Personal statement He Hawai'i Au, I am proud to be Hawaiian…please vote for Keoni Kealoha Agard as your delegate for the 2016 Constitutional Convention to restore our Hawaiian nation and its government. Restoration means management and control over our own land and assets, and the power to build a nation that reflects our own priorities and Hawaiian values but more importantly being in charge of our own destiny.

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 6 o f 2 0 2

As Vice Chairman of the 1999-2000 Native Hawaiian Constitutional Convention, “Aha Hawai'i O'iwi”, I have experience working with 77 duly elected delegates , who debated every word and every sentence of the two constitutions that were never presented for ratification to the Hawaiian community due to termination of funding.

Our generation must create the VISION for the Nation of Hawaii and future generations. The Nation of Hawaii can collect billions of dollars of shipping tariffs, rental income for our military bases; foreign aid from the U.S. , and reparations for the illegal actions perpetrated on our Queen and people...None of these monies can be received by the State. But working in tandem with the State, we can share our resources to stablize the economy for all of us. Imua!

Personal statement I am seeking election as a delegate to the 'aha to represent the voice of reasserting Hawaiʻi's status as and independent state. Working for over 40 years on educating kanaka maoli on the history of our proud nation, I hope to bring to light the wrongs done to our Aliʻi, our kānaka, this ʻāina and to focus our efforts as a lāhui on reclaiming that which that had never been extinguished, our Hawaiʻi. The time for our people to act is now, for the

Personal statement We have two pressing issues.First is the passage a formal document from Congress that assures Hawaiians of self-determination and the right to negotiate for reparations.Second, determining the process to be used to define and identify Hawaiians who will be eligible to participate in the self-governance process.I believe that a comprehensive education campaign on this process is crucial. Unless Hawaiians can clearly understand what is being done on their behalf they will not support it. BRINGING HAWAIIANS TOGETHER TO DISCUSS ISSUES THAT ARE CLOSE TO THEIR HEART IS A START IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Personal statement Aloha mai kākou.

My name is Zuri "Z" 'Aki and the 'āina for whom I belong is Waipi'o, O'ahu. I am a Hawaiian Studies graduate from the University of Hawai'i and a J.D. candidate at William S. Richardson School of Law.

This process is about you and your 'ohana. It is also about us, the nation, the Lāhui Hawai'i - those who came before, all those here now, and all those who have yet to be born. This process has everything to do with our best interest and our continued existence as a people in perpetuity. This is our moment in time to better our condition and advance ourselves. Let us do that together.

As a law scholar, my area of focus has been in constitutional law, international law, environmental law, federal Indian law, Hawaiian law, and the legal status of the Hawaiian State - disciplines necessary for the level of expertise needed at this up-coming convention. As a traditional cultural practitioner, I can better serve our progressive movement though the guiding principles in our cultural values - so that our foundation is firmly rooted no matter how great we grow.

This is our time. Ua mau ke ea o ka 'āina i ka pono. Mahalo nui loa.

Personal statement Nāʻālehu has been immersed in the Hawaiian community throughout his life.

He writes from Hōkūleʻa: “We often use the canoe metaphor and that idea of seeking a destination on a distant horizon to illustrate the process that will carry on through a constitutional convention. My grandmother passionately reminded us what it was like to live in the shadow of the overthrow, to bear witness to that inequality in her own 'āina hānau.

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 24 o f 202

Now I find myself writing from the deck of an actual canoe having sailed far from that memory of hurt and anguish that she kept close into one of strength and conviction. The metaphor of journey is no longer rooted in myth, rather, this vessel and this process will bring us to the actual 'āina of our kuleana.

It took us more than a century to get to this place. We must now make critical choices to set the direction for our people, and come together to finish work that was started so many years ago. We must not fear to do our best, for though the wisdom of our ancestors guide us, it is ours alone to protect and further our rights, our beloved institutions, our 'āina, our dignity, and a way forward to rule and live side by side in Hawai'i Nei."

