The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

  • Bollywood Lens Syllabus
Bollywood's Lens on Indian Society Professor Anita Weiss INTL 448/548, Spring 2018 [email protected] Mondays, 4-7:20 pm 307 PLC; 541 346-3245 Course Syllabus Film has the ability to project powerful images of a society in ways conventional academic mediums cannot. This is particularly true in learning about India, which is home to the largest film industries in the world. This course explores images of Indian society that emerge through the medium of film. Our attention will be focused on the ways in which Indian society and history is depicted in film, critical social issues being explored through film; the depicted reality vs. the historical reality; and the powerful role of the Indian film industry in affecting social orientations and values. Course Objectives: 1. To gain an awareness of the historical background of the subcontinent and of contemporary Indian society; 2. To understand the sociocultural similarities yet significant diversity within this culture area; 3. To learn about the political and economic realities and challenges facing contemporary India and the rapid social changes the country is experiencing; 4. To learn about the Indian film industry, the largest in the world, and specifically Bollywood. Class format Professor Weiss will open each class with a short lecture on the issues which are raised in the film to be screened for that day. We will then view the selected film, followed by a short break, and then extensive in- class discussion. Given the length of most Bollywood films, we will need to fast-forward through much of the song/dance and/or fighting sequences.

  • Cosmopolitanism, Remediation and the Ghost World of Bollywood
COSMOPOLITANISM, REMEDIATION, AND THE GHOST WORLD OF BOLLYWOOD DAVID NOVAK CUniversity ofA California, Santa Barbara Over the past two decades, there has been unprecedented interest in Asian popular media in the United States. Regionally identified productions such as Japanese anime, Hong Kong action movies, and Bollywood film have developed substantial nondiasporic fan bases in North America and Europe. This transnational consumption has passed largely under the radar of culturalist interpretations, to be described as an ephemeral by-product of media circulation and its eclectic overproduction of images and signifiers. But culture is produced anew in these “foreign takes” on popular media, in which acts of cultural borrowing channel emergent forms of cosmopolitan subjectivity. Bollywood’s global circulations have been especially complex and surprising in reaching beyond South Asian diasporas to connect with audiences throughout the world. But unlike markets in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, the growing North American reception of Bollywood is not necessarily based on the films themselves but on excerpts from classic Bollywood films, especially song-and- dance sequences. The music is redistributed on Western-produced compilations andsampledonDJremixCDssuchasBollywood Beats, Bollywood Breaks, and Bollywood Funk; costumes and choreography are parodied on mainstream television programs; “Bollywood dancing” is all over YouTube and classes are offered both in India and the United States.1 In this essay, I trace the circulation of Jaan Pehechaan Ho, a song-and-dance sequence from the 1965 Raja Nawathe film Gumnaam that has been widely recircu- lated in an “alternative” nondiasporic reception in the United States. I begin with CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Vol. 25, Issue 1, pp.

  • UX and Agile: a Bollywood Blockbuster Masala
UX and Agile: A Bollywood blockbuster masala Pradeep Joseph UXD Manager Juniper Networks Bangalore What is Bollywood? Wikipedia says: The name "Bollywood" is derived from Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. However, unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not exist as a physical place. Bollywood films are mostly musicals, and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. Indian audiences expect full value for their money. Songs and dances, love triangles, comedy and dare-devil thrills are all mixed up in a three-hour- long extravaganza with an intermission. Such movies are called masala films, after the Hindi word for a spice mixture. Like masalas, these movies are a mixture of many things such as action, comedy, romance and so on. Melodrama and romance are common ingredients to Bollywood films. They frequently employ formulaic ingredients such as star-crossed lovers and angry parents, love triangles, family ties, sacrifice, corrupt politicians, kidnappers, conniving villains, courtesans with hearts of gold, long-lost relatives and siblings separated by fate, dramatic reversals of fortune, and convenient coincidences. What has UX and Agile got to do with Bollywood? As a Designer I faced tremendous challenges while moving into an Agile environment. While drowning the sorrows with designers from other organizations I came to realize that they too face similar challenges. This inspired me to explore further into what makes designers sad, what makes them suck and what are the ways in which they can contribute more in an Agile environment.

