For creating what everyone is reading The Sound of Music—that iconic film we sat and watched every Easter weekend for as long The vonVange Family as I can remember. The original stage version before being transformed into the movie that For something old, something borrowed, that without we would be blue we all know and love (except my Dad—it was a bit too saccharine for him), makes a few & claims you might not be familiar with. The decisions the Captain makes are not nearly as clear cut. The waters tend to be a little muddy—Elsa is not disliked by the children and Max Joan Fretz is not disliked by the Nazis. The Captain breaks up with the Baroness not for his children but For being my mentor, my protector, my confessor & most of all my friend for political reasons, only to find love in the arms of the novice who served as governess to I’ll miss you . his children. Love is portrayed in different forms: Rolf & Liesl, the innocence of first love that and to those I forgot ends unhappily—The Captain & the Baroness, a brokered love between two wealthy people (I apologize in advance) who cannot see eye to eye as the Anschluss approaches—Max & money, on nobody’s side but his own, living off the rich and not afraid to play ball with the new regime—Maria & the – Schwendy Captain, a young woman who teaches a man who has become bitter at the loss of his wife (who fears his children for they are reminders of that lost love) to let love enter his heart ............ once more—and finally, the von Trapp children and their new found family, a new mother who understood them at first blush and a father who reclaims their hearts. They truly are The Sound of Music is produced with the permission of “no ordinary couple” and are to be admired for their savvy, their gumption, and the courage to face the Germans and the world together. THE SOUND OF MUSIC Wednesday, October 7, 2015 Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles THE SOUND OF MUSIC The Sound of Music is a stage and film musical based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the memoir of Maria von Trapp. The story takes place in Austria at the brink of World War II. Maria, a plucky nun turned governess, is charged with caring for the seven children of a military captain. Maria’s delightful teaching of music to the children leads to their becoming a celebrated touring act, the innocence of which is shattered as the realities of Nazi rule become inescapable. Notably, many details of the von Trapp family story were changed to increase the dramatic impact of the musical version. Inspired by a pair of German films about the von Trapps from the mid-1950s, the stage version of The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959. The production won multiple Tony Awards, and the show has been revived many times since, including a renowned 1998 Broadway revival. The 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews won five Academy Awards and is still beloved today by viewers around the world. Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songs of The Sound of Music—including “My Favorite Things,” “Do, Re, Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song—have been celebrated for more than half a century. RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN Composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein were one of the most prolific, successful songwriting teams in the history of musical theatre. The pair’s first collaboration, Oklahoma! (1943), marked the start of a new theatrical genre: the musical play, which combined elements of musical comedy, operetta, and drama.

Die in Wien geborene Waise gehört dem Bund Neuland an, einem 1919 gegründeten katholischer Verband, der sie nach- haltig prägt. Zwei Jahre später heiraten von Tapp und Maria, 1929 und 1931 werden zwei Töchter geboren. 1933 verliert von Trapp sein gesamtes Vermögen durch die Fehlspekulation seiner Hausbank. Die Hausangestellten werden entlassen, die Familie zieht in deren Zimmer unter den Dachstuhl und vermietet die Bel Etage an Festspielgäste und Künstler, unter anderem an die weltberühmte Wie- ner Sängerin Lotte Lehmann. Maria von Trapp gründet mit Hilfe des Hauskaplans einen Famili- enchor, und nimmt, ermuntert durch Lotte Leh- mann, 1937 an dem Volkssängerwettbewerb der Salzburger Festspiele statt, den sie gewinnen. Es folgt ein erstes Radiokonzert und das Angebot einer Konzertreise durch Amerika. 1938 erfolgt der Anschluss Österreichs an das Dritte Reich und der als kaisertreu bekannte Georg von Trapp befürchtet Repressalien, zumal er ein Konzert der Familie zu Hitlers Geburtstag abge- lehnt hatte. Er vermietet das Haus an einen geist- lichen Orden und emigriert mit der gesamten Familie und dem Chorleiter und Hauskaplan Georg Wasner in die USA. Mit dem Zug geht es über Italien, die Schweiz und Frankreich nach Eng- land, von dort mit dem Schiff nach New York. Maria is full of energy, passionate, country girl who has a charming but gawky, awkward physicality and personality, naive, naughty, witty, strong- minded, and tomboyish. Needs to have an obvious connection with children and an ability to relate at their level. Captain Georg Von Trapp- (Age: 40) SING / DANCE / ACT A retired very wealthy Austro-Hungarian Naval Lieutenant Commander, distinguished, active, handsome, highly organized and regimented, efficient and very smart. The Captain is a widower with seven children who is strong and firm with a hidden softness. The Mother Abbess of Nonnberg Abbey- (Age: 40+) SING / ACT A true big-hearted mother figure, loved, adored and respected. Baroness Elsa Schraeder- (Age: 40’s) SING / ACT A very wealthy widow, who is president of her late husband’s corporation. Elegant, sophisticated city person. Clever and canny and very much into making a good social arrangement Max Detwieler -(Age: 40-50) SING / DANCE / ACT A theatrical agent and First Secretary of Education and Culture- personal friend of von Trapp and a sort of uncle to his children. He is clever at his job, witty and charming though quite pushy to get what he wants. We are not sure whose side he is on until the last moment. Witt and humor personality of the show. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods.
