Andbeyond-Tengile-River-Lodge-1 SELF DRIVE DIRECTIONS Tengile River Lodge Reservations: +27 11 809 4300 | Emergency Tel: +27 83 463 8923 | Lodge Tel: + 27 13 591 1772 RECOMMENDED ROUTE TO &BEYOND TENGILE RIVER LODGE FROM JOHANNESBURG TO TENGILE RIVER LODGE Take the N12 (which turns into the N4) from Johannesburg to Nelspruit (Mbombela). A ring road has been built around Nelspruit (Mbombela), so that you do not need to drive through the town. When you reach Nelspruit (Mbombela), carry on along the N4, following the signs for Malelane and the Lebombo border post, and bypass the turnoff for the city centre. Once you have passed the bridge, take the slip road for the R40 to White River. Please be careful, as this road is only signposted once. Turn right at the bottom of the offramp. At the turning circle, take the road that is marked White River to your left. Turn left at the second set of traffic lights. This will take you onto the main road heading out of Nelspruit (the R40). Follow the R40 towards White River. As you approach White River, continue straight at the traffic circle and do not turn right. Once you have reached White River, the R40 will become the R538. Continue straight and cross over Danie Joubert Street, then turn left onto the R538 (Theo Kleyhans Street). When you reach the turning circle on the hill near the Casterbridge Centre, you will see that the road is marked Hazyview in both directions. Turn left onto the R40 once again. Continue straight into town and turn left when you reach the T-junction, following the sign towards Hazyview. Once you have reached the centre of town, turn right onto the R536 towards the Paul Kruger Gate. This intersection is at the second traffic light, just past the walkover bridge and at the Blue Haze Mall. You will see a KFC on the corner on your right. Continue along this road for approximately 37 km and then turn left into a dirt road at the Kirkman’s Kamp sign (a large, wooden sign). Continue on this road until you reach a T- junction, where you will see another sign for Kirkman’s Kamp. Turn right, drive over a cattle grid and continue along the game reserve fence until you reach Shaw’s Gate at the entrance to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Please note that there are no signs for Tengile River Lodge at the gate. You will need to pay an entrance fee at Shaw’s Gate. This fee is calculated per vehicle and per person and is subject to change. The exact fee can be confirmed at the time of reservation. Once inside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, take the road towards Lion Sands. Remain on this road until you have passed Lion Sands, Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge and Selati Lodge. You will cross over a big intersection, where you will see a sign for Tengile River Lodge. After this intersection the road will split. 15/08/2019 | &Beyond trading terms apply Keep right and follow the sign for Tengile River Lodge. Stay on this road you will see a sign for Tengile River Lodge and turn left. Follow this road until the reach the lodge. FROM KRUGER MPUMALANGA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO TENGILE RIVER LODGE Exit the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and turn right on the R538. Continue for 3km and turn left towards the R40 to White River. After 8.6km turn right onto the R40 to White River. As you approach White River, continue straight at the traffic circle and do not turn right. Once you have reached White River, the R40 will become the R538 again. Continue straight and cross over Danie Joubert Street, then turn left onto the R538 (Theo Kleyhans Street). There is no access to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve from inside the Kruger National Park. The GPS co-ordinates for &Beyond Tengile River Lodge are S 24°56’56'', E 31°33’21''. We only recommend the use of a GPS when travelling on South Africa’s main roads. GPS maps do not generally feature most dirt roads and thus we advise that you please take care to follow the travel directions provided at all times during your journey to our lodges. As you approach the lodge, please be aware that you are in a wilderness area where predators and high-profile game roam freely. Do not leave your car for any reason. Please adhere to the speed limits within the reserve at all times. As you will be entering reserves with wild animals, and driving over gravel roads, &Beyond recommends you take appropriate insurance cover and consider excess-waiver cover. INTRODUCTION In the past worthwhile “signature events” brought fame and fortune to countries, provinces and cities all over the world. Modern times with its competition on all fronts and increasing entertainment options make it very difficult to find a place in the sun for any new activity, and it is not easy to create such events without simply copying another event. Our aim was to find an event that would stand out and live up to the challenge of becoming a Signature event for Mpumalanga. This presentation tells you more. 2. A friendly wager amongst the guides as to when this season's first newborn impala would be seen had us all waiting in anticipation to spot a long-legged youngster and call it in over the radio. This year’s winner was Dylan – the lucky date was 4 November 2014. Lambing time has meant that impalas have had more human attention than usual during game drives, with very pregnant impalas moving off on their own and newborn lambs struggling to stand or wobbling on their stilt-like legs. There are lots of "ooohs" and "aaahs" being whispered during the game drives. The softer side of the guides is noticeable as well, as we study the little creatures with our binoculars and announcing we have seen an umbilical cord or reporting that the young are allogrooming (mutual grooming) each other already. As the temperatures have increased we've noticed the larger species like elephant and buffalo spending more time at the waterholes, packing their bodies with mud to avoid flies and to rid themselves of ticks in the process.

    Harry Kirkman Walter Henry (Harry) Kirkman was born in the Steytlerville District of the Eastern Cape on 31 st March 1899. He illegitimately joined up with the armed forces at the age of 15 and served in the East African campaign. After the war he took over the management of the T.C.L. cattle Ranch on the Sabie River (now the Sabi-Sand Game Reserve). He took over duties in 1927 from his friend Bert Tomlinson who left this position to become a Ranger in the Kruger National Park. Many of the duties of this position such as predator control, fire management and anti-poaching, were similar to those of a Ranger and in 1933 he followed his friend Bert Tomlinson into service with National Parks. Initially Col. James Stevenson-Hamilton in a clerical position, which was not much to his liking, employed him but he accepted the job as it gave him a foot in National Parks. In 1935 he was appointed to a Ranger’s position and was given the Sabi Section of the Park. Given his new status, he promptly married Ruby Cass. During this time, Harry followed up on reports of Black Rhino in the Gommondwane area of the KNP and found tracks, but could not get to see this animal. He was thus the last person to record this species in KNP as thereafter Black rhinos were not recorded again as they had become extinct. In 1938 Harry was moved to a new Ranger’s Section. This became known as Shangoni and he was instrumental in its development.