Personal statement How do we rebuild a nation for ourselves in a world and homeland so vastly changed from when we were sovereign? What should that nation look like, feel like, and how should it act? And, of deep importance to me, how does that nation exist along with the other million-odd citizens of Hawaiʻi that call these islands home? The entire world is aching for different models of leadership. Unfettered capitalism and our own short-sightedness have brough us to a critical point: with the effects of global warming we are at the brink of so radically changing our environment that humans—and many other lifeforms—will be challenged to survive. Should we consider the worldʻs problems as we debate our own future? I believe that we must consider the present world reality for two basic reasons: as islanders, we are already feeling the impacts of climate change and they are fundamentally changing our climate and physical reality. And, secondly, I believe that the fundamental tenets of our O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 26 o f 202

kūpuna, which helped us survive and thrive for over a thousand years, can form the basis for a new, healthy, holistic society that can serve as a model for how humanity can live in harmony with the earth once again.

Personal statement I met Queen Liliuokalani's cousin on the Big Island of Hawaii in the late 90's, and she said the Lord God would except me in becoming someone in the Hawaiian Government. He wants us to honour him but the United States does not realize this. After all he paid for our sins on the cross. I just want to preserve our future which I believe the United States and their State for Hawaii has no right to control. The Lord God would give us the right to rule here not them that ripped our ancestors off. Sincerely Mark Castro

The whole essence of being a delegate is to provide freedoms to our people that exist spiritually, culturally, traditionally whether domestic and international with constitutions that protect a wide range of Hawaii's uniqueness. The Government needs to protect it's people by upholding the Supreme laws of the land, not by violating the these same laws with the expectation of the people remaining compliant. Personal statement For most of my life, I have worked hard to support my family and serve my community. My kupuna, Elizabeth and George Cypher, taught me the values of respect for others and aloha for our islands. During my work with Sun Press community newspapers some years ago, I advocated for wise planning for the future of our island, and dedicated many years to supporting balanced growth for O`ahu - in particular, for Windward O`ahu. Over the years, I learned that advocacy - supporting what is pono - is much more effective in moving things forward than having a negative voice. I seek to lift up all Hawaiians to a better life, to work toward better management of our cultural and natural resources, and to leave a better legacy for generations to come. If elected, I will encourage mutual respect and dialogue, aloha for all points of view, and a direction that benefits the Hawaiian people and Hawai`i.

Personal statement We must look back to our ali'i, to their leadership and sense of kuleana to find the path forward for our people. Hawai'i needs Hawaiian leaders. Hawai'i needs Hawaiian voices to be heard. The time has come to unify, in harmony the collective chorus of the descendants of way finders and warriors. We must stand resolute, shoulder to shoulder, armed with the ancestral wisdom and knowledge of our kūpuna.

Our homeland has changed. With each new high rise and road expansion, the land that we hold sacred becomes less and less familiar. However, we are the keepers of the stories of these places. Without these stories, the epic battles, star-crossed romances and tales of creation this place is nothing more than a beautiful chain of volcanic islands. These stories are told with our voices, Hawaiian voices. Our voices are needed, collectively and harmoniously. Even though the land has changed, we have not.

With a background and passion for hospitality, I welcome the opportunity to aid and assist in the process of bringing our people together for a common goal of unification. Unified in a course, though potentially rough, will be one that elevates our quality of life and standard of living.

Personal statement Our lahui shares a kuleana to care for our past, future and homeland. Increasingly, it has become a difficult kuleana to fulfill. Too many families struggle to make ends meet and keep a roof overhead. There are still too many places we feel unwelcomed. Often, we survive on our aloha and hope for better.

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 57 o f 202

For years, our community has debated how to organize a government, and I have participated in many of these efforts. Early in my career, I saw the true power a Native government has to improve lives, empower communities, and enforce cultural law. I spent the next 16 years sharing with community about constitutions, self-governance and our collective rights. As Chairman Akaka’s Policy Director on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, I worked to advance his vision of reconciliation and recognition of our right to self- governance.

I am a direct and honest communicator focused on strategically achieving our shared goals. I have a demonstrated ability to facilitate consensus in difficult discussions. I ask for your vote because I am committed to a better future for our children, and have the experience, expertise and skills to help draft a constitution that works for our lahui.

Personal statement Native Hawaiians continue to need strong, educated, passionate, open-minded leaders that can work together to address existing and future challenges and opportunities. Fortunately my generation learned from fearless leaders that came before. I think the upcoming ‘aha is a turning point for our people.

As a result of a strong sense of kuleana I feel to my ‘ohana and my people, I have dedicated my education, career, and personal time to serving Native Hawaiians. In these capacities I

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 59 o f 202

have actively advocated for Native Hawaiians at the state and county levels of government to ensure that our interests are advanced and rights are protected. I have also collaborated with strategic partners and allies and have extensive community experience.

