Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. Lecythidoideae is limited to the Neotropics and is the only naturally occurring subfamily of Le- cythidaceae in the New World. A subset of genera with zygomorphic flowers—Bertholletia, Corythophora, Eschweilera and Lecythis—comprises a group of about 125 species called the Bertholletia clade. A previous study based on plastid ndhF and trnL-F genes supported the monophyly of Corythophora but suggested that Eschweilera and Lecythis are not mono- phyletic. Using this study as a baseline, we sampled more taxa and sequenced more loci to address the taxonomic problems of the ambiguous genera and to determine relationships within the Bertholletia clade. Our results support the monophyly of the Bertholletia clade as previously circumscribed. In addition, Corythophora is monophyletic, and the two accessions of Bertholletia excelsa come out together on the tree. Results of the simultaneous analysis do not support the monophyly of Lecythis or Eschweilera. -

The New York Botanical Garden is using the Flora Neotropica monograph series as a model for digitization. We describe our efforts at digitizing Flora Neotropica monographs and why digitization of hardcopy descriptions must be a priority for the WFO project. A Population Genetic Survey of the Tropical Tree Cariniana Estrellensis (Lecythidaceae) in a Highly Fragmented Habitat
Heredity (2016) 116, 339–347 & 2016 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0018-067X/16 www.nature.com/hdy ORIGINAL ARTICLE Small but not isolated: a population genetic survey of the tropical tree Cariniana estrellensis (Lecythidaceae) in a highly fragmented habitat MC Guidugli1,2, AG Nazareno3, JM Feres1,2, EPB Contel1,2, MA Mestriner1 and AL Alzate-Marin1,2 Here, we explore the mating pattern and genetic structure of a tropical tree species, Cariniana estrellensis, in a small population in which progeny arrays (n = 399), all adults (n = 28) and all seedlings (n = 39) were genotyped at nine highly informative microsatellite loci. From progeny arrays we were able to identify the source tree for at least 78% of pollination events. The gene immigration rates, mainly attributable to pollen, were high, varying from 23.5 to 53%. Although gene dispersal over long distance was observed, the effective gene dispersal distances within the small population were relatively short, with mean pollination distances varying from 69.9 to 146.9 m, and seed dispersal distances occurring up to a mean of 119.6 m. Mating system analyses showed that C. estrellensis is an allogamous species (tm = 0.999), with both biparental inbreeding (tm − ts = − 0.016) and selfing rates (s = 0.001) that are not significantly different from zero. Even though the population is small, the presence of private alleles in both seedlings and progeny arrays and the elevated rates of gene immigration indicate that the C. estrellensis population is not genetically isolated. However, genetic diversity expressed by allelic richness was significantly lower in postfragmentation life stages. -

Using diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener), plant knowledge is compared among communities (urban- rural population), and between sex (male-female) and age (older or younger than 40 years) categories within each community. Among our informants, we found quantitative differences concerning the knowledge of medicinal plants between sex and age categories. Some individuals play a key role relating to medicinal plant knowledge, and steps should be taken in order to include them in management and conservation plans. PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF A LARGE-SCALE TREE INVENTORY OF UPLAND RAIN FOREST IN THE CENTRAL AMAZON. Judy M. Rankin-de-Mérona (l) Ghillean T. Prance (2) Roger W. Uehling (3) ABSTRACT A large-scale inventory of trees > 10cm DBH was conducted in the upland "terra firme" rain forest of the Distrito Agropecuário da SUFRAMA (Manaus Free Zone Authority Agricul tural District) approximately 65Km north of the city of Manaus (AM), Srasil. The general appearance and structure of the forest is described together with local topography and soil texture. The preliminary results of the Inventory provide a minimum estimate of 698 tree species in 53 families in the 40Km radius sampled, including 17 undescribed species. The most numeri cally abundant families, Lecythidaceae, Leguminosae, 5apotaceae and Burseraceae as also among the most species rich families. One aspect of this diverse assemblage is the proliferation of species within certain genera, Including 26 genera In 17 families with 6 or more species or morphospecies. Most species have very low abundances of less than 1 tree per hectare. While more abundant species do exist at densities ranging up to a mean of 12 trees per ha, many have clumped distributions leading to great variation in local species abundance. The degree of similarity between hectare samples based int the Coefficient of Community similarity Index varies widely over different sample hectares for five ecologically different families. Soil texture apparently plays a significant role In determining species composition in the different one hectare plots examined while results for other variable were less consistent. -
Fruit Flies in Vanuatu
27 ISSN 1017-6276 FRUIT FLIES IN VANUATU Twelve species of fruit flies (Family Tephritidae: Sub-family Dacinae) have been recorded from trapping programmes and fruit surveys, conducted by the Vanuatu Government, Project on Regional Management of Fruit Flies in the Pacific and the ACIAR fruit fly project, since 1994. Despite this number of species, Vanuatu is in a very fortunate position with respect to its fruit fly status. None of the major world species have been recorded and the species that occur in Vanuatu are not as aggressive or damaging as many other species that occur in the Pacific region or elsewhere in the world. Eleven of the species belong to the genus Bactrocera and one to the genus Dacus. Eight of the species are well known to science, while three species are undescribed and are new to science. Bactrocera B. sp. nov. near paraxanthodes NZODA Economically Important Fruit Fly Species The species that infest commercial or edible fruits are Bactrocera trilineola Drew, B. umbrosa (Fabricius) and B. quadrisetosa (Bezzi). Bactrocera trilineola (Figure 1) B. trilineola is restricted to Vanuatu, but is widely distributed there. It occurs on all islands where trapping or fruit surveys have been done and probably occurs on most of Vanuatu’s 80 islands. It has been recorded from 32 hosts, belonging to 18 plant families. Of the 32 recorded hosts, 22 are regarded as commercial or edible fruits. -
