In his poem, “The Riverbank Field,” from his latest collection, Human Chain, Heaney engages in metatranslation, “Ask me to translate what Loeb gives as / ‘In a retired vale…a sequestered grove’ / And I’ll confound the Lethe in Moyola.” Curiously, with a broad spectrum of classical works at his disposal, the poet chooses a particular moment in Virgil’s Aeneid as an image for translation. What is it about this conversation between Aeneas and his dead father, Anchises, at the banks of the Lethe which makes it uniquely fitting for Heaney to explore translation? In order to fully understand Heaney’s decision to translate this scene from Aeneid 6, it must be clear how Heaney perceives the classical tropes of katabasis (descent into the underworld) and nekyia (communion with the dead). Due to the particularly violent and destructive history of the 20th century from the World Wars to the Holocaust, contemporary poets tend to portray katabasis and nekyia in their works as tragic (See Falconer’s Hell in Contemporary Literature). Heaney subverts this view of a tragic descent and communion with the dead in his poetry, instead opting for a journey through Hell which is more optimistic and efficacious. Heaney’s rejection of the contemporary tragic katabasis and nekyia allows these classical tropes to become a metaphor for translation. I argue Heaney demonstrates how he views translation and the role of the translator through this metatranslational instance in “The Riverbank Field.” For Heaney, not only can a poet descend to the underworld where spirits of the literary dead wait for translation into a new medium, but the translator actually can succeed in bringing an ancient author to a modern readership. It’s been lost as a living myth. But its place in Western culture has been taken by general awareness of classical myths. —Seamus Heaney, Stepping Stones 295 When asked about how the classics have influenced his poetry, Seamus Heaney responded, “I just happened to belong to the last generation that learned Latin, that read Virgil, that knew about the descent into the underworld” (Stepping Stones 295). Now that a classical education in Greek and Latin is extremely rare, it is interesting to note the interest of late 20th and early 21st century poets in the Greek and Roman tradition. Like Heaney, many of the greatest poets of the past half-century made the literature of ancient Greece and Rome central to their own works.1 Some critics have remarked on this seeming paradox of a flourishing classical poetry during a simultaneous decline in classical education.2 This relationship with the classics has introduced into English poetry a variety of interpretations of the classical topoi katabasis and nekyia. Katabasis, or the descent into the underworld, is a common method used by epicists and mock epicists3 and frequently coupled with nekyia, an augury through conversation with the dead. Each hero descends to meet a particular ghost in the underworld in order to understand the hero’s purpose and future destiny. For Odysseus, the hero must descend to speak with Teiresias in order to learn how to return to Ithaca. In his nekyia, Odysseus speaks with the blind prophet’s spirit and then he is freed to speak with his deceased mother, Antecleia, whom Odysseus last saw alive. Alexander Pope will satirize this technique in Rape of the Lock. van Dyk 2 then meets other great men and women in Greek mythology in another common epic trope, the parade of heroes. While conversing with these dead heroes, Odysseus apparently exhausts the time he is allotted as a mortal in hell. He is attacked by the other shades of the underworld and narrowly escapes back to his ship. Virgil takes this Homeric katabasis and uses it slightly differently to discuss to glory of Rome. Aeneas descends not to speak with Teiresias but instead with his father, Anchises, who dies on the Trojan refugees’ journey to Italy. Once he reunites with Anchises, for his own nekyia, Aeneas is favored with a future vision of how Rome is eventually founded in Virgil’s version of the parade of heroes. Dante borrows from Virgil’s underworld and expands it, using katabasis and nekyia to comment on contemporary and literary heroes and villains but he then devotes a significant portion of his work to anabasis, or the ascent after descending to the

In Greek and Macedonian society, pederasty was the 16 norm, and boys and men did not have relations with others of the same age because 17 there was almost always a financial and power difference. Hephaestion was taller and 18 more handsome than Alexander, so it might have appeared that he held the power in 19 their relationship. The hypothesis put forward here suggests that writers have erased 20 the sexual partnership between Alexander and Hephaestion because their relationship 21 did not fit the norm of acceptable pederasty as practiced in Greek and Macedonian 22 culture or was no longer socially acceptable in the Roman contexts of the ancient 23 historians. Ancient biographers may have conducted censorship to conceal any 24 implication of femininity or submissiveness in this relationship.

    “I had not thought death had undone so many”: Katabasis in Eliot’s The Waste Land Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in English in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Noah Mastruserio The Ohio State University May 2018 Project Advisor: Professor Sebastian Knowles, Department of English 1 Introduction Of the many works referenced in Eliot’s The Waste Land, Dante’s Divine Comedy holds the most prominent position. Eliot’s dedication to Pound on the title page alludes to a line from Purgatorio, and Dante makes an appearance in every section of the poem, either by direct quote or veiled allusion. Such an association brings Dante’s journey through the Underworld to the forefront of the mind when reading The Waste Land, and provides one of the easiest avenues toward unpacking the poem’s density. But I propose that the poem’s exploration of the Underworld extends beyond a kinship to Dante and toward a deeper structural and thematic debt to the narrative of the katabasis, the descent into the Underworld. I suggest that the five parts of The Waste Land can be united via a traditional katabasis narrative, a narrative of metamorphosis and self-refinement. The katabasis is only one of the many classical and mythological structures Eliot employs throughout the poem. Already thoroughly explored in criticism are his use of the Grail legend1 and the burial and rebirth of a dying god figure. Less so is the appearance of the katabasis in the poem. The poem’s debt to Dante is obvious, but the presence of katabasis extends beyond Eliot quoting pieces of Inferno.