I believe our socio-economic conditions, health, education, housing, culture and ‘aina are at stake. I want to be delegate because I know what could happen if we don’t rebuild a Native Hawaiian government and what the potential is if we have a government fighting for our interests and well being.

I hope I’ll have the opportunity to use my education, work experience, and passion for a better future for Hawaiians, to help move our lahui forward.

Personal statement This is history. We now begin the steps towards reorganizing a Native Hawaiian Governing Entity. I am a proud member of the Senate and Hawaii Legislature that passed legislation for the State of Hawaii to formally recognize a governance model that this AHA will create and, with ratification, advance as the modern day Lahui. We will never forget our tragic overthrow. To that fact, let us also acknowledge that historically, for whatever reason, governments come and go, but...nations remain. Whether a Monarchy, Democracy, Aristocracy, Theocracy or whatever the archetype advanced, our Hawaiian nation will once again find it's political voice. Let us all stand and be recognized. As a brilliant young woman once said, "Either we're at the table, or we're on the menu." I choose to be at the table. Malama for now.

Personal statement As a Kanaka Maoli whose ancestors have lived and exercised sovereignty in the Hawaiian islands since time immemorial, I am committed and dedicated to the right of self- determination, the right of Native Hawaiians to determine our political status and to freely pursue our social, economic and cultural development. The time for action is now for Kanaka Maoli to form a Native Hawaiian government of our choosing that promotes and ensures that our Hawaiian language, culture, values, economic base, lands and natural resources, and education is respected, honored, maintained, implemented, and perpetuated. This will ensure that our people will truly have a place to call home with land and housing, rather than having to move to the US continent. In addition, the government-

Personal statement Aloha, my name is Matthew Kaʻaihue but my friends call me “Kona” because I was raised in Kalaoa in the Kona moku of Hawaiʻi Island. In a perfect world, I imagine myself as a complete embodiment of my Hawaiian heritage, my passion, perpetuating cultural values and traditional practices on a daily basis. I see myself working hard, tending to the land in the early hours of morning, speaking ʻŌlelo to my keiki and dancing hula in the early evenings. I envision myself as a leader, a voice for the people, and a humble servant of our Hawaiian community, striving to find a balance where the values of ʻIke Hawaiʻi can peacefully coexist with conflicting ideologies of society today. To realize this dream, I tell my friends, “You all go and be the best at whatever you do, get to the top of wherever you’re at, and I’ll do the same. And when the time is right, letʻs hui pū, kūkākūkā, and make some positive change.” O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 81 o f 202

Every voice is important and differing perspectives shape a broader understanding. With our collective ʻike, our people are unstoppable. And with aloha for each other, I believe that as a community, we can work together and holomua to create a better Hawaiʻi.

Personal statement I am very upfront and forward, so before I get bashed I’ll say it first. I’m unemployed and have been off/on throughout the years, been on government assistance a long time ago, I’ve gone to college, but will finish if the chance arises, I’ve volunteered, been volun-told, and done side jobs to make extra income. With that said, don’t get it twisted, I’m neither ignorant, stupid, or lazy. I look at my situation like many others, trying to survive, however we can.

My mission as a delegate is to uncover many more truths about Hawaii's past/present and recover a lot of what we lost, mostly our lands. While I may not have a recognizable face/name, I'm strong willed, capable, and won't wrong our people. I believe we can maintain and grow our relationships with the communities of the world while reclaiming our lands and culture using what has carried on throughout time and all hardship, Aloha. Personal statement I am passionate about our people, culture, history and our La'hui. I believe that our Aina and our keiki's future must be fiercely protected and defended against those who wish take those very things away. I believe that corruption and greed have poisoned every aspect of politics in Hawaii and I vow to defend our Lahui and our people from the seemingly unending attacks. I believe that we are who we were, that our kupuna left us a blueprint to follow, and that we are truly the people of Aloha. I believe in the words of my Queen, "I owed no allegiance to the Provisional Government so established, nor to any power or to any one save the will of my people and the welfare of my country", this is where my allegiance lies. She also said "I could not turn back the time for political change, but there is still time to save our heritage. Personal statement From a very young age, it was evident Native Hawaiian issues would be a lifelong dedication starting with a decision to have children whose blood quantum was vital to the perpetuation of our Lähui.

