COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have.

Hedges 1 Cinematic Memory and the Southern Imaginary: Crisis in the Deep South and The Phenix City Story Gareth Robert Andrew Hedges A Thesis in the Department of the Humanities Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Concordia University Montréal, Québec, Canada June 2016 © Gareth Robert Andrew Hedges, 2016 Hedges 2 Hedges iii Abstract Cinematic Memory and the Southern Imaginary: Crisis in the Deep South and The Phenix City Story Gareth Hedges, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2016 This dissertation is a historical and theoretical study of the southern imaginary at the intersection of mass and regional culture. The focus is on two cinematic treatments of significant violent crimes in the region during the 1950s: firstly, the assassination of Albert Patterson, which prompted the clean of the “wide open” town of Phenix City, Alabama; and secondly, the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi, which played a critical role in accelerating the African American freedom struggle. The Phenix City Story (Allied Artists, 1955), and Crisis in the Deep South, an unproduced 1956 screenplay written by Crane Wilbur, were both products of the media frenzy surrounding these actual events and they each involved investigation and research into local circumstances as part of their development and production. Rooted in film studies, history and cultural studies, the method of this thesis is to look backward to the foundational elements of the texts in question (e.g., the ‘raw material’ of the actual historical events,), and forward to the consequences of cinematic intervention into local commemorative regimes. In this way, I chart how the overlaps and interconnections between these film projects and others of the era reveal the emergence, consolidation and dissolution of a larger “cycles of sensation,” a concept outlined by Frank Krutnik and Peter Stanfield.

  • Chapter 10 | Cinemascope: the Modern Miracle You See Without Glasses
    10. CinemaScope The Modern Miracle You See Without Glasses The brand name conjures up a time when Hollywood bet on overstuffed spectacle— harem cuties, beefcakes wrapped in togas, and hoofers with Ipana smiles, all splashed across screens the size of billboards. For film buffs, the very word (double-capped) spurs misty nostalgia and murmurs about mise-en-scène. But you could reasonably ask, What’s all the fuss? Despite Twentieth Century Fox’s aspirations, the wide- screen process known as CinemaScope never dominated the industry’s output. Some studios ignored it; others abandoned it quite quickly. Major older directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille never worked with it, and those who tried it, like Howard Hawks (Land of the Pharaohs, 1955) and John Ford (The Long Gray Line, 1955; Mister Roberts, 1955), weren’t enthusiastic. In Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt (1963), Fritz Lang, who made Moonfleet (1955) in Scope, famously pronounced it as good only for filming snakes and funerals. Nor was Scope a proven money spinner. Granted, the first 1953 features, especially The Robe and How to Marry a Millionaire, caught fire at the box office. But soon each year’s top five hits included only one or two Scope titles. Of the 10 top-grossing movies of the 1950s, only 3 (Lady and the Tramp, 1955; The Robe; and The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) were in Scope.1 Scope pictures claimed a share of Academy 281 282 Poetics of Cinema Awards, mostly technical ones, but only two films ever won Best Picture honors.