Sci.Int.(Lahore),29(4),851-859, 2017 ISSN 1013-5316;CODEN: SINTE 8 851 SIGNIFICANT DILAPIDATED HAVELIES (RESIDENTIAL PLACES) IN PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN Samina Saleem Taxila Institute of Asian Civilizations Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad Present address: Government Degree College for Women, Muslim Town Rawalpindi, Pakistan [email protected] ABSTRACT:: This research is mainly based on the documentation of enormous havelies in Peshawar, which are not documented. It was noticed during the survey that the area of Qissa Khwani bazaar in Peshawar is overwhelmingly filled with enormous Havelies and buildings. It seems that constructing massive residential places was a tradition of Peshawar city, because Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs who were financially well-off always liked to spend generously on their residential places. Havelies are such living places, which are called havelies either for their enormous size or for some other significancefor being used as social, cultural, religious and business place. Unfortunately the buildings are in a dilapidated state due to the negligence of the authorities and the residents. The main focus of the research is on the residential places of the iconic stars of Indian Films who used to reside in these havelies before Independence of Pakistan. The famous havelies that will be discussed are Raj Kapoor haveli, Dilip Kumar haveli, Shah Rukh Khan Haveli and some important features of havelies of Sethi family. This research is significant because these havelies have never been documented and even now no efforts are being done to protect or restore them. The woodwork in the buildings, which is very intricate especially doors and windows and the architectural style used in these Havelies, which is a combination of Hindu and Mughal building style and sometimes Central Asian influences can also be seen due to the strategic situation of Peshawar.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. Samurai Champloo: Transnational Viewing Jiwon Ahn From the original edition of How to Watch Television published in 2013 by New York University Press Edited by Ethan Thompson and Jason Mittell Accessed at nyupress.org/9781479898817 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND). 39 Samurai Champloo Transnational Viewing Jiwon Ahn Abstract: Television criticism usually addresses “what” TV is watched, and ofen “who” watches, but “where” TV is watched is less commonly considered vital to understanding it. In this look at the anime program Samurai Champloo, Jiwon Ahn argues for the importance of “where” to the meanings and pleasures of texts which—like anime—circulate in television’s global fows. Watching an imported or translated text on television is an increasingly ordinary experience in the current state of globalization. But what unique critical questions should we consider in order to make sense of such viewings? To understand our de- sire for and pleasure in viewing imported television texts, we need to consider how texts produced for overseas distribution are designed diferently for international audiences, and how this design may infect (or not) our viewing of them. Anime ofers a productive example in that the format’s long history of international circula- tion inevitably involved the development of textual strategies suited to transnational consumption, including, notably, an efort to balance exoticism with familiarity in terms of appeal. While the popularity of shows such as Dragon Ball Z (Cartoon Net- work, 1998–2005), Ranma ½ (Fuji Television, 1989–1992), and InuYasha (Cartoon Network, 2000–2004) on U.S.

  • Shankar Jaikishan – Emperors of Music by Ashwini Kumar Rath
Shankar Jaikishan – Emperors of Music By Ashwini Kumar Rath Shankar Jaikishan music, synonym of Indian Film music, has far reaching impact in India and outside. The duo moulded music and musical mood of masses since 1949, and are still considered to be the best music composers from India. The duo also contributed outside movie industry with their much celebrated album Raga in Jazz Style, and background music for documentary Everest expedition among many others. If we look at the popular impact by any personalities in the field of music during the post-independence period in India, the obvious choice is Shankar Jaikishan. Shankar, the more versatile of the two, was a prolific musician with mastery over dozens of instruments, Indian classical music and dance forms. He was primarily responsible for building Shankar Jaikishan team with dedicated lyricists, music assistants, and jumbo-sized 60-pieces orchestra, and was the lead composer. On the other hand, Jaikishan was incredibly creative and legendary composer himself. He was genius of background music and romantic tunes though he too could compose songs in other genres. While Shankar's musical jhankar propels divine dwellers to zoom in unison with ecstasy, romantic effervescence of Jaikishan music brings divine feelings on to earth. During initial years, all decisions about musical engagements were made by Shankar; but both started taking up assignments separately in the late sixties. They had sharp contrasts in personalities and physical appearances. Shankar was gym-savvy, non- drinker, and was a strict disciplinarian. On the other hand, Jaikishan was party-man and was very social.

  • Celluloid Anthropology
CELLULOID ANTHROPOLOGY Film, after all, is more than mere Uncle Ike and my father, Jacob celluloid. It is socially constructed within a three-cornered association between filmmakers, film spectators, and the film texts themselves, and at every point in that nexus of relationships we encounter negotiation and interaction involving active social beings and institutionalized social practices.--Andrew Tudor, “Sociology and Film” As a bit of tea-soaked madeleine summoned Marcel’s memories of holidays in Combray, the aroma of sandalwood soap, simply cooked lentils, and hot sweet milk with a cream skin call up the general sensation of one period I spent in India. Sparing my kind father from her hormonal vicissitudes, my pregnant and homesick mother left Chicago for the duration of her pregnancy and took me along to her maternal house. There she was properly pampered and I was entertained by a merry cast of characters from a world to which I belonged, all of us in giddy anticipation of my sister’s birth. Like those “sonorous, fragrant, limpid hours” Proust’s protagonist spent in the country, the time I spent as an only child suddenly plunged into a warm extended family continues to affect and color my life. I cling to the sense of security, contentment, and connection I sensed in what was, for six months, my world instead of the one I so lightly inhabit. So shocked I was by our return to America that when I saw my own sweet father I blinked at him frankly and said, “I’m shy of you.” The people of that faraway land were very different from the quiet wintry Chicago to which we returned, and if I was borne of that world then I was forever very different too.
