Munhall, PA – Be sure to include Steel Valley HiGh School Drama Club’s production of “The Sound of Music” in your weekend plans! The show will run Thursday – Saturday (Feb. 21, 22 and 23) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in the HiGh School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students in Grades K-12. The production is based on the book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse; the music of Richard RodGers; and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. This final collaboration between RodGers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. The story centers on a postulant who proves to be too hiGh-spirited for the reliGious life who is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Her GrowinG rapport with the younGsters, coupled with her Generosity of spirit, Gradually captures the heart of the stern captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.     Witham Amateur Operatic Society The Sound of Music Friday 31st October 2014 Adjudicator: William Hooper. Co-adjudicator: Andrew Hodgson (who attended on Thursday 30th October). Introduction Ah, ‘The Sound of Music’. So often derided as sentimental, cheesy schmaltz, it is, in fact, without doubt, one of the greats of the Broadway musical cannon: performed and performed again, by professionals and amateurs alike; filling theatres repeatedly as it does. This was the last of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals and, like so many of their previous shows, it lives on in a timeless magic, causing hearts to soar and toes to tap – repeatedly. Oscar Hammerstein may not have been the most naturally-gifted of writers, but he had a wonderful, folksy optimism, and a sublime capacity to capture the human spirit in all its beauty and indomitability; putting substance before style, and honesty of characterisation at the heart of his musicals. Richard Rodgers, by contrast, had all the talent in the world, and used it to good effect in some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written. Together, their musicals will live as long as musical theatre lives. WAOS have, in my experience, enjoyed something of a purple patch in recent times, producing a number of exceptionally good shows, with strong casts and intelligent and imaginative direction. The Sound of Music is so familiar to audiences, and so often performed, that many productions can appear tired and a little stale. The challenge, therefore, was for WAOS to sprinkle a bit of fresh magic on the show, and bring the story, the characters and the songs fully to life, and make it seem as fresh and joyful as it did 55 years ago.

    “The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

Following the success of Mamma Mia! at the Regent Theatre, Taieri Musical Society is returning to Coronation Hall in Mosgiel with the uplifting true story of Maria Rainer, a Postulant at Nonnberg Abby, who becomes a governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp, changing their lives through her love of music, against the backdrop of impending war. The Sound of Music runs from 14th through 23rd May 2015, and is directed by Denise Henderson, with musical director Steve Miles and assistant musical director Charlotte McKay. ABOUT THE SHOW The longest running Broadway musical of the early 1960s, The Sound of Music marked the last collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960). Based partially on Maria Von Trapp's autobiography, The Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music includes a remarkable number of popular songs, such as The Sound of Music, My Favourite Things, Climb Every Mountain, Do-Re-Mi, and Edelweiss. The setting for The Sound of Music is Salzburg, Austria, where Maria, a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, is too free-spirited to accept the discipline of the order easily and frequently escapes to the mountains. Thus, the Mother Abbess arranges for Maria to work as a governess for the wealthy, aristocratic Captain George Von Trapp—a widower with seven children. By adding music and outdoor expeditions to the children's normally rigorous schedule, Maria wins the children's hearts.

HARBURG’S WARTIME MUSICAL BLOOMER GIRL (1944) Sarah Jean England, Master of Arts, 2013 Directed By: Professor Patrick Warfield, School of Music The Broadway musical Bloomer Girl (1944) with score by composer Harold Arlen (1905–1986) and lyricist E.Y. Harburg (1896–1981) was the first book musical to follow in the footsteps of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! The obvious parallels between Oklahoma! and Bloomer Girl led critics and scholars to compare the musicals at the expense of overlooking the contributions the latter made to the genre. This thesis moves Bloomer Girl out from the shadow cast by Oklahoma! and situates it within a richer historical context. It begins with a brief history of Bloomer Girl. It then focuses specifically on both the dramatic and musical representation of women in the work.
