Deutsche Welle: Video-Thema Six Assignments per Grading Cycle

On the Deutsche Welle website, www..de, there is a virtually inexhaustible collection of constantly-updated materials, including daily in written and audio formats, the Jojo sucht das Glück series, and much, much more. Those planning to take the AP would be well-advised to spend time here regularly surfing around to sample various readings, audio files, and videos. However, for this project, we are going to concentrate on one feature of the site, the Video-Thema.

No matter where you are on the DW site, there is always a blue bar across the top with the headings Themen, Media Center, Programm, and Deutsch lernen (assuming, of course, that you have chosen to view the site in German). If you hover over “Deutsch lernen,” a menu with four columns pops up. In the second column, Deutsch XXL, there’s a link a few items down called Video-Thema. Clicking on that link takes you to the “headquarters” of the Video-Thema section. A new video is published here once a week. On the main page, you’ll always find the newest video prominently featured (on side of the screen), and under it, the last three weeks’ videos. On the right, you’ll find an even longer listing of recent videos, and under that, you’ll find a year-by-year archive of all the weekly videos going back to 2008.

They have things arranged and indexed in a number of ways, almost too many, but when you see a title that interests you, the best link to click, if and when you can locate it, is the link next to the word LEKTION. That will take you to a standardized presentation that has the video and underneath it five headings: Übersicht (overview), Übungen (exercises), Manuskript (transcript), Glossar (glossary), and Downloads & Links. For the older videos, you may not find this arrangement, but you should always be able to find the video, the exercises (in interactive and/or PDF format), and the transcript.

For each of the four grading periods this year, you will be responsible for watching six of these videos and completing an accompanying assignment, two before each progress report or report card comes out. You must complete one of each of the six types of assignments outlined on the back of this page, which correspond to the types of tasks on the AP. It doesn’t matter which order you do them in, as long as two get done before each deadline and six get done by the end of the grading period. A Daily Grade Pass may be used to drop two of the six assignments during a given grading period.

When I say “watch the video,” I mean watch it multiple times. Watch it first without captions, then with (if captions are available). Make use of the vocabulary list they give you. Really wrestle with it and try to gain as full an understanding of it as you can.
