Political Parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly – The Ulster Unionist Party KEY: SO: Sandra Overend SO: I'm Sandra Overend, I am a member of the Ulster Unionist Party, and I represent the constituency of Mid Ulster. What does your Party stand for? Well, the Ulster Unionist Party is a Party of the Union. We believe in… that Northern Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom. We're a Party of law and order. And we're very proud of the history of the Ulster Unionist Party and the integral part that, the leading role, that it played in bringing forward the Peace Process back in 1998. How has your Party changed in the last 20 years? Well, Northern Ireland has changed a lot over the past 20 years. And the Party internally has changed a lot. And we have a new generation of elected representatives now. But our principles remain the same, and that Northern Ireland remains a part of the United Kingdom. We want Northern Ireland to flourish. Do you think the Assembly and Executive are effective? The current Assembly and Executive is really very dysfunctional. Back in ‘98, whenever we … we've helped to bring forward the Belfast Agreement..it was built in a certain way to build trust. And, unfortunately, I don't think that trust has been built. And the current dysfunctionality of the Assembly and how Welfare Reform threatens the future of this place, it really isn't where we wanted to see the Assembly to go. What challenges face your Party moving forward? We're moving forward, but we also face the challenges of increasing female representation and getting young people involved in politics. -

The Archaeology, Architecture and Cultural Heritage chapter relates to the proposed N14/N15 to A5 Link Scheme which involves the design of a road linking the A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) in Tyrone to the existing N15 at Lifford in County Donegal (refer Figure 3.1, Volume 2). 10.2 Methodology 10.2.1 Guidelines and Policy This Chapter is compiled so as to be compliant with the guidelines set out in legislation in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland The relevant legislation in Northern Ireland which protects and recognizes the archaeological heritage is The Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (Northern Ireland) Order 1995. The Planning Service has produced a series of Planning Policy Statements which set out the policies of the Department of the Environment on particular aspects of land- use planning. Each Planning Policy Statement applies to the whole of Northern Ireland and their contents are taken into account when development plans are being prepared. The contents are also material in the case of decisions on individual planning applications and appeals. Planning Policy Statement 6: Planning, Archaeology and The Built Heritage (PPS 6) specifically sets out the planning policies of the Department of the Environment in relation to the protection and conservation of archaeological remains and other features of the built heritage and advises on the treatment of these issues in development plans. -

THE WAY Lt IS Ulster Faces a Crisis Never Before Encountered in Her History
THE WAY lT IS Ulster faces a crisis never before encountered in her history. The British and Dublin Governments have agreed a joint plan to force a united Ireland upon the unionists of Ulster. Their strategy is set out in their joint position paper known as the Framework Document. In its Manifesto “New Labour” have endorsed this betrayal paper. That Document has only one end - the annexation of Northern Ireland by Dublin. HMG and the Dublin Government have made it clear at the Talks that they will not depart from their agreed programme. This Agenda is developed from the Anglo-Irish Agreement, and in particular, the Downing Street Declaration. That Declaration, altered the basis of the principle of consent on the future of Ulster. Before the Joint Declaration Ulster’s future depended on the consent of the people of Northern Ireland alone but the Declaration sets out a new basis for effecting constitutional change in Northern Ireland - the consent of all the people of Ireland. David Trimble, who approves of the Declaration, claimed that - The Orange was safe beneath the Green, while Ken Maginnis affirmed:- Unionists would accept a settlement based on the Downing Street Declaration. At the Talks the Official Unionists have helped to forward the joint agenda of the two Governments - (1) by supporting the forcing of Clinton’s peace envoy, Senator Mitchell, into the Chair. Unbelievably this cave-in came after the Official Unionist Deputy Leader announced that having Senator Mitchell chair the Stormont Talks would be - like having an American Serb chair talks on Bosnia. He could not be considered impartial. -
