Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways. -

Artist Bios Alex Katz Is the Author of Invented Symbols
Artist Bios Alex Katz is the author of Invented Symbols: An Art Autobiography. Current exhibitions include “Alex Katz: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art” at the Nassau County Museum of Art and “Alex Katz: Beneath the Surface” at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. Jan Henle grew up in St. Croix and now works in Puerto Rico. His film drawings are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. His collaborative film with Vivien Bittencourt, Con El Mismo Amor, was shown at the Gwang Ju Biennale in 2008 and is currently in the ikono On Air Festival. Juan Eduardo Gómez is an American painter born in Colombia in 1970. He came to New York to study art and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1998. His paintings are in the collections of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick. He was awarded The Richard and Hilda Rosenthal Foundation Award from American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2007. Rudy Burckhardt was born in Basel in 1914 and moved to New York in 1935. From then on he was at or near the center of New York’s intellectual life, counting among his collaborators Edwin Denby, Paul Bowles, John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Kenneth Koch, Alex Katz, Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, and many others. His work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, the Museum of the City of New York, and, in 2013, at Museum der Moderne Salzburg. -

The MuSeUITI Of Modem Art For Immediate Release January 1987 FIFTY-ONE YEARS OF FILM BY RUDY BURCKHARDT TO BE SCREENED AT MoMA BEGINNING FEBRUARY 6 The unprecedented fifty-one year career of independent filmmaker Rudy Burckhardt will be celebrated in a major film retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, beginning Friday, February 6, 1987. Mr. Burckhardt, who is also a noted photographer and painter, will introduce the exhibition with a program of films entitled "The Streets of New York" on February 6 at 6:30 p.m. THE FILMS OF RUDY BURCKHARDT has been organized by Laurence Kardish, curator in the Museum's Department of Film, and the novelist and essayist Phillip Lopate, who have arranged sixty-seven films into fourteen thematically-related programs. The exhibition includes Mr. Burckhardt's first film, 145 West 21 (1936), with Aaron Copland, Paul Bowles, Paula Miller, and Virgil Thomson, and his most recent, Digital Venus (1987). The films in the exhibition include both fiction and poetic documentaries, revealing Mr. Burckhardt's lyrical eye and gentle playfulness, especially in his depiction of New York City street scenes and his "travel diaries." He has created several short comedies in collaboration with a wide variety of New York City artists, including the painters Alex Katz and Red Grooms, and the poets John Ashbery and Edwin Denby. In addition, he made films with the late surrealist artist and filmmaker Joseph Cornell and with the dancers Paul Taylor and Douglas Dunn. Concurrent with the Museum's film exhibition are shows of Mr. Burckhardt's paintings at the Blue Mountain Gallery, 121 Wooster Street, New York City, February 6-25, and photographs at the Brooke Alexander Gallery, 59 Wooster Street, New York City, February 10-March 7. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The years immediately following the First World War were extremely important for the formulation of Britain's policy towards Egypt, a British Protectorate since 1914. In this connection, the years 1922 to 1925, the last years of Lord Allenby's tenure as Britain's High Commissioner in Egypt, were critical. Allenby, who was appointed in 1919 in order to suppress nationalist- inspired rioting in Egypt, adopted a surprising policy of moderation. He soon forced the British government to unilaterally declare Egypt's independence in 1922. This apparent success was followed by the adoption of a modern consti tution in Egypt and the British withdrawal from the entanglements of Egypt's administration. Still Allenby's career ended in seeming frustration in 1925: negotiations between Britain and Egypt failed in 1924, to be followed by the assassination of the British Governor General of the Sudan, Sir Lee z' Stack, and Allenby's harsh ultimatum to the Egyptian government in November 1924 effectively reinstituting British control of Egypt's administration. -

