed voice” and (iii) that of the verse dramatist “who attempts to create a dramatic character speaking in verse when he {i.e.

  • The Indexing of Welsh Personal Names
The indexing of Welsh personal names Donald Moore Welsh personal names sometimes present the indexer with problems not encountered when dealing with English names. The Welsh patronymic system of identity is the most obvious; this was normal in the Middle Ages, and traces of its usage survived into the mid-nineteenth century. Patronymics have since been revived as alternative names in literary and bardic circles, while a few individuals, inspired by the precedents of history, are today attempting to use them regularly in daily life. Other sorts of alternative names, too, have been adopted by writers, poets, artists and musicians, to such effect that they are often better known to the Welsh public than the real names. A distinctive pseudonym has a special value in Wales, where a restricted selection of both first names and surnames has been the norm for the last few centuries. Apart from the names themselves, there is in Welsh a linguistic feature which can be disconcerting to those unfamiliar with the language: the 'mutation' or changing of the initial letter of a word in certain phonetic and syntactic contexts. This can also occur in place-names, which were discussed by the present writer in The Indexer 15 (1) April 1986. Some of the observations made there about the Welsh language will be relevant here also. Indexing English names 'Fitzwarin family' under 'F' and 'Sir John de la Mare' According to English practice a person is indexed under 'D' (the last, though French, being domiciled in under his or her surname. First names, taken in England).1 alphabetical order, word by word, are then used to Indexing Welsh names determine the sequence of entries when the same English conventions of nomenclature apply today in surname recurs in the index ('first' = 'Christian' = Wales as much as in England, but there are three 'baptismal' = 'given' = 'forename').

Judges 12 – Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon – Radio Show #246 I. In the book of Judges, we have a brief record of the early history (the first centuries) of the history of the land of Israel. We see the leaders God chose, judges, who ruled under Jehovah, the King. Through the lives and work of these judges, we can learn about God’s works and ways. II. Jephthah, after getting the victory over the Ammonites, came home and was met by his daughter. He had vowed to dedicate the first thing out of his house to the LORD OR offer it as a burnt offering. He dedicated his daughter to Jehovah, which in this case meant that she remained unmarried, a perpetual virgin. Now, he returns home only to face the outrages of Ephraim. III. The Outrages of the Tribe of Ephraim. A. Judges 12:1. Ephraim comes north to confront Jephthah at his home. The same tribe that caused Gideon trouble, Judges 8:1. They are even more unreasonable and outrageously violent! They threaten to destroy him and his family with fire. B. Verse 2. He reminds them that he was in a great and manly struggle against the sons of Ammon. He did call for their help, but they did not come to save him. C. Verse 3. When they did not rescue him, he took his soul in his hands and passed over to fight the sons of Ammon. The LORD acted to give them into his power. Why, then, have they come up now to fight him? Thus he gives them a peaceful answer, but this time the outrageously jealous Ephraimites are beyond reason.
