Some of our Senior Art girls As part of our termly Senior School LO Day, our Grade participated in a mixed media workshop: 10s attended fascinating Relationship Workshops, run by Inspirational Art with Paul Senyol. Our Preparatory Netball and Hockey girls loved taking part in the Primary Winter Sports Festival.

Our U13A hockey girls played exceptionally well, winning gold at the Kenridge U13 tournament. They played Somerset House in the finals. After the game ended in a draw, it went to show downs and then sudden death, where our girls held their nerve, winning the tournament.

learning to make a difference 10 11 The atmosphere on campus was electric for the annual Herschfield Derby, which took place on Friday, 4 August. Our netball and hockey girls made us #proudlypink as they dominated on the court and the astro. A big thanks to all who came out and supported our girls, carrying them to victory.

Ha¯nim Abrahams (Grade 9) participated in the Commonwealth Youth Games held in the Bahamas from the 19 - 22 July 2017. SASCOC announced that Ha¯nim would be the flag bearer for the SA team at a ceremony prior to their departure, a truly proud moment for Ha¯nim. At the games, Ha¯nim won gold in the 100m breaststroke event with a new age group SA record! She also won bronze in the 200m breaststroke, and a credible fourth in the 50m breaststroke event.

Olivia Nel (Grade 9 ) (left) and Ha¯nim Abrahams (Grade 9) (right) recently participated in the FINA World Junior Championships held in Indianapolis, USA. This event showcases the best junior swimmers aged 14 – 17 for girls and 15 – 18 for boys.

Our U12 and U13 Netball teams fought hard at the recently held PGSGU Interschools Netball tournament. There were some very tight matches and some great wins. Well done to the players and coaches on an exciting afternoon of netball.

In squash news, Reese Bain (Grade 11) [far left] played for Western Province in the Jarvis Cup. Jarvis is the senior version of the Schools’ Inter-Provincial Tournament. On Saturday, 5 August, Sabriyyah Ebrahim (Grade 11) (far left) and Haadiyah Ebrahim (Grade 8) (left) participated in the KSI karate regional tournament. Sabriyyah came first and won gold for Kumite (fighting) in the under 21 division. Haadiyah came second and won a silver medal for Kumite (fighting) in the 16 – 17 youth division and came third for Kata, winning a bronze medal. The girls will be competing in nationals next month in order to qualify for the South African karate team competing in Sweden next year.

Emily has been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship (she is the first Herschel “Bishops” Rhodes Scholar) to further her studies at Oxford University in England… an amazing achievement and such an inspiration to our girls. We also welcomed 2013 Head Girl Lethu Ntshinga back to the school. The Grade 8 - 11s were privileged to hear Lethu speak recently at Matric Assembly. Lethu is currently studying at Harvard and spoke about her experiences since leaving Herschel. The impact of her talk was reflected in the number of girls staying to speak to her afterwards.