October 2014 Press Announcement Rudy Burckhardt – In the Jungle of the Big City Photographs and Films 1932 – 1959 Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, 25 October 2014 to 15 February 2015 Press preview: 24 October 2014, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, opening: from 6 p.m. The Swiss photographer Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) arrived in New York for the first time as a 21-year-old and immediately decided to stay. Overwhelmed by the sheer size of the metropolis, the architectural diversity and the hustle and bustle on the streets, he began to process his impressions in photographs and films. The photographs and short films he produced until the early 1950s are a combination of straightforwardness and formal strictness, contrasting perspectives, the inclusion of chance as well as lyrical concentration, all of which make up a radically modern pictorial language which was way ahead of its time then, but surprises and fascinates us all the more today. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the Fotostiftung Schweiz is presenting the exhibition “Rudy Burckhardt – In the Jungle of the Big City”, providing an opportunity to discover anew the photographic and filmic oeuvre of that highly individual artist. Rudy Burckhardt never really felt at home in the established patrician family into which he was born in Basel in 1914. At an early age he preferred to hang around in the slightly disreputable area of Kleinbasel, instead of seeking a social position in what was referred to in Basel as the “Daig” (“dough”), meaning the upper echelons of society. Around the same time he became interested in the new pictorial medium of photography, which was very much in the air in the 1930s. -

Humbert-Droz: The Congress Presidium has received almost a thousand messages of greetings from every part of Russia and the world. We can- not read all these greetings here. But among them are two statements that the Presidium believes to be particularly important. The first is the greetings of the Vladivostok Soviet of Workers’, Peasants’, and Red Army Soldiers’ Deputies to proletarians around the world. (Applause) (Reads:) Greetings of the Vladivostok Soviet of Workers’, Peasants’, and Red Army Soldiers’ Deputies Comrades, warmed by the rays of the red soviet star, we send you our proletarian greetings from the coast of the Pacific Ocean. After four immensely difficult years of Japanese intervention and the atro- cious havoc wreaked by White Guards, the Soviet 192 • Session 5 – 11 November 1922 of Workers’, Peasants’, and Red Army Soldiers’ Deputies met today in liber- ated Vladivostok. The countless victims among the working people of Russia have not fallen in vain. After a long and bloody struggle, the Red Army has taken control of the last inch of Russian territory that was previously in the power of the hirelings of Japanese militarism. The proletariat of the coastal region has greeted its liberation with enthusiasm, branding with a curse the Black Hundreds that fled in cowardly fashion.1 For the first time, the powerful workers’ and peasants’ army paraded its victorious banners through the streets of the now free city. -

EDWIN DENBY’S NEW YORK SCHOOL MARY MAXWELL In 1963 Frank O’Hara threw a party for Edwin Denby’s sixtieth birthday. The invitation was printed with an acrostic poem by O’Hara entitled ‘‘Edwin’s Hand.’’ The first stanzas read: Easy to love, but di≈cult to please, he walks densely as a child in the midst of spectacular needs to understand. Desire makes our enchanter gracious, and naturally he’s surprised to be. And so are you to be you, when he smiles. At O’Hara’s funeral three years later (a gathering at which Larry Rivers announced that ‘‘there are at least sixty people in New York who thought Frank O’Hara was their best friend’’), Denby was the first friend to speak, ‘‘standing Lincoln-like and low-voiced under the big elm at Springs,’’ according to Bill Berkson. Of O’Hara’s R 65 66 MAXWELL sudden death, Denby later said, ‘‘Some people never recovered; in ways, I never did.’’ One of the ways Denby did not recover (though he himself would never have said so) was that as a poet, he had lost his most important advocate. His first collection of poems, In Public, in Private, for example, had been praised by O’Hara in 1957 as ‘‘an increasingly important book for the risks it takes in successfully establishing a specifically American spoken diction which has a classical firmness and clarity under his hand.’’ And though Denby is still universally lauded as the most important and influential American dance critic of the twentieth century, he remains rela- tively unknown as a poet beyond a small group of enthusiasts.
