Her visit coincided with the Council's series of open meetings held in this area, designed to gauge response to its pro grams from the art and academic com munities across Canada. Director Andre Michael Spencer of the CFDC and Penni Jaques of the Canada Council at the S.F. U. Forum in Fortier revealed that the Canada Coun British Columbia cil gives away $45 million annually to the arts, humanities and social sciences, 36 per cent of it in Ontario. 21st Century Zombies: New Media, Cinema, and Performance By Joanne Marie Taylor A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Peter Glazer, Chair Professor Brandi Wilkins Catanese Professor Kristen Whissel Fall 2011 21st Century Zombies: New Media, Cinema, and Performance © 2011 by Joanne Marie Taylor Abstract 21st Century Zombies: New Media, Cinema, and Performance by Joanne Marie Taylor Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies and a Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Peter Glazer, Chair This project began with a desire to define and articulate what I have termed cinematic performance, which itself emerged from an examination of how liveness, as a privileged performance studies concept, functions in the 21st century. Given the relative youth of the discipline, performance studies has remained steadfast in delimiting its objects as those that are live—shared air performance—and not bound by textuality; only recently has the discipline considered the mediated, but still solely within the circumscription of shared air performance. The cinema, as cultural object, permeates our lives—it is pervasive and ubiquitous—it sets the bar for quality acting, and shapes our expectations and ideologies. The cinema, and the cinematic text, is a complex performance whose individual components combine to produce a sum greater than the total of its parts. The cinema itself is a performance—not just the acting—participating in a cultural dialogue, continually reshaping and challenging notions of liveness, made more urgent with the ever-increasing use of digital technologies that seem to further segregate what is generally considered real performance from the final, constructed cinematic text.

The FFM 2005 will be in its 29e edition presented this year from August 26 to September 5. On the whole, 2000 films are on the schedule. Serge Losique is a special character and the man of cinema does not hesitate to fight for his ideas. His Film Festival underwent the criticism of certain professionals of the industry and the debate even caused the creation of a second festival of film in Montreal. The question that the experts are asking is to know if there is place for two events of scale in a market already saturated with festivals. According to Losique: " The World Film Festival of Montreal aims to make known the cinema to the fans and the frequentation of the public is the only element determining of the success of the event!" www.ffm-montreal.org ____________________________________________________________ Helping the homeless people Gilbert Rozon The sociologists agree that any human being which is recognized as a success could also become a failure after two or three bad events in his life. The homeless people are often high level professionals who sank in the itinerance after the loss of an employment, a divorce, a death, a disease or problems of dependence (gaming, alcohol or drug).

Takeda, K. (2014). The interpreter as traitor: Multilingualism in Guizi lai le (Devils on the Doorstep ). Linguistica Antverpiensia, New Series. Themes in Translation Studies, 13 , 93–111. The interpreter as traitor: Multilingualism in Guizi lai le (Devils on the Doorstep )1 Kayoko Takeda Rikkyo University [email protected] This paper discusses ways in which multilingualism is represented in an award-winning Chinese film, Guizi lai le , and its subtitling. Known as Devils on the Doorstep in English, the movie approaches its multilingual setting realistically: Chinese villagers speak in Chinese, Japanese soldiers in Japanese, and interpreters mediate their communication. In examining the Chinese, Japanese and English subtitles of the film, the study focuses on the different strategies used by the translators to represent multilingualism and to subtitle offensive language. The behavior and fate of the Chinese interpreter in the film is also explored, with special attention to the power interpreters possess for controlling and manipulating information and the notion of the interpreter as traitor and war criminal in the context of conflict. Findings of this research invite further investigation into how the audience views multilingualism in cinema and how the identity and loyalty of interpreters is depicted in war-themed movies. Collaborative work by researchers from different language and cultural backgrounds should also be encouraged. 1. Introduction Multilingualism in movies is not a new phenomenon, as Gambier (2012, p. 46) and
