    John Blasberg 12/10/14 Econ 1400 Examination of Bias in ESPN’s News Reporting 2010-2014 Abstract This paper studies the effect geography, market size, and popularity have on the coverage ESPN awards teams following their appearance in 52 Monday Night football games between 2010 and 2014. I show that, contrary to popular belief, these factors play a very limited role in determining coverage share received by winning teams in written “Game Recaps” while having no measureable effect on attention paid to losing teams. Even though regional and market based biases are not conclusively present in these written reports, the possibility of slant in other ESPN offerings cannot be ruled out. Introduction Since 1979, ESPN has existed as the premier cable and satellite television destination for sports related programming. Its offerings encompass a wide range of areas including live game broadcasts, sporting news and talk shows, documentary films, and other original programming. The self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports” reaches 97,736,000 households in the United States (85.58% of American households with at least one television)1, and yet, despite this near total saturation of the American market, is frequently criticized for slanting its coverage to favor certain regions over others. A prime example of this common perception is the so-called “East Coast Bias”, or idea that the North American sports media gives more extensive coverage and attention to teams and athletes on the east coast than their counterparts on the west coast.2 In 2009, Heath Bell, then a pitcher for the San Diego Padres, echoed the frustrations of fans from supposedly underserved geographies when he said, “I truly believe ESPN only cares about promoting the [Boston] Red Sox and [New York] Yankees and Mets – and nobody else.”3 A lengthy article in the October 2014 issue of Rolling Stone suggested the possibility that the network was trying to influence the outcomes of the inaugural College Football Playoff with the content of its coverage.

Hextrum3 Abstract One of the long-standing trends in research on gender in sports media is the lack of coverage of women’s sport and the lack of respectful, serious coverage of women’s sport. In this article, we critically interrogate the assumption that the media simply provide fans with what they ‘‘want to see’’ (i.e., men’s sports). Using quantitative and qualitative analysis, we examine 6 weeks of the televised news media coverage on the local news affiliates in Los Angeles (KABC, KNBC, and KCBS) and on a nationally broadcast sports news and highlight show, ESPN’s SportsCenter.Part of an ongoing longitudinal study, the findings demonstrate that the coverage of women’s sport is the lowest ever. We argue that the amount of coverage of women’s sports and the quality of that coverage illustrates the ways in which the news media build audiences for men’s sport while silencing and marginalizing women’s sport.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: IRRELEVANT GENIUS: PROFESSIONAL ECONOMISTS AND POLICYMAKING IN THE UNITED STATES, 1880-1929 Jonathan S. Franklin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation Directed By: Professor David B. Sicilia, Department of History The rapid establishment and expansion of economics departments in colleges across the United State in the late nineteenth century indicates a significant shift in the way Americans understood economic science and its importance to federal economic policy. This dissertation addresses that phenomenon by explaining how American economists professionalized; and how that process influenced economic policymaking in the U.S. from the formation of the American Economic Association in 1885 to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Chapters alternate between analyzing the dilemmas economists faced while crafting a distinct academic discipline and investing early professional economists’ role in the federal economic policymaking process. Three emerging themes help explain the consistent failure of early U.S. economists to translate modern economic theory to economic policy in a timely fashion. First, public skepticism and the persistence of folk economics proved to be a powerful deterrent to professionally-trained economists’ authority in debates over policy matters. The combination of democratic idealism, populist politics, and skepticism regarding the motivations of professionally-trained economists undercut much of the social prestige professional economists garnered as educated elites. Second, disagreement among professional economists, often brought on by young economists’ efforts to overturn a century’s worth of received wisdom in classical economic theory, fostered considerable dissent within the field. Dissent, in turn, undermined the authority of professional economists and often led to doubt regarding economists’ abilities among the public and policy compromises that failed to solve economic problems.

It came in the form of a tropical system that gathered south of the West Indies in late October 2012. After ripping roofs off houses and flooding streets across Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Cuba, Tropical Storm Sandy became Hurricane Sandy and veered north. On the night of Octo- ber 29, 2012, it slammed New York City with a thirteen- foot wall of water. The surge shredded boardwalks, flipped cars on their sides, and lifted beach houses off their foundations. As avenues became filthy estuaries, a flooded power substation on the East River exploded and lit up my apartment with a sputtering, eerie flash. A third of Manhattan’s twinkling skyline went dark. On Staten Island, people drowned in their living rooms. Fires raged across whole blocks of the Rockaways in Queens. All told, Sandy killed a hundred and forty- eight people across the Northeast, contributed to the deaths of a hundred more, and left tens of thousands homeless. Over the next few days it felt like the city was slipping out of the modern world and into a postapocalyptic future.
