n Wednesday 2 November 2016 the Maltese Community Council of Victoria held its Annual O General Meeting for 2016 at the Maltese Centre in Parkville. Representatives from several affiliated associations attended the meeting. In his address, MCCV President Victor Borg outlined the achievements of the Council during the year. He said that it has been a very difficult year for the Council in the sense that there were a number of things that needed attention in terms of updating operational policies and procedures to comply with more stringent Government requirements. SBS Radio has launched a public consultation on the language selection criteria it is proposing for an SBS Radio Services Review. The Maltese Community Council of Victoria organised the Maltese Cultural Festival 2016 consisting of several events that were held in Melbourne during September. The Festival started with the celebration of the Feast of Maria Bambina on 8th September and concluded on Sunday 25th September with a lunchtime restaurant at the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville.

The event was organized by community group nisġa and held on Sunday 23 October 2016 at the Angliss Restaurant in Melbourne. The Maltese Cook Off has been a vehicle for celebrating and raising awareness of Maltese culture and food in Australia. This annual event brought together 8 teams made up of 3 people, in some cases 3 generations from one family, cooking Maltese traditional food. This year’s judging panel consisted of the Maltese Consul General in Victoria Victor Grech, former MasterChef Australia contestant Tregan Spiteri, The Winners former MKR contestant Carla Mangion and Doris Delia. The 250 guests were entertained by renowned musician Nicky Bomba and members of Bustamento while Nicol Caruana belted out a few Maltese favourites. People’s Choice Award went to The Awesome Altairs with a menu consisting of baked rice and imqaret (date slices) with orange blossom syrup and vanilla ice cream who also tied for 3rd/2nd places with Conservative Kunservas, who had a menu consisting of rabbit and Maltese sausage lasagna and a Kinnie and chocolate cake. The Association’s President Mr George Saliba OAM thanked those present for their attendance. Mr Saliba reported that the Association had another successful year and credit is due, firstly, to the hard- working committee and, secondly, the never-ending support of the members. As the Association runs a Senior’s group committee, the President put forward a proposition to the members that the time has come for the two committees to amalgamate into one in order to facilitate a more unified and cohesive membership and better serve the members of both groups. No decision was taken on this proposal at the meeting. Discussions are still ongoing. Lunch was provided at the meeting.
