Epping to Thornleigh Third Track Environmental Impact Statement 14. Surface and groundwater This chapter considers the potential impacts of the ETTT proposal on surface and groundwater including water quality. 14.1 Existing conditions 14.1.1 Surface water and drainage The proposal site is located predominantly within the upstream areas of the Byles and Zig Zag Creek catchments, and downstream of the Upper Devlins Creek catchment. Surface waterways within the vicinity of the proposal site include Devlins Creek, Byles Creek, Zig Zag Creek and a number of smaller unnamed overland flow paths. These creeks are shown on Figure 14.1 except Zig Zag Creek which is located just to the north of the figure extent. The external catchments between Epping Station and Pennant Hills Road generally drain from the western side of the corridor to the eastern side, towards Devlins Creek and Byles Creek. These creeks discharge to the Lane Cove River. North of Pennant Hills Station, the catchment falls from the eastern to the western side towards Zig Zag Creek, which discharges into Berowra Creek. The ETTT proposal would pass through undulating terrain, with Devlins Creek the only major watercourse crossing the corridor. Flooding of the creek is unlikely to impact the existing rail corridor, as the creek is located more than 20 metres below the corridor level. No works are proposed in Devlins Creek. There are currently 19 drainage culverts which convey surface water across the railway corridor. Due to the construction of the third track, 14 of these culverts would be required to be extended. 14.1.2 Surface water quality Water quality monitoring is undertaken at a number of locations within the Hornsby LGA, and the results are provided in Council’s Annual Water Quality Report. -

Macquarie Park to Thornleigh
Macquarie Park to Thornleigh 4 hrs 30 mins Hard track 4 11.5 km One way 413m Starting from the Macquarie Park train station, you wander down Lane Cove Rd and over De Burghs Bridge to join the main spine of the Great North Walk in the Lane Cove Valley. Here the walk heads under De Burghs bridge then explores the dry grass tree and eucalypt forest along the side of the ridge. The track soon leads you down into the ferny and moist valley beside Lane Cove River. Near the top of the valley, you walk up some stone steps built during the depression to find some rock engravings with 1930's style political satire, Conscript Pass. 7.7. Aboriginal Heritage 7.8. Hydrology and Water Quality
Strathfield to Hornsby Power Supply Upgrade Review of Environmental Factors 7.7. Aboriginal heritage 7.7.1. Existing Environment A search of the Aboriginal Heritage Information Management System (AHIMS) was undertaken on 14 April 2014 for each of the power room and padmount substation locations and for the aerial works from Devlins Creek to Hornsby. A buffer of 200 metres was used and six items were identified within proximity to the Proposal area. One item is located within the rail corridor at Cheltenham. 7.7.2. Potential impacts An item at Cheltenham is located within the rail corridor where ETTT works are currently being undertaken. This item has been destroyed by ETTT works and is no longer within the rail corridor at this location. The Proposal therefore would not impact on this item. The other five items would not be impacted by the Proposal. The study area and rail corridor has been substantially modified by urban development and associated surface disturbance in addition to the rail infrastructure. The risk therefore of encountering any unknown Aboriginal heritage items is considered to be low. 7.7.3. Mitigation measures To manage the potential of encountering unknown aboriginal heritage items, the following mitigation measure would be implemented to minimise impacts during construction: Should Aboriginal heritage items be uncovered all work in the vicinity would cease and the Project Manager and TfNSW staff would be notified immediately. OEH would be notified in accordance with the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1979 . The local Aboriginal Land Council would be notified and an assessment by an archaeologist would be arranged to determine the significance of the objects and any other requirements before work resumes. -
Gordon to Hornsby (Overnight at Scout Camp)
Gordon to Hornsby (overnight at Scout camp) 2 Days Hard track 4 25.8 km One way 1025m This overnight walk starts from Gordon train station and winds through bush filled valleys to Hornsby station. From Gordon station, the walk winds down past the Gordon golf course to the Great North Walk, then continues north through the Lane Cove Valley before staying overnight at the Baden Powell scout camp. The next day, the walk continues along the Great North Walk, through Thornleigh and down into the Berowra Valley Regional Park, following Berowra creek to the beautiful Fishponds waterhole.
