Sn Garamond-Normal, 11, 5 Pt. • Introduction All Available Tennis History
Introduction All available tennis history books tackle tennis history unevenly in two main respects. They usually give very little information on the pre-1919 years and do not give enough weight to professional tennis before 1968. I decided to overcome these limitations in my book by devoting one page for each year starting from 1877. Each page contains a short summary of the major events in that particular year, with scores of classic matches given in detail; and year-end rankings in tabulated form that show the performance of the top players at the major events. As the greatest novelty of this work I have provided year-end rankings for the whole course of tennis history. These include each year the Top 8 players (with their nationality and age indicated) and (separated by a dividing line) additional winners of the listed major events. Although from 1973 and 1975 there are official computer rankings by the ATP and WTA, respectively, their main purpose is to have an order of admittance to tournaments and facilitate seeding. Opinions differ as to the credibility of such computer lists for other purposes. The calculation methods often changed during their history, and they did not take into account important tournaments (like the year-ending championships till 1990) and team competitions (like Davis Cup till 2009). Prior to the use of the computer, rankings were a matter of judgement made by tennis journalists. I feel that even after the introduction of computer lists, the opinion of leading journalists represent a better guide to the future historian of how the players stood in relation to each other.

  • Rolex Returns to Roland-Garros As Premium Partner and Official Timekeeper
Official Timekeeper PRESS RELEASE ROLEX RETURNS TO ROLAND-GARROS AS PREMIUM PARTNER AND OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER Geneva, Switzerland, Friday 28 May 2021 – Over the next two weeks, the best tennis players from across the globe will contest Roland-Garros, the second Grand Slam® tournament of the year. Rolex once again returns as the tournament’s Premium Partner and Official Timekeeper. With origins dating back to 1891, Roland-Garros is one of the sport’s most famous tournaments, renowned for its red clay courts. As the only Grand Slam event played on the surface, Roland-Garros presents a unique challenge to competitors. The slower pace of play and higher bounce demand extreme levels of accuracy and endurance, qualities that resonate with Rolex’s own quest for perpetual excellence – in its watchmaking and all other endeavours. For more than 40 years, Rolex has enjoyed a deep association with tennis, one forged in 1978 when it became the Official Timekeeper of the sport’s oldest and most revered tournament, The Championships, Wimbledon. Since then, the brand has established a strong presence in the game and developed lasting bonds with some of its greatest talents, including Swiss maestro Roger Federer, the 2009 Roland-Garros men’s singles champion, and American Chris Evert, who 35 years ago won the last of her record seven women’s singles titles at the Paris showpiece. Rolex partners all four Grand Slam tournaments and the major organizations that administer the game worldwide. Roland-Garros has been the stage where several Rolex Testimonees have triumphed, including: Swede Björn Borg, the first player to win six titles in the French capital, four of them consecutively (1978–1981); Li Na, who 10 years ago became the first Chinese woman to win a Grand Slam singles crown; and Federer, whose aforementioned 2009 victory completed his career Grand Slam.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)", If it was possible to obtain the missing pagefs) or section, they are spliced into die film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
