  • Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, South Africa
SABI SABI, SOUTH AFRICA A Hotel Story Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, South Afica Words by HOLLY TUPPEN oe was the man behind our most important mistake,” says Jacques Smit, Sabi “J Sabi’s marketing director, nodding to one of Earth Lodge’s most experienced Shangaan guides. “In the building process some wet concrete fell of a wall and mixed with the gravel and sand on the ground below. Joe picked it up and smoothed it back on. That was that. We’d found the lodge’s key ingredient – the earth itself.” Earth Lodge is the newest of four lodges on the Sabi Sabi private game reserve. The most southerly private reserve within the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, this ecosystem is a vital bufer between Kruger National Park to the east and agricultural lands to the west. Since 1993, when fences between Kruger and the surrounding private reserves came down, Sabi Sabi has been part of South Africa’s largest protected wild area. Committed to returning the land in a better state than they found it, Sabi Sabi’s owners, Hilton and Jacqui Loon, have used tourism to protect their chunk of it for the past 35 years. Each Sabi Sabi lodge is designed for a diferent type of safari-goer. I’m here to experience Earth Lodge, which is meant to reflect the future by carving a way forward, not only in its bold design, but also in its commitment to sustainability. On arrival I follow a winding underground path to the entrance. If not for the lizards and beady-eyed geckos darting out of my way, it might feel a little sombre, and not unlike a supervillain’s secret hideaway.

A ring road has been built around Nelspruit (Mbombela), so that you do not need to drive through the town. When you reach Nelspruit (Mbombela), carry on along the N4, following the signs for Malelane and the Lebombo border post, and bypass the turnoff for the city centre. Once you have passed the bridge, take the slip road for the R40 to White River. Please be careful, as this road is only signposted once. Turn right at the bottom of the offramp. At the turning circle, take the road that is marked White River to your left. Turn left at the second set of traffic lights. This will take you onto the main road heading out of Nelspruit (the R40). Follow the R40 towards White River. As you approach White River, continue straight at the traffic circle and do not turn right. Once you have reached White River, the R40 will become the R538. Continue straight and cross over Danie Joubert Street, then turn left onto the R538 (Theo Kleyhans Street). When you reach the turning circle on the hill near the Casterbridge Centre, you will see that the road is marked Hazyview in both directions. Turn left onto the R40 once again. Continue straight into town and turn left when you reach the T-junction, following the sign towards Hazyview.

Sabi Sand The Threat Communities The Solution If we do not do something to prevent it, Africa’s“ animals, and the places in which they live, will be lost to our world, and her children, forever. Before it is too late, we need your help to lay the foundation that will preserve this precious legacy long after we are gone. Nelson Mandela ” We need YOUR help need We THE SABI SAND GAME RESERVE As a visitor to the Sabi Sand Reserve, you are experiencing first hand one of South Africa’s oldest privately owned conservation areas. This private reserve spans almost 50 000 hectares and is home to a diverse wildlife population, including the Big Five and a number of rare and endangered species. As part of the greater Kruger National Park, animals roam unhindered between the reserves. Your experience of this vast natural preserve is as it has always been. Here man is a passive observer, and we believe that it is our collective duty, as citizens of this planet, to keep it that way. Sabi Sand The Threat Communities The Solution We need YOUR help need We THE VERY REAL THREAT WE FACE South Africa, with the largest population of rhinos in the world, is critically important to their conservation. But the senseless slaughter of these iconic animals has reached a crisis point. If the killing in reserves across the country continues at this rate, in the next few years we could see deaths overtaking births. We could therefore witness the extinction of this species in our lifetime.
