Sci.Int.(Lahore),29(4),851-859, 2017 ISSN 1013-5316;CODEN: SINTE 8 851 SIGNIFICANT DILAPIDATED HAVELIES (RESIDENTIAL PLACES) IN PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN Samina Saleem Taxila Institute of Asian Civilizations Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad Present address: Government Degree College for Women, Muslim Town Rawalpindi, Pakistan [email protected] ABSTRACT:: This research is mainly based on the documentation of enormous havelies in Peshawar, which are not documented. It was noticed during the survey that the area of Qissa Khwani bazaar in Peshawar is overwhelmingly filled with enormous Havelies and buildings. It seems that constructing massive residential places was a tradition of Peshawar city, because Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs who were financially well-off always liked to spend generously on their residential places. Havelies are such living places, which are called havelies either for their enormous size or for some other significancefor being used as social, cultural, religious and business place. Unfortunately the buildings are in a dilapidated state due to the negligence of the authorities and the residents. The main focus of the research is on the residential places of the iconic stars of Indian Films who used to reside in these havelies before Independence of Pakistan. The famous havelies that will be discussed are Raj Kapoor haveli, Dilip Kumar haveli, Shah Rukh Khan Haveli and some important features of havelies of Sethi family. This research is significant because these havelies have never been documented and even now no efforts are being done to protect or restore them. The woodwork in the buildings, which is very intricate especially doors and windows and the architectural style used in these Havelies, which is a combination of Hindu and Mughal building style and sometimes Central Asian influences can also be seen due to the strategic situation of Peshawar.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. The expression "Bollywood" is frequently utilized by non-Indians as a synecdoche to allude to the entire of Indian film; be that as it may, Bollywood legitimate is just a piece of the bigger Indian film industry, which incorporates other creation communities delivering films in numerous other Indian dialects.

Recently, however, Indian directors have begun looking toward Hollywood for an abundance of storylines to reform for Bollywood consumers. In most cases the original Hollywood plotline is indiscernible amidst the Bollywood panacea of singing and dancing and Indian religious references are often inserted to validate and legitimate characterizations, situations and bring an Indian cultural atmosphere that Bollywood audiences require. This paper examines the translation of several Hollywood hits into Bollywood blockbusters and explores why religion is an integral trope utilized in making sensitive plotlines derived from an American culture palpable to an Indian audience. The founding fathers in 1947, Nehru Jinnah had failed in its policy making for designing of constitutional rights for Pashtuns. Baccha Khan or Baadshah Khan or Abdul Gaffar Khan was a Pashtun Independence Activist who worked to end the rule of the British Raj in colonial Bharat . A close friend of Mahatma Gandhi, Bacha Khan was nicknamed Sarhadi Gandhi ("Frontier Gandhi"). who never wanted to be a part of Pakistan territory during Partition. Though born and bred in a region infamous for its warring tribes and history of blood feuds— Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP or modern-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), that borders with Afghanistan—Khan was a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his principle of non-violence. This love for ahimsa (non-violence has strongly opposed the partition of Bharat, while many Pashtuns were willing to work with Indian politicians, many other Pashtuns were sympathetic to the idea of a separate homeland for Indian Muslims following the departure of the British. Accused as being anti-Muslim, Khan was physically assaulted in 1946, leading to his hospitalization in Peshawar.