    Going Through Hell; ΤΑΡΤΑΡΟΣ in Greco-Roman Culture, Second Temple Judaism, and Philo of Alexandria* Clint Burnett (Boston College) Tis article questions the longstanding supposition that the eschatology of the Second Temple period was solely infuenced by Persian or Iranian eschatology, arguing instead that the litera- ture of this period refects awareness of several key Greco-Roman mythological concepts. In particular, the concepts of Tartarus and the Greek myths of Titans and Giants underlie much of the treatment of eschatology in the Jewish literature of the period. A thorough treatment of Tartarus and related concepts in literary and non-literary sources from ancient Greek and Greco-Roman culture provides a backdrop for a discussion of these themes in the Second Tem- ple period and especially in the writings of Philo of Alexandria. I. Introduction Contemporary scholarship routinely explores connections between Greco- Roman culture and Second Temple Judaism, but one aspect of this investiga- tion that has not received the attention it deserves is eschatology. Te view that the eschatology of the Second Temple period was shaped largely by Persian es- chatology remains dominant in the feld.1 As James Barr has observed, “Many of the scholars of the ‘biblical theology’ period, were very anxious to make it clear that biblical thought was entirely distinct from, and owed nothing to, Greek thought. … Iranian infuence, however, seemed … less of a threat.”2 Tis is somewhat surprising, given that many Second Temple Jewish texts, including the writings of Philo of Alexandria, mention eschatological con- cepts developed in a Greco-Roman context. Signifcant among these are the many references to the Greco-Roman subterranean prison of Tartarus and the related mythology of the Titans and Giants.

This assumption, however, is incorrect. In Dantes poem, as well as in the classical myths concerning the afterlife, we find that the connection between the two is, on the contrary, one of cause and effect. It is not by coincidence that the episode in question (lines 91-129) contains two instances of forgetfulness, namely, of having sinned and of Mateldas previous explanation of the function of the two rivers.

Travel as Hell: Exploring the Katabatic Structure of Travel Fiction Warwick Frost and Jennifer Laing Introduction Literature contributes to and influences our imaginings of travel, both in a positive and negative sense. Many novels depict travel in terms of ‘hell,’ depicting journeys that are exhausting, dangerous, and nightmarish. This narrative can be explored using the concept of the katabasis. Drawn from Ancient Greek mythology, it literally means ‘the descent,’ and more generally a journey to hell and back. 1 The underworld is a ‘realm of death,’ where sacrifices are often demanded and the ‘other’ is encountered. 2 Where the traveller returns, they are usually irrevocably changed by the experience. Erling Holtsmark observes that the central motif of these sojourns is identity: “The journey is in some central, irreducible way a journey of self-discovery, a quest for a lost self.”3 Through suffering, the traveller learns what they are capable of and understands themselves more deeply. The reader also absorbs the lesson that while travel is not necessarily straight-forward or enjoyable, the difficult passages and twists are intrinsically rewarding and enlightening. The mythic concept of the katabasis has been applied more broadly to cover fictional journeys drawn from many cultures and across different forms of 4 media, including books and film. Race Dr. Owen Goslin Dr. Werner Riess Abstract Hans Jorgen Hansen: Devising Descent: Mime, Katabasis and Ritual in Theocritus’ Idyll 15 (Under the direction of Dr. William H. Race) In this thesis I investigate the genres and structure of Theocritus’ fifteenth Idyll, as well as its katabatic and ritual themes. Though often considered an urban mime, only the first 43 lines exhibit the formal qualities of mime found in Herodas’ Mimiambi, the only other surviving corpus of Hellenistic mime. The counterpoint to the mimic first section is the Adonia that makes up the last section of the poem and amounts to an urban recasting of pastoral poetry. A polyphonic, katabatic journey bridges the mimic and pastoral sections and is composed of four encounters that correspond to ordeals found in ritual katabases. The structure of the poem is then tripartite, beginning in the profane world of the household mime, progressing through the liminal space of the streets and ending in the sacred world of the Adonia. "Either a Daimon, or a Hero, or Perhaps a God:" Mythical Residents of Subterranean Chambers In his list of seers who uttered gods' orders and messages to mortals not only when alive, but also after their death, Strabo1 mentions "...Amphiaraos, Trophonios, Orpheus, Musaios, and the god of the Getae, formerly Zalmoxis, a Pythagorean, who is in our time Dekaineos, the diviner of Byrebistas... ,,2 Aristides groups together Trophonios, Amphiaraos, Amphilochos and the Asclepiads.3 Celsus includes Zalmoxis, Mopsos, Amphilochos, Amphiaraos, and Trophonios in his register of mortals who died and were nevertheless worshiped, whieh makes Origen wonder, "whether one of these is either a daimon, or a hero, or perhaps a god, more active than mortals" (ft ècr'tt nç èv 'toîç 'tOtQU'tOlÇ Eï'tE 8atllcov Eï'tE llPcoÇ Eï'tE Kat 8E6ç, èVEPYéOv 't!Va lldÇova ft Ka'teX av8pco1tov;).4 The bewilderment of Origen 'is reasonable, given the elusiveness of these figures.

But it comes from the Latin cura, which simply means care. The body cares for itself, repairs itself, during sleep. I had to learn to care for a body that failed to make space for its own repair. When INTRODUCTION I couldn’t sleep, reading held a place open for me. I mostly lived there. During the day, I was less awake, and at night I was rapt in words, wrapped in a blanket of books. This essay is a record of that reading, of that care. here are secrets inside sleep. Each night we Tmeet them, but at daybreak they revert to secrets once again. The insomniac knows she is missing something other than sleep, but she can’t know what, exactly. I wrote this essay during a recent bout of insomnia that lasted a little over six months.
