Taboo: Why are Real-Life British Serial Killers Rarely Represented on Film? Antony Robert Earnshaw Sheffield Hallam University MA English by Research September 2017 1 Abstract This thesis assesses changing British attitudes to the dramatisation of crimes committed by domestic serial killers and highlights the dearth of films made in this country on this subject. It discusses the notion of taboos and, using empirical and historical research, illustrates how filmmakers’ attempts to initiate productions have been vetoed by social, cultural and political sensitivities. Comparisons are drawn between the prevalence of such product in the United States and its uncommonness in Britain, emphasising the issues around the importing of similar foreign material for exhibition on British cinema screens and the importance of geographic distance to notions of appropriateness. The influence of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is evaluated. This includes a focus on how a central BBFC policy – the so- called 30-year rule of refusing to classify dramatisations of ‘recent’ cases of factual crime – was scrapped and replaced with a case-by-case consideration that allowed for the accommodation of a specific film championing a message of tolerance.

  • Richard Fleischer

1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

  • Steinhart Runaway Hollywood Chapter3
Chapter 3 Lumière, Camera, Azione! the personnel and practices of hollywood’s mode of international production as hollywood filmmakers gained more experience abroad over the years, they devised various production strategies that could be shared with one another. A case in point: in May 1961, Vincente Minnelli was preparing the production of Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), part of which he planned to shoot in Rome. Hollywood flmmaker Jean Negulesco communicated with Minnelli, ofering some advice on work- ing in Italy, where Negulesco had directed portions of Tree Coins in the Fountain (1954) and Boy on a Dolphin (1957) and at the time was producing his next flm, Jessica (1962): I would say that the most difcult and the most important condition of mak- ing a picture in Italy is to adapt yourself to their spirit, to their way of life, to their way of working. A small example: Tis happened to me on location. As I arrive on the set and everything is ready to be done at 9 o’clock—the people are having cofee. Now, your assistant also is having cofee—and if you are foolish enough to start to shout and saying you want to work, right away you’ll have an unhappy crew and not the cooperation needed for the picture. But if you have cofee with them, they will work for you with no time limit or no extra expense.1 Negulesco’s letter underscores a key lesson that Hollywood moviemakers learned overseas when confronted with diferent working hours, production practices, and cultural customs.

THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 22, Number 3 Thursday, January 26, 2006 Take a Fantastic Voyage into Virtual Reality by Paula McHugh The Beacher took a fantastic voyage into the halls of ivy recently. We of the dinosaur generation— meaning we received our education via blackboards and Coronet films—were to encounter a learning environment at Valparaiso University that promotes new insights for engineering and sci- ence students. It’s called the Vis Lab, short for Scientific Visualization Laboratory, and it is open to the public twice a week for tours and demonstrations. You might at first think when entering the little room in Gellerson Hall that you’ve walked into a state-of-the-art theatre. The “star” of the Vis Lab is the Vis Box, which pro- jects high resolution 3-D images upon a screen. But instead of theatre seating, the student (or visitor) stands on a plat- form directly in front of the screen, and, With a pair of polarized goggles, a student or visitor can visually explore the structure of microbes. donning a pair of polarized goggles, enters the world of Virtual Reality. Vis Lab Director Jeff Will and research assistant Mike Steffen host the regularly-scheduled public open houses for anyone who is curious to see how the advancement of computer technology has changed the world of learning in the 21st century. For a writer depen- dent upon words on a page, the experience was over- whelming. For a molecular biologist or electrical engineer formerly restricted to formulas on a chalk- board, the world of Virtual Reality translates into images that can be observed from any number of different per- spectives.
