STRONGMAN HISTORY There is no better way to begin a complete guide to strongman than with the history and origin of the sport itself. On some level strongman has existed as long as man has existed. Humans have always had to lift rocks and logs, or carry loads of wheat or wood on their back etc. Further down the line in history we had to move ships by rowing with oars on a boat, or pull heavy loads with ropes. Human strength in its rawest most functional form has always been important for our survival. Ancient stories of strongman like Samson in the bible and the Greek myth of Hercules has captivated us for centuries. -

Mission The USAWA was formed to continue the long standing tradition of old-time weightlifters like Eugen Sandow, Louis Cyr, Arthur Saxon, Hermann Goerner, Warren Lincoln Travis, and many others. We strive to preserve the history of the original forms of weightlifting, which in the past has been referred to as ―odd lifting‖. Many of the lifts we perform are based on stage acts or challenge lifts of old-time strongmen. History The USAWA was organized in 1987 and was a charter member of the International All-Round Weightlifting Association. The USAWA has over 150 recognized lifts and 8000 plus records, so any strength athlete can find their niche. We have a drug testing program to encourage drug free lifting. Numerous local meets and a National competition are held each year to find true ―all-round‖ weightlifters. Impulse Strength & Fitness White Paper Strength Training with High Frequency Maximise strength, lean muscle mass, and general fitness by challenging the common wisdom in modern strength training by Matthew Perryman, CSCS July 2010 White Paper: Strength Training with High Frequency Impulse Strength & Fitness Abstract In modern strength & conditioning circles, the principles of training stress and recovery are often taken as axiomatic, born out by both academic research and practical experience. That said, we have precious little formal knowledge regarding how to maximize training variables, and limited information on the body's recuperative powers. Most of what we take for granted as fact is extrapolation and speculation. In this white paper I wish to discuss the common assumptions regarding training stress and recovery, explore reasonable criticisms of those assumptions, and to lay out a programming strategy that can take advantage of a modified understanding of these factors. What We (Think We) Know Strength athletes rely on common styles, modes, and methods of training. For these purposes, anyone who relies on weight training to develop strength as a primary goal will be considered a strength athlete. This includes powerlifters, Olympic weightlifters, throwers, shotputters, strongmen, & bodybuilders. Modern strength programs derive from a handful of shared sources, namely a handful of books that detail Soviet-era knowledge and practice; trends in Western strength training that developed in the 20th century; and contemporary re-interpretations that have emerged from the combination of the first two sources. Very little is derived from current sport and exercise science in terms of practical application. Professional organizations issue routinely issue position statements on the subjects of programming and periodization, and while research is ongoing, those stances inevitably default to the three sources listed above. -

The Valley Cassadaga Valley Central School District Newsletter INSIDER Strongman Reinhoudt visits Cassadaga Valley Written by Jordan Patterson Dunkirk Observer, October 31, 2019 SINCLAIRVILLE — Don Reinhoudt, known for moving ridiculously heavy objects, spoke to Cassadaga Valley students in an effort to lift their spirits. And his message was simple: Never give up. “Don’t ever, please, don’t ever sell yourself short,” said Reinhoudt, a former world’s strongest man who competed internationally in strongman competitions. “You can be anything you want in this world. It takes by going to school, listening to your teachers, your moms and dads and by not quitting on yourself. Inside Cassadaga Valley Central School on Wednesday, Reinhoudt told stories to students, who he noted were young enough to be his grandchildren, about how he became the world’s strongest man while competing in the 1970s. A video was also screened that displayed his numerous feats of strength as he competed for the title he is most known for. Reinhoudt, who was born in Brocton, was most recently inducted into the National Strength and Power Hall of Fame in 2018, marking the eighth hall of fame that features his name. In the same year, he was named in the Top 10 All-Time Strongman of the Century by the International Powerlifting Federation. He also served as the director of the Chautauqua County Youth Bureau for a number of years. Even during his time competing, Reinhoudt would provide motivational presentations that used to feature him showing off his strength. A typical show some 15 years ago would consist of him splitting license plates, bending metal pipes and ripping phone books with his bare hands.