With my experience as an ‘Aha Hawai‘i ‘Öiwi delegate we were immersed in literature, discussions, debates, and decisions to further nationhood. I will bring this knowledge, hopefully, to complete the efforts to rebuild our governing structure.

With my years of experience in the community as a whole, I have been an advocate for the downtrodden and uncounted. Governance reigns superior when the people needs are paramount, as opposed to those who have and want more. Today’s future is based on a visionary perspective of the past, present, and future in a global economy that systematically enforces itself amongst all. These concepts must be taken into consideration for our Lähui.

I envision a fair and just deliberation favoring the best diplomacy I can bring to the process. I am noted for my “hard” questions that often leave people in the hot seat of truth. Therefore, I am accountable.

To my people, the Apology Bill 22 years later….justice and self-determination is overdue. IMUA!

My duty was to enroll the Hawaiians to show the U.S. government that this was how many Hawaiians we had living here. I had to go into all the back roads in the country, up and down Ko`olauloa and Ko`olaupoko. At the time, we learned that the most Hawaiians living outside of homestead areas was in Hauula. Living in He`eia all my life and watching the changes and the evictions of whole communities really made me want to fight for the rights of our people. I knew then it was not right, and we had to fight for our rights. This `Aha will give me an opportunity to continue to really try and right the wrongs that were done to our people.

Personal statement For more than 30 years, I have advocated for the betterment of the conditions brought on by the socio-economic, historical, cultural, and political oppression of the Kanaka Maoli. As a mother of eight with nine grandchildren, I have a deep concern for the future of our people. I believe that we have the opportunity to engage in the establishment and development of increasing our capacity to self-rule and right to self-determination of a sovereign government.

I recognize that the Kanaka Maoli is grossly over-represented in categories of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment. I have dedicated my life to improving the overall well- being of marginalized indigenous populations.

As a delegate, I will contribute my experience, knowledge, and understanding of the benefits of self-determination. My vision is to support and ensure that the essential elements of our self-determination continue to exist while we build our nation by protecting our natural resources, rightfully claiming our ancestral lands, sustaining our traditional practices, economically diversifying, and developing offices to further these interests.

The Na‘i Aupuni process is currently one of many methods to address current issues in the native Hawaiian community, primarily the issue of governance. Native Hawaiians’ perspective in land management, governance, education and every other facet of life is either ignored or challenged. I strong believe this process will bring voices together, to find a method to garner our larger interests and address issues that happen in Hawai‘i. I do not believe this process hinders other movements in our community to address past wrongs or governance options.

Na mākou ke kuleana - the responsibility is ours. I do not believe we must agree, but I do believe we owe ourselves the ability to have serious discussions – this process will bring together representatives from across the aupuni.

Last, I plan to advocate for the jurisdiction of all Crown and Government lands, never ceded, be returned to the Hawaii National Body. I am experienced in both law and policy issues as relates to the indigenous people domiciled within the confines of the United States having worked as a trial and appellate judge for sovereign Indian tribes in Washington State and Oregon, as the former chair of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Commission, as Senior Counsel to the US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, as the director of Hawaiian Rights at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, as the executive director of the Native Hawaiian Education Council, as the executive director of the National Indian Education Association, as a national expert on the impact of

Personal statement Self-determination is a fundamental human expression that can only exist where it is cultivated in the hearts, minds, and relationships of people. For it to thrive, we must continually seek to expand the ways in which our actions and shared culture embody self- determination as both reality and aspiration. Therefore, I seek your vote to participate as a delegate in order to help elevate the outcomes of this ʻAha to reflect the greatest expression of self-determination the delegates and the Hawaiian people can collectively imagine.

Personal statement I am a Hawaiian Nationalist. I challenged U.S. jurisdiction in and over Hawaii since 1970, on my own and on behalf of numerous others, in and out of the judicial and political systems. I have brought my position in the courts, as OHA trustee, and at the UN.

I believe those who agree and those who disagree with my positions are all people of good faith. The task before us is not to win arguments, but to unite ourselves into a unified voice, treasuring our different views, but moving forward with Aloha. In this way, with an

open mind and a welcoming attitude, we make space for all of us, with all our opinions. We have too long been divided between Independence from or Integration within the U.S.A. We have used “or” when we should be using “and”. Let’s preserve the advantages of native Hawaiian programs within the U.S. and maintain our right as a people, entitled to liberation from the U.S. Time and opportunities are moderators between those two positions. In this way, we unite our people and all our diversities, moving forward bringing all of our talents to meet the challenges.

