A GEOLOGICAL WONDER OF TOWERING SANDSTONE MONOLITHS, MYSTERIOUS SLOT CANYONS AND HANGING GARDENS, ZION WILL HEIGHTEN THE SENSES AND REVIVE YOUR SPIRIT.

here are rare places on earth that neither words nor pictures Tcan capture. When you enter Zion National Park, you will experience a feeling that won’t quite fit inside your camera. Your eyes will search to take it all in, your voice will falter as you try to express the emotion, and the only place you’ll truly comprehend it is in your heart.

Zion National Park celebrated 100 years (1909-2009) since becoming Utah's first national park. Zion is known for striking contrasts found within its boundaries. There is almost nothing to compare it to. Immense red and white sandstone cliffs stretch from the forested river bed to the brilliant and breathtaking reaches of the sky. Look up. Tilt your head back. Let your eyes trace the landscape while your heart soars to new heights.

VisitStGeorge.com 51 HIDDEN GEMS A QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE FOR SOME OF ST. GEORGE'S AREA DISCOVERIES gems THAT ONLY THE LOCALS KNOW ABOUT

> Babylon Arch (1.5 miles round trip) St. George is not known for its sandstone arches, but that’s because most people haven’t seen Babylon Arch. It’s a fascinating day hike that takes you hidden through rugged red rock terrain and sandy trails. The arch can be tricky to spot because of its angle to the trail, which makes it appear as if it’s just another large boulder, so keep your eyes open. Beyond the arch is the Virgin River, a welcome respite on a warm day. This hike is NOT stroller friendly, but young kids can make the trek with help. Dogs are welcome. This one is definitely worth the 1.5 mile trip.

From St. George, take I-15 North to the Leeds/Silver Reef Exit. Continue on Main Street for 2 miles, and turn right onto 900 North Road. Continue for nearly 3 george miles to a sharp left that takes you to the trailhead. . > Snow Canyon Overlook (4.7 miles round trip) st Part of the Red Mountain Trail System, which connects at the same Dammeron Valley Trail head, Snow Canyon Overlook Trail is an easy hike with stunning views at the end. Although only 15 miles from downtown St. George, Dammeron BABYLON ARCH Valley gains you nearly 2,000 feet in elevation, offering a cooler climate than St. George itself. This trail is very rocky and sandy, without much variety in landscape along the way. During the first 0.75 mile or so, the trail is bordered by fences, but you’ll eventually cross a gate to continue the hike. The overlook is worth every step. You can see all the way through Snow Canyon, past St. George, and out to the Arizona Strip.

From St. George, continue 12 miles past Snow Canyon Parkway on SR 18. The trailhead turnoff is marked and on the left. > Yant Flat (2 miles round trip) This photographic wonder is a true hidden gem. Exploration is moderately difficult however, and quite time-consuming, due to cross-country walking, steep slopes and deep gullies. All the cliffs and the surrounding lands are publicly owned, and there are plenty of good camping places nearby. The stony plains of Yant Flat are home to a herd of wild horses.

From St. George, go north on I-15 approximately 13 miles to Exit 22, Leeds/Silver Reef. Turn left on Main Street and go north for around 1.5 miles. Take another left onto Silver Reef Road for 1.2 miles where it becomes a dirt road and continue for almost 2 miles. The road will fork and the sign says St. George left and Oak Grove right. Take the left to St. George, FR031. Follow this road for another 7 miles until you reach your destination on the left. > The Bowl, The Vortex (2.16 miles round trip)

The Bowl near Lower Sand Cove is a moderate 2.16 miles hike that features beautiful views, a lot of plant life and unique Navajo Sandstone. This well- traveled trail crosses lava flows, sandy walkways and red and white sandstone. The first bowl is an oasis with a tiny sandy beach and trees. Continue to the main bowl to see for miles in any direction with views of Pine and Square Top Mountain. This hike is not suitable for strollers or young families. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Watch your footing, as there are steep drop-offs.

From I-15, take Exit 6 onto Bluff Street and head north toward Pine Valley Mountain. Bluff Street turns into Hwy 18 as you head up the hill. Continue up the hill about 18 miles. As you pass through Dammeron Valley, look for a dirt road on the left that meets the highway diagonally. Turn left, and follow it for 5 miles past Upper Sand Cove Reservoir. You will pass what looks like an old abandoned building on the left. About a hundred yards past the building there is a left- hand turn off just before a ditch with running water. Pull in, park and enjoy your hike! 2.16 miles round trip > Petroglyphs • Anasazi Petroglyphs (3.5 miles round trip) This is a fairly easy hike, stroller passable and dog friendly. The trail starts off as lightly sloped switchbacks that lead to farmstead ruins, taking a right will loop back to the parking lot, or go left to find a wonderful example of well-preserved petroglyphs on a cliff above the Santa Clara River. There are also a couple of cliff dwellings to discover. Keep going past the petroglyphs to an overlook of the river valley below.

From I-15, Exit 6 to turn north on Bluff Street. Turn left on Sunset Blvd. Continue on Sunset Blvd. as it turns into Santa Clara Dr. Continue 3.2 miles past the Jacob Hamblin Home as Santa Clara Dr. turns into Highway 91. Turn left onto a gravel road and travel 0.3 miles to the Anasazi Valley Trailhead. • Little Black Mountain (1 mile round trip) After parking at the trailhead, you’ll find many sandstone boulders covered in ancient petroglyphs. The trail is a single track, one-mile loop inside a fenced area. It takes about an hour to complete the loop. Be sure to bring your sunscreen. This is a family-friendly hike and dogs are welcome.

From I-15, take Exit 4 and go east on Brigham Road. Turn right on River Road and travel about 4 miles to the Arizona Border (where the road turns to gravel) and then 0.5 miles to BLM Road 1069. Turn left at the Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site directional sign, and continue 5 miles.
