Acknowledgements Around the time that I officially started writing this dissertation, students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi – India organized in opposition to the Hindu Right’s diabolical politics defeating the nation’s hope for a secular polity. Among these students, Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid assumed prominent roles, primarily because they were arrested with a few others on charges of sedition…in a democratic republic. I was drawn to the emerging youth movement, and the politics of Kumar and Khalid because they were Ph.D. Candidates like me. But our respective approaches to politics were significantly different. They were arrested, beaten, and publicly vilified on national media while I was couched in the comforts of academic life in United States. Khalid, in particular, escaped an assassination attempt while I witnessed western academics laying on the floor in a hotel ballroom as a cutesy performance of “putting bodies on the line and words into action.” I would like to say I was (and am) in solidarity with Khalid and Kumar but the risks were (and are) never the same. However, I learned immensely from these two men – my peers. They forced me to rethink the way I characterized past governments with every critique they leveled against the present Government. They illuminated with actions and words how to convert theory into a praxis for everyday life. They encouraged me to look at the continuities, intersections, and resistances to domination. They motivated me to think with belligerence as well as humor. They helped me refuse being reduced to my immediate identity. I am indebted to Kumar and Khalid for all that they taught me over the past few years. inquilab zindabad. There are several people at the University of South Florida who contributed in many ways to the completion of this dissertation. But I want to acknowledge those who contributed in the “non-academic” ways. Mikki, Paige, Danielle, April, and Tamar at the Department of Communication who ensured I submitted all my documents on time, remained in compliance, received stipends in full, and attended to every other logistical detail that afforded me the peace of mind to focus on my work. I, additionally, acknowledge those who work at USF Libraries – I do not know anyone’s names, I do not know anyone’s faces, nada. However, I owe them a big thank you for delivering every article, book, book chapter, and random resources I requested. I also acknowledge the thankless labor of the janitorial staff who are dressed in a manner that they merge with the background – to never be seen. You all work the odd hours – again, to never be seen – so that my knowledge production is not disturbed. I appreciate the clean offices, empty trashcans, usable washrooms, and vacuumed carpets. It was noticed during the survey that the area of Qissa Khwani bazaar in Peshawar is overwhelmingly filled with enormous Havelies and buildings. It seems that constructing massive residential places was a tradition of Peshawar city, because Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs who were financially well-off always liked to spend generously on their residential places. Havelies are such living places, which are called havelies either for their enormous size or for some other significancefor being used as social, cultural, religious and business place. Unfortunately the buildings are in a dilapidated state due to the negligence of the authorities and the residents. The main focus of the research is on the residential places of the iconic stars of Indian Films who used to reside in these havelies before Independence of Pakistan. The famous havelies that will be discussed are Raj Kapoor haveli, Dilip Kumar haveli, Shah Rukh Khan Haveli and some important features of havelies of Sethi family. This research is significant because these havelies have never been documented and even now no efforts are being done to protect or restore them. The woodwork in the buildings, which is very intricate especially doors and windows and the architectural style used in these Havelies, which is a combination of Hindu and Mughal building style and sometimes Central Asian influences can also be seen due to the strategic situation of Peshawar.

    FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses.
