Benjamin Franklin was one of the brightest minds of eighteenth century America. He in- vented bifocal glasses (so, if that if what you are wearing to read this, you know whom to thank), the lightning rod, and numerous other things. He was a political campaigner, instru- mental in the emergence of the United States as a nation and the first American ambassa- dor to France. And yet, the way that I see and hear him referred to is in variations on a quotation from a letter he wrote in 1789:“in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” A throw away line, but one that has endured, because of its truth. Death and taxes: nothing else is certain. And some people seem to do pretty well at es- caping taxes (something to remember the next time I order something from Amazon, say). But Death is the inescapable fact with which eventually all of us will have to deal. It has been said of the Victorians (not entirely fairly) that they were obsessed with death and embarrassed by sex, whereas we have reversed that. We find ourselves embarrassed by, afraid of, and hiding from death – perhaps because it is so inescapable. Rather like the black hole that was recently pictured for the first time: it sucks everything in and lets nothing back out. If only there were someone who had come back, and not only escaped from Death, but defeated it, so that was no need to fear it. That was the claim that Jesus first followers, His eyewitnesses, made. They were so convinced of it, that they were willing to die for it. What about you? Tim 3 FROM THE PARISH REGISTERS Funerals: Our deepest sympathy to the families of: John ROGERS, who was buried at St Margaret, Halstead on 3 April 2020 Brenda DICKER, who was buried at St Margaret, Halstead on 7 April 2020 Diane GRAY, whose funeral was at Bluebell Cemetery, Halstead on 16 April 2020 Mabel DESBOROUGH, whose funeral is scheduled for 27 April 2020 at Kemnal Park Crematorium Joseph NOLAN, whose funeral is scheduled for 29 April 2020 at Bluebell Cemetery, Halstead. N.B. Tim is continuing to prepare people (via Zoom) for baptism (for them- selves/their children) and confirmation, and providing marriage prepara- tion sessions. If you would like to discuss a future baptism or marriage, please contact him on [email protected] CHARITABLE GIVING Our Parish Churches, St Margaret’s and St Katharine’s, donate a proportion of their income from church collections and donations to support local, na- tional and international Christian charities. For St Katherine’s, the PCC have selected the charities to benefit. For St Mar- garet’s a Charitable Giving Group have met for the past 18 years to nominate charities they are passionate about and make recommendations to the PCC. Going forward the St Margaret’s Charitable Giving Group will cease. Both churches will continue to make an annual donation to the Church Mission So- ciety to support our mission partners Eric and Rhena Clouston in Bangalore. The collection from certain special services (mainly the fifth Sunday of the month services) will be donated to charities chosen by the Rector and Church PCCs and perhaps these could be combined with a speaker. This already hap- pens with some service, for example, Harvest collection to Poverty & Hope; Christingle to the Children’s Society; Remembrance to the Poppy Appeal. In addition to the monetary giving there are so many ways our churches pro- vide charitable support - Children’s Society collection boxes; Harvest produce to the Manna Society; Toys for the Salvation Army, Donations to Swanley Food Bank. 4 The Reverend Tim Edwards thanks all who have been and continue to be involved in the church charitable giving which continues to help many people in need. Helen Balfour EXERCISE ADVICE Take exercise for even half an hour a day – and lower depression! Here is some good news for us all: if you are feeling low, get moving. A recent study at Harvard has found that even just half an hour of exercise a day can lower the risk of depression by 17 per cent. So – even though we are told to stay home at present, do a work- out in your living room, run around the garden a dozen times, or run up and down your staircase 20 times -anything to get your heart pounding and your body moving! Tim Edwards ST MARGARET’S PARISH ARCHIVE As with many village parishes, St Margaret’s Parish is steeped in history: the current church was built in 1881. However, there are manuscripts mention- ing a church at Haltesteda, in 1115, 905 years ago. A few months ago, I was asked to put together an archive, with the goal of collating different docu- ments, photos, letters, newspaper articles and memoirs to ensure the history of the parish lives on. My family have lived in Halstead for many generations and I myself was born here, and grew up in the village with its wonderful community spirit. I am hopeful that with your help that we can put together a fantastic archive full of content, that will tell the story of the parish for generations to come. Already, there have been some interesting contributions to the archive includ- ing many parish magazines, some newspaper articles and a few photographs. Some examples from the archive so far include: • A copy of the service sheet from 1911 for the “Dedication of the New Organ”. During the service a recital was given by Mr. F.A.W. Docker, fin- ishing with Zadok the Priest – Coronation Anthem by Handel. • A newspaper article covering the re-roofing of St. Margaret’s in 1972, by Victoria and Joseph Taylor, a master builder. They were renowned across 5 Europe for their fine repairs and tiling of church buildings. An interesting fact from the article is that hand-made Sussex tiles were used on the roof of St Margaret’s! • A photograph and booklet from the St. Margaret’s Church Centenary in 1981. The photo shows the congregation gathered outside the Old Rec- tory along with Rev. John Whitehead, the rector at the time. Do you remember this? I’m sure many of you have lots of memoirs, newspaper cuttings, photographs or other pieces relating to your fond memories and events in the parish. If you have anything to contribute to our parish archive, then I would love to hear from you. I was relieved when the Government eventually de- cided to put a stop to all global travel for 30 days just before our travel date of 27th March. Obviously, had we made the decision not to travel due to the risk of not getting back home 11 days on, we would have lost all our money. Thankfully that was not the case and the decision was taken out of our hands. I am pleased to report, at the time of writing, Gambia’s reports of Covid 19 cases are relatively low, with the exception of a few cases which started with a British traveler who became ill several days after arriving there.
