Although some tropes are present in the game and are necessary to stay tonally consistent to the genre, I argued that much of the focus of the game is shifted from the typical situational horror of the monsters and violence to the overall narrative, effective dialogue, strategic use of cinematic elements, and character development throughout the course of the game.

Unfortunately, internal discrepancies are often dismissed as indicators of political ambivalence, or treated as formal flaws that need to be overcome. To address this gap, this dissertation draws from game studies, media studies, and political economics to investigate the contradictory relationships between popular games and neoliberalism, specifically in relation to playful forms of resistance and critique that emerge during gameplay.

  • Infinite Lives Canonvorming Bij Videogames
Infinite Lives Canonvorming bij videogames Bjorn Schrijen (S4134281) Masterscriptie Letterkunde Onder begeleiding van prof. dr. Jos Joosten en dr. Martijn Stevens 2015 Abstract As with most other forms of culture, an implicit canon exists for video games. Though most players and video game scholars will have a general idea about which titles constitute this canon, there has been no academic research yet about the exact contents of it, or – more importantly – about the processes that lead to canonization. This knowledge could however be very interesting, as it would not only give insight in the way the game industry works, but possibly also in processes of canon formation for other media. This thesis therefore tries to gain insight in the way an implicit video game canon is formed. In order to do this, the game industry is observed from a theoretical framework based on the works of Pierre Bourdieu. Canonical games are defined as games that retain a high amount of both symbolic and economic capital over a long time, and the different parties within the game industry are seen as actors that can allocate these forms of capital to specific games. By systematically studying the different actors and existing writings about them, several hypotheses are drawn about the influence of each actor on canonization. These hypotheses are then tested using a dataset containing 77 games that can be considered canonical. This set was created by combining ten very diverse lists with the best 100 games ever made. As most of these lists are already the result of multiple people’s votes, and only the games are selected that appear in a majority of the lists, this dataset gives a fairly good impression of the implicit game canon.

  • In-Game Minecraft Quests for Elementary Education
International Journal for Innovation Education and Research www.ijier.net Vol:-3 No-8, 2015 In-Game Minecraft Quests for Elementary Education Tony Morelli Mail Central Michigan University 1200 S Franklin St, Mt Pleasant, MI 48859 United States Abstract As elementary school students become more tech-savvy, they may expect more out of an education presentation. This paper presents methods to modify a popular game, Minecraft, to include educational elements. Two specific modifications demonstrating math concepts were completed and shown to adults. Surveys indicate that Minecraft playing adults feel the additional elements included in these modifications could be beneficial to students. 1. Introduction The United States has recently introduced the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which is a series of standards to create a consistent learning experience from state to state [15]. These standards lay out learning strategies and topics for English language arts and mathematics. The concepts presented in this paper are an effort to not only adhere to the new standards, but to also demonstrate learning through new tools that students view as entertainment. The approach is based on previous work regarding gaming in education, as well as education in virtual worlds. The use of gaming in a classroom is not a new topic as it has been around for almost 30 years with the use of Oregon Trail in education as early as 1985. Serious games have been integrated used in the classroom in different ways such as embedded in virtual worlds [13]. It also has been used to compare math learning strategies [10]. The approach in this paper seeks to combine these two schools of thought.

  • “Hey! Listen!”: Video Game Dialogue, Integrative Complexity and the Perception of Quality
Press Start “Hey! Listen!” “Hey! Listen!”: Video Game Dialogue, Integrative Complexity and the Perception of Quality Hayley McCullough Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Abstract As a research variable, integrative complexity has a long, well- documented history as a predictor and correlate for real-world phenomenon (for example, Conway, Suedfeld, & Tetlock, 2001 for a discussion on integrative complexity and war). Recently, McCullough & Conway (2017a) displayed the variable’s viability in the understanding of pop cultural domains. The present study builds upon this previous research and explores potential complexity differences between winning and losing video games at the Spike Video Game Awards. It compared the integrative complexity of a sample of video game dialogue for three categories (Best Shooter, Best RPG and Best Action/Adventure). Originally, individual ANOVAs revealed significant main effects for only the integrative and dialectical complexity for the Best Shooter category. An ad-hoc ANOVA of all three categories revealed similar results; however, across all analyses a consistent mean pattern emerged: The winning games averaged lower complexity scores than the losing games. These findings suggest a general association between simplistic dialogue and high-quality video games, providing keen insight into the underlying psychology of video games, and establishes a strong foundation for future research.
