    Stephen Parkinson Amid the glory of London 2012, the successes of two Olympic medallists-turned-Tory MPs are well known. Seb Coe, mastermind of the 2012 Games, won gold for the 1,500 metres and silver for the 800 metres at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and repeated the feat four years later in Los Angeles; Colin Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympic Association, won silver for rowing as the cox of the men’s eights in Moscow 1980. Both sit on the Tory benches in the House of Lords, having previously been MPs: Moynihan in Lewisham East (1983–92) and Coe in Falmouth & Camborne (1992–7). But how many other Conservative politicians have represented Britain at the Olympics? Rather a lot, as it happens – including some who did so at the same time as they were in the House of Commons. The UK’s first Olympic champion was a politician, but neither a British nor Conservative one. The Irish Nationalist John Pius Boland, who sat for South Kerry from 1900 to 1918, won the country’s first two medals at the first Olympiad of the modern era, the 1896 Games in Athens. It seems to have been done on a whim: as an undergraduate at Oxford two years earlier, Boland had heard a Greek student at Balliol, Konstantinos Manos, speaking at the Oxford Union about the modern revival of the Olympics, in which he was involved. The two became friends and Boland ‘looked him up’ a couple of years later after heading to Athens to see the Games.1 Boland was only supposed to be a spectator, but – with help from Manos – entered the lawn tennis tournament ‘on the spur of the moment’, playing in leather-soled shoes with ‘a tennis bat of sorts’ he picked up at a local bazaar.2 He won the men’s singles and, after the partner of the German he had beaten in that tournament dropped out of the doubles with an injury, Boland stepped into his place and won that too.3 Luckily for him, the Games ‘were held about Easter, and it was possible to be back at Oxford in time for my last summer term’.4 1 John Boland, Irishman’s Day: a day in the life of an Irish M.P.

This dissertation examines the response of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) as the official governing body of ‘international’ men’s cricket to developments related to decolonisation of the British Empire between 1947 and 1965. This was a period of intense political flux and paradigmatic shifts. This study draws on primary sources in the form of records of ICC and MCC meetings and newspaper archives, and a wide-ranging corpus of secondary sources on the history of cricket, history of the Commonwealth and transnational perspectives on history. It is the contention of this dissertation that these cricket archives have hitherto not been exploited as commentary on decolonisation or the Commonwealth. Due attention is given to familiarising the reader with the political backdrop in the Empire and Commonwealth against which the ICC is studied.

    Peaks And Valleys: The History Of Competitive Distance Running In The U.S. Since 1954 Ben Raphelson Grinnell College 1 Introduction I began to run seriously in the summer of 2000 before I entered high school. At the time, I had very little knowledge of the sport beyond my team and the teams we competed against in our conference and state. That fall, attending my first cross-country state meet, I watched Dathan Ritzenhein, a senior and defending high school national champion obliterate the field and win the 5-kilometer race by nearly a minute. 1 The summer of 2001 was my first track season and happened to coincide with Alan Webb breaking Jim Ryun’s high school mile record. These performances came early in my involvement with the sport, and perhaps as a result, I did not truly appreciate their significance. I may have been dimly aware of a disconnect between these stunning high school performances and the woeful state of professional distance running in the United States, but took little notice. As my interest in the sport grew with my involvement in it, I heard romanticized stories about amazing U.S. runners from the past, giants like Jim Ryun and Frank Shorter. Growing up, I was without any such role model on the world- stage. As my academic interests turned towards history at Grinnell College, and my running career continued, I inevitably sought to combine the two. In the fall of 2006, I began discussions of a summer project with my research and academic advisors at Grinnell. My goal, put simply, was to figure out what happened to elite distance running in the United States.