The quest is not to walk the straight path, but to learn to walk the crooked path straight. Imua

Personal statement As a delegate, my primary goal will be to help build a fair and equitable government. We have a lot of politics ahead of us, but I believe step one is ensuring that we get our government “right” so that we can empower our people to work together and make good decisions.

I come from generations of Hawaiians who have humbly devoted themselves to the Hawaiian community, especially helping those in need, maintaining our connection to one another through civic work, and perpetuating our cultural traditions. I have an undying love and sense of loyalty for our people. As a delegate I will be uncompromising in pushing for a government that will maximize our wellbeing.

I have spent most of my life cultivating a diverse and practical set of knowledge and skills that I know will lend to the success of our delegate community in building a good government. My formal education is in development with a focus in economics. I have an in- depth knowledge of real world historical processes involved in pursuing self-determination. As a professional and volunteer, I work with the Hawaiian community almost every day. If elected, I will be a strong contributor who knows how to get things done.

Personal statement I want everyday-Native Hawaiians to be represented at the 'aha. The decisions made there will shape the foundation for a Native Hawaiian government that must improve the lives of Native Hawaiians. This nation-building process is an opportunity for all Native Hawaiians to come together – elect representatives and decide on a plan for a better future.

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 134 o f 202

My life and work experiences allow me to represent a broad cross-section of Native Hawaiians. I'm a single father and active homesteader working 50-60 hours a week. I am blessed to care for my tutu who once cared for me. I know how hard getting to college is - as well as the opportunities it provides - because I'm the first college graduate in my ʻohana.

This ʻaha must set a strong framework for how our government will work. We must build on the work of our kupuna and press forward for our children. I envision a Native Hawaiian government that makes living in our ancestral homeland easier for Native Hawaiians. We have the right to solve our own concerns and manage our resources towards achieving our own community’s goals. This government must clear roadblocks that prevent Hawaiians from achieving success. I humbly as for your vote.

Personal statement Aloha mai kakou, I humbly come forward at a time of kinaole when we need to raise up as a people to move into a promising future. I ask for the honor of serving all of our Hawaiian people as a delegate in the Native Hawaiian ‘Aha.

fractured and see more generations lose opportunity and identity. While hostility is understandable, it’s not Kapu Aloha. Shutting down voices of those we do not agree with is not how we will reach a meaningful outcome for our keiki and mo‘opuna.

Over the decades, many in our families struggled with generational poverty, domestic violence, incarceration and more. Many more of our people are hard working productive contributing members who want to help improve life for our people. I believe my ability to be open minded, constructive; my willingness to put in the hours of hard work; participate in discussion, research and hear people, will serve our community well by acting upon the best opportunity we’ve had in over a century to make real progress for our Lahui. Personal statement Aloha all!

This convention will bring together people from various backgrounds representing communities, cultures, and industries. As an advocate for a smart governing structure, I ask for your support in my candidacy for delegate because I bring a deep understanding of how governments around the world are structured and how implementing a solid economic plan will lead to economic self-sufficiency for our people. We now have the opportunity to create a lasting plan for how our people will grow as a society and how we can become prosperous, and therefore we need the right blend of backgrounds in the delegation. Educational background I graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy in 1968. I have a B.A. in History; BEd in Secondary Education; M.A. in Pacific Islands Studies; PhD in Hawaiian History from the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa.

Employment history I am a professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa where I have taught for 40 years.

Criminal record The Wao Kele o Puna volcano rainforest was targeted for geothermal development. While taking part in a religious ceremony to protect Pele from desecration, I was arrested for trespass, misdemeanor.

