    Waste management in Larissa prefecture, Greece S. Bakopoulou1 & A. Kungolos2 1Department of Management of Rural Environment and Natural Resources, University of Thessaly, Greece 2Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly, Greece Abstract It is the objective of this study to evaluate the management of air waste, wastewater and solid waste in the prefecture of Larissa, Greece. The levels of air pollution in the prefecture are not so high. Nevertheless, examination has showed that the existent atmospheric pollution is mainly attributed to static sources, such as central heating and industry, especially in the city of Larissa. The study of water pollution includes surface and underground water. The surface water pollution is mainly attributed to industrial wastewater. The pollution of Pineios River is characterized by fluctuations. In some areas of the river, especially after the city of Larissa, the levels of pollution are high. Moreover, the waters of Asmaki canal and Karla Lake are so polluted that there is no possibility of finding life in these water bodies. On the other hand, the groundwater pollution is related to the high concentration of nitrates, caused by over-fertilization of farming lands. Sources of soil pollution include domestic solid waste landfills and especially uncontrolled landfills in many areas of the prefecture. The main problem is that some of these landfills are located near rivers or streams, provoking essential pollution. This evidence has showed that one program about the optimal waste management has to be developed in the prefecture in order to protect the renewable natural resources according to the principles of sustainable development.

The present paper focuses on the modern built heritage of the Thessaly Region (Greece), giving special emphasis to the “konakia” monuments built during the late 19th and early 20th century that were once used as residences by the big landowners of the Thessalian agricultural plain (“tsiflikia”). Field research conducted, as well as a survey of secondary data, revealed that only fifteen (15) “konakia” remain in Thessaly, equally dispersed in Larisa, Trikala and Karditsa Prefectures. Given their use, all of the “konakia” are found within—or in the vicinity of—agricultural land and settlements. Most of them present severe signs of abandonment, while only four (4) of them are in use (either as second-homes or as spaces with cultural and administrative use). Deformation maps of high spatial resolution deduced by the Persistent Scattering Interferometry (PSI) technique (using radar scenes from ERS and ENVISAT satellites) for the period 1992-2006 were produced to study the spatial and temporal ground deformation. A developed GIS database (including geological, tectonic, morphological, hydrological, meteorological and water- table variation from wells in the area) offered the possibility of studying in detail the intense subsidence. The PSI based average deformation image clearly shows that subsidence generally takes place inside the Larissa Plain ranging from 5-250 mm. The largest amplitude rates (-25 mm/yr) are observed around the urban area of Larissa City (especially at Gianouli and Nikea villages), while the Larissa City center appears to be relatively stable with a tendency to subside. The rest of the plain regions seem to subside at moderate rates (about 5-10 mm/yr). The surrounding mountainous area is stable, or has slightly been uplifted with respect to the NE located reference point.
