Abstract This thesis examines a number of miracle collections and hagiographies written by Winchester monks in the late tenth century. It compares three different accounts of the cult of Swithun by Lantfred, Wulfstan and Ӕlfric, as well as comparing Wulfstan‟s and Ӕlfric‟s Vita Ӕthelwoldi. There were two main objectives to the thesis. The first was to examine whether an analysis of miracle narratives could tell us anything important about how a monastic community perceived itself, especially in relation to the wider world? This was tested by applying approaches used by Thomas Head and Raymond Van Dam to an Anglo- Saxon context. -

Hereward 'the Wake' and the Barony of Bourne: a Reassessment of a Fenland Legend [1] Hereward, generally known as 'the Wake', is second only to Robin Hood in the pantheon of English heroes. From at least the early twelfth century his deeds were celebrated in Anglo-Norman aristocratic circles, and he was no doubt the subject of many a popular tale and song from an early period. [2] But throughout the Middle Ages Hereward's fame was local, being confined to the East Midlands and East Anglia. [3] It was only in the nineteenth century that the rebel became a truly national icon with the publication of Charles Kingsley novel Hereward the Wake .[4] The transformation was particularly Victorian: Hereward is portrayed as a prototype John Bull, a champion of the English nation. The assessment of historians has generally been more sober. Racial overtones have persisted in many accounts, but it has been tacitly accepted that Hereward expressed the fears and frustrations of a landed community under threat. Paradoxically, however, in the light of the nature of that community, the high social standing that the tradition has accorded him has been denied. [5] The earliest recorded notice of Hereward is the almost contemporary annal for 1071 in the D version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. A Northern recension probably produced at York,[6] its account of the events in the fenland are terse. It records the plunder of Peterborough in 1070 'by the men that Bishop Æthelric [late of Durham] had excommunicated because they had taken there all that he had', and the rebellion of Earls Edwin and Morcar in the following year. -

As part of the governments #buildbackbetter initiative, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in association with Historic England, provided £1.5m to 22 areas to develop their Local Lists. Peterborough was successful in its bid and has received £38,000. These 22 areas, which also includes the neighbouring Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire are test pilots in investigating different ways in which Local Lists can be developed and improved upon. The two main strands of Peterborough’s bid were its record of being at the forefront of the development of Local Lists and its proposed innovation with regard its digital submission. Peterborough was one on the first adopters of the Local List, and has been periodically adding new entries since its first adoption in 2012. Although the adopted heritage assets are concentrated in and around the city centre, the ratio of Locally Listed builds to statutorily Listed buildings of 30% is of a higher magnitude than the majority of other Local List’, demonstrating its extent. This percentage is simply a good baseline for which the project aims to substantially improve. -

The central argument is that feud was a method that Anglo-Saxons used to understand and settle conflict, and that it was a tool kings used to enhance their power. The first part of this study examines the use of fæhð in Old English documents, including laws and Beowulf, to demonstrate that fæhð referred to feuds between parties marked by reciprocal acts of retaliation. -

In it, I study the hagiographies written about the royal female saints of Ely by the Flemish monk Goscelin of Saint-Bertin in the late eleventh century as a form of postcolonial literature and memory creation. Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism. -
How Lyminge Parish Church Acquired an Invented Dedication
ANTIQUARIANS, VICTORIAN PARSONS AND RE-WRITING THE PAST: HOW LYMINGE PARISH CHURCH ACQUIRED AN INVENTED DEDICATION ROBERT BALDWIN For more than a century, the residents of Lyminge, on the North Downs in East Kent, have taken for granted that the parish church is dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelburga. Yet for many centuries before that, it was known as the church of St Mary and St Eadburg. The dedication to St Mary, the Virgin, is ancient and straightforward to explain, for it appears in the earliest of the surviving charters forLyminge dated probably to 697. 1 The second part of the dedication, whether this is correctly St Ethelburga or St Eadburg, is also likely to pre-date the Norman Conquest for both are clearly Anglo-Saxon names. But the uncertainty over the dedication invites investigation to understand who the patron saint actually is and the cause of the change, which is an unusual event by any standards. At first sight, St Ethelburga is apparently also easy to explain. Although there were a number of St Ethelburgas, the one traditionally connected with Lyminge was Queen LEthelburh2, daughter of LEthelberht I, King of Kent, and widow of Edwin, King of Northumbria. The story of her marriage to Edwin, his conversion to Christianity and the beginning of the conversion of Northumbria in the 620s was recorded by Bede, writing around a century later.3 AfterEdwin's death in battle in 633, Bede noted that LEthelburh returned to Kent where her brother Eadbald had become king. Other sources4 recounted that the king allowed his sister to retire to his estate at Lyminge where she established a 'minster'5 and subsequently died in 647.6 A dedication to St Ethelburga makes sense in the historical context ofLyminge. -