Personal statement My generation stopped the bombing of Kahoʻolawe; reconnected with our akua; & gained constitutional protection for our language, access rights, & claim to our national lands (ceded public lands trust). We opened channels of federal support for education, elder care, housing & jobs. This Aha-Convention is the last push for us, to finish what our generation started when we put out the call for Aloha ʻĀina. Now is the time to re-build a government of, by and for Kanaka ʻŌiwi. For over 17 centuries prior to European contact, Kanaka ʻŌiwi exercised sovereignty through district chiefs who were part of Aha Aliʻi or Councils of Chiefs with Aliʻi Nui or High Chiefs for our island chiefdoms. Our Aha-Convention needs to build upon this foundation established by our ancestral aliʻi, konohiki, & makaʻainana. Our governance needs to be rooted in the philosophy of Aloha ʻĀina - stewardship of our natural and cultural resources for the well-being of our people & perpetuation of our culture and language. The Aha needs to seek the counsel of our ʻŌiwi loea - master educators; physicians; health professionals; fishers, farmers, scientists, lawyers and businesses. We need to re-build together. Aloha

Personal statement American- capitalism has failed our islands in the only measure that ultimately matters; the sustainability of our islands’ finite and fragile natural resources. Because our natural resources exist in interdependent ecosystems, only system-wide control, through full independence, will provide the protections necessary to ensure they will be here for future generations to thrive in these islands. Half-measures, such as the proposed nation-within-a- nation, would at best provide a limited land base that would remain vulnerable to irreparable damage caused by decisions made by the State of Hawaiʻi and U.S. government. As a lifelong environmentalist, journalist and Independence activist, I’m committed to restoring Independent Hawaiian government, based on Kanaka Maoli values of mālama ʻāina and aloha, with citizenship for all descendants of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects regardless of race. A panel of international law scholars, at the OHA-sponsored Kāmau a Ea V meeting O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 144 o f 202

For the last decade, as a Policy Advisor for Akaka & the Department of the Interior, I’ve worked extensively with native governments in the Pacific & U.S. My understanding of how the structure & power of their governments achieve or limit successful outcomes is useful context as we govern our own affairs. contribute my lessons learned in advancing federal recognition & derived from discussions with policy & legal experts.

I am dedicated to forming a government that will better manage our resources & develop culturally relevant, effective solutions. Our government needs to uphold our values, responding to present problems & emergent issues. Government powers need to be distributed to ensure transparency & accountability. The government should be sized to function with precision & robust participation. With humility & respect, I'd serve as an Oahu delegate.

Personal statement Mahalo ke Akua, mahalo nā Kūpuna, mahalo nā ʻaumākua. My name is Anthony Melvin Makana Paris and I was raised in Nānākuli, Oʻahu, and live in Papakōlea. The previous generations sacrificed, battled, and survived so that all of us could arrive at this moment in our history. I believe the ʻaha is an opportunity to gather expert knowledge, lived experience, and wisdom of our communities to chart next steps for our collective future. We come from a proud line of people who choose to navigate their way in the world through engaging with each other in aloha. At the ‘aha, we are free to mahalo the local communities for journeying with us on our path to self-determination for the betterment of all Hawaiʻi; we might consider inviting the local, American, and international communities to pule for and with us and learn about the history of wrongs in which we are all affected by today; and we ought to work towards a common understanding of the “Hawaiian Situation.” O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 159 o f 202

Personal statement My parents’ stories of their childhood and their background instilled in me, their beliefs, passions, principles and integrity and to always try and “do the right thing.” My father lived during the plantation era, and reminisced of those years during election time in Lahaina, when his mother would tell him to go under the house to get the kerosene lanterns, because if you voted Democrat, the plantation owners would turn-off their electricity.

My grandparents were staunch believers in the rights of the less fortunate. Every election year, my grandmother would dress in her finest black holoku, black papale and elbow- length black gloves, and wore a banner across her chest that read DEMOCRAT; she would stroll down Lahaina town to the election polls, with her siblings in tow, wearing starched white clothing. 'Ano 'ai ke aloha, I am running as delegate in this process because I feel it is an opportunity for our community to assert political agency in a way that could make significant impacts on the Native Hawaiian community and management of Hawai'i's most precious resources. 'aha can lead to major changes that will have positive impacts on our people on an everyday basis. Increasing opportunities for housing, education, and food security are the issueS most important for me heading into this process. i believe we can fight for all of those things and find success as a lāhui. However, I do feel that this process of nation- building has been flawed and has suffered as a result of poor leadership. That said, I feel it is up to a new generation of leaders to be a part of this process. For it is the next generations that will deal with the outcomes in the years to come. I want to be one of the voices representing the next generations. I will also work to ensure that any citizenry and voting rights are inclusive and that EVERY Hawaiian, no matter blood quantum or their geographic location will be given opportunity to participate in our lāhui.

