They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139). -

Maria von Trapp gründet mit Hilfe des Hauskaplans einen Famili- enchor, und nimmt, ermuntert durch Lotte Leh- mann, 1937 an dem Volkssängerwettbewerb der Salzburger Festspiele statt, den sie gewinnen. Mit dem Zug geht es über Italien, die Schweiz und Frankreich nach Eng- land, von dort mit dem Schiff nach New York. 1 Lailah White Professor Penner Word Count: 2091 ENG 1121 English Composition 2 Unit 2 Writing Assignment 5 April 2020 Situational Comedies and The Changing Narrative Part 1: General Analysis History and Social Impact A sitcom, situational comedy, is a genre of comedy on television or a streaming service centered on a fixed amount of characters who carry over from episode to episode. The impact of this particular genre mainly contributes to the reflection of the current standards of society. Although not all sitcoms show every aspect of society, these shows allow their audience to relate to the characters as if they are people that they know personally. Humor is the main reason why people tune into sitcoms. The audience wants to see life’s difficulties in an enjoyable way, which may be a contrast to their own realities in the physical world. The sitcom genre actually started on the radio before it rose to fame on television. Situational comedies began appearing on American television around the 1950s. Sitcoms soon became a staple genre of American TV because it was different from other shows at the time. This is because the character stayed the same, as well as the setting of each episode. The debut of shows like “I Love Lucy” (CBS, 1951–57), was the start of a revolution in American television. The show was setting up new standards. This show was shot on film instead of live broadcasting. 2 Another difference was the location being somewhere other than Hollywood. It followed a style of a consistent series rather than that of a variety show. -

This article uses Critical Race Theory as a useful framework for unpacking defences that hinged both on the colour-blindness of white British audiences, and the simultaneous existence of wider customs of blacking up within British television and film. I examine a range of 'screen culture' from the 1920s to the 1970s, including feature films, home movies, newsreels, and television, that provide evidence of the existence of blackface as a type of racialised custom in British entertainment throughout this period. Efforts by organisations such as CARD, black-press publications like Flamingo, and audiences of colour, to name blacking up and minstrelsy as racist in the late 1960s were met by fierce resistance from majority white audiences and producers, who denied their authority to do so. -