Old English macian, Its Origin and Dissemination Sherman M. Kuhn University of Michigan Some years ago I published a study of the overlapping senses of two Middle English verbs, don and ~J~M. In it (Kuhn 1980:5-6), I observed that, whereas Old English dix was a common verb found in all known dialects of OE,’ maciax and 9amaciaa were rare--hardly to be found outside the West Saxon dialect and totally absent from OE before King Alfred’s time. I mentioned the five instances of the rare verbs in the works of Alfred and the single specimen of 9amaciaa in Caaasi.r B, a poem translated from Old Saxon, probably in the latter half of the ninth century, although it appears in a MS of about the year 1000. I suggested that OE 9a) macias had been borrowed f rom Old Saxon and was even tempted to speculate that John the Old Saxon, one of the king’s mass- priests, was Alf red’s immediate source for the words. I characterized both as WS because, from Alfred’s time to the end of the OE period, all examples that I had been able to find appeared in WS or mixed-WS texts. Since my principal concern in 19742 was the behavior of the ME verbs, I had no occasion to elaborate on the earlier history of md~an at that time. I planned, however, to present the OE and OS evidence in a separate article. I had also begun to suspect that the ultimate source of the word would be found, not in OS, but in Old High German, and I needed time to make some- thing more than a cursory examination of the OHG evidence. -

Chapter 4 The Anglian Period: The Royal Ladies of Castor [1] St. Kyneburgha of Castor: from Mercian princess to Northumbrian queen Castor Parish Church stands upon an escarpment, which has been occupied from at least the Roman period. It bears a unique dedication to the seventh-century saint, Kyneburgha or Cyneburh, a Mercian princess and erstwhile queen of Northumbria who, according to local tradition, retired from court in order to establish a nunnery on the site of an abandoned early fourth-century villa. Reliable, near-contemporary information relating to Kyneburgha is limited to a single reference in Venerable Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica (c. 731), in which she was described as the sister of Peada, King of the Middle Angles, and the wife of Alhfrith, a Christian prince of Northumbria [2]. From this statement we may deduce that she was also the daughter of the unrepentant heathen king, Penda of Mercia (c. 626-c. 655), and his consort, Cynewise, whose stronghold was in the Tamworth area of the Trent Valley [3]. All subsequent references to Kyneburgha are either of post-Conquest date or survive only in the form of twelfth-century copies and, consequently, are much less trustworthy [4]. Nor are there any archaeological finds to substantiate Kyneburgha’s relationship with the Castor site. However, by examining all of the available sources, in conjunction with place-name and sculptural evidence, it may be possible to gain an insight into the life and times of this remarkable lady. Kyneburgha was born during an era when England was ruled by a few aristocratic families, both Christian and pagan, who intermarried in attempts to form alliances and to found dynasties in rival provinces. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Winchester Research Repository Chapter 26 Ely Cathedral and the Afterlife of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth Katherine Weikert In 1154, seven Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian men were translated to the new Norman cathedral at Ely (Cambs.) and reburied together in a single monu- ment in the north transept of the cathedral.1 One of these men was the Ealdor- man Byrhtnoth. Byrhtnoth is of course a well-known figure in late Anglo-Saxon England with a relatively rich documentary record for the period. He witnessed a number of charters through a long career in the reigns of Æthelred, Edgar, Edward, Eadwig and Eadred,2 and was named in the wills of his father-in-law, Ealdorman Ælfgar, and sister-in-law, Æthelflæd.3 He gained a reputation as a virtuous man and spoke in defence of monks who would have been expelled in favour of secular clergy during the ‘anti-monastic’ reaction following the death of King Edgar in 975.4 He predeceased his wife Ælfflæd and so is not men- tioned in her will, but there are numerous notices of their joint gifts as well as the gifts of their extended family in Liber Eliensis (ii.62–64). His death is re- corded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as well as Liber Eliensis, and in more he- roic form in the Vita Oswaldi as well as in the well-known poem “The Battle of Maldon.”5 This text has been used more than any other in medieval and mod- ern times to reconstruct the persona of this famous and heroic man.