Personal statement Aloha mai kakou. My name is Keani. I was born and raised on Moloka‘i and currently live on O‘ahu, where my husband and I raise our two keiki.

When I consider participating in this monumental opportunity before our Lāhui, I think about my kuleana to my keiki.

I think about what I want them to learn, the kind of kanaka I hope they will become.

I think about what my actions teach them, the image they will have of their mother, and thereby, of themselves.

I think about the world I want them to grow up in and how important it is that I take an active role in shaping it.

I want them to have faith in the power of our Lāhui, that together, we will see the future we all dream of come to fruition.

I want them to recognize the value in each person, those who have passed, those standing before us, and those soon to come.

This, then, makes me think of my kupuna. What their hopes were for me. What they expected of me. What they taught me, directly and indirectly.

On Sept. 30. 1993, I represented the SCHHA by presenting a speech to the Mayor and City Council on lowering the land tax rate on Homestead lands. I was also a member of the Nuuanu neighbor hood board for a period of 2 years, providing information between the Kewalo and Papakolea communities on what is happening in the broader Ahapuaa. I have spoken to many younger people and am dissapointed to note that many are too busy raising their families or trying to make ends meet. I therefore will do my best if I am selected, to try to interest the younger generation to carry on. My son who is the recent head of the education branch of Kamehameha Schools is interested, but needs to concentrate on the Schools first. This is the future Dream I have for the Hawaiian people.

Personal statement We Kanaka Maoli are from the moana (ocean) and mau mokupuni (islands) - we are the ocean and the islands, Ka wai a Kane we cherish, we are one people, on one waʻa on our continuous journey together as one ʻohana, choice is ours - to stand as one body, the winds blow from many directions but there is only one favorable wind to fill our sails that moves us all forward. We need to make the right choices that determine the political outcome and I know where I stand, we must regain our Lāhui again and our right to self-determination.

Personal statement Aloha Mai Kakou,

O a h u - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 189 o f 202

My kuleana is to participate and contribute to the nation building process of the Kanaka Maoili and the restoration of the sovereign nation of Hawai'i. In the spirit of Onipa'a and in acknowledgement of our unlawfully deposed queen and sovereign, Lili'uokalani, I pledge my mind, body, and spirit to the restoration of the Hawaiian Nation as a pono nation among nations and a guiding light in sustainability and respect for our precious 'Aina.

My Kupuna signed the Kue petition, voted against Statehood, and have emphatically supported the restoration of Hawaiian Sovereignty since 1893. I wish to continue in that determination with the support of my fellow Kanaka. It is with great pride and excitement, that I might be a representative delegate and participant in our upcoming 'Aha and help create a positive and respectful environment in which to build consensus and move our nation forward.

I believe my experience, historical perspective, and aloha for our people and ‘aina will contribute to the thoughtful deliberations required to succeed at this monumental task that lies before us. I humbly ask for your vote.

He mea pau 'ole ke aloha,

James Kimo Stowell

Personal statement Aloha olelo! Perpetuate our language. My life’s work is inspired by my grandparents who spoke Hawaiian as their first language, then entered the public school system in 1906 to be tortured to stop speaking Hawaiian language. Our Hawaiian identity has been erased to the point of near extinction. Before we choose a government we need to “I ka wa ma mua, I ka wa ma hope” we need to know our past before we can determine our best future. “He palapala aupuni ko’u” proclaimed by Kamehameha III my country shall be a country of literacy. We achieved the most literate country status in the world before the overthrow. The forced colonial settler mentality obliterated our Hawaiian identity and are perpetuating a racist colonial infrastructure, that continues to censor celebrations like the 200th anniversary of the Hae Hawaii created by Kamehameha I in 2016. Hawaiian who doesn’t commemorate this occasion that was founded by Kamehameha I in 1816 which commemorated the end of 800 years of war. Kamehameha Schools is participating in sustaining the brainwash, colonization, indoctrination and inculcation by not celebrating this achievement of their namesake. Hewa Loa!

Personal statement The product of an AHA and its ratification will unify and signal a new age of intelligence for the Hawaiian Community. The constitution must be crafted to co-exist with the United States in the Hawaiian Archipelago. It is my desire to participate in the drafting of such an important document and I would like to share my experiences as a delegate to the 1999 Native Hawaiian Convention in making this a reality. Mahalo for your support.
