Travel behaviour trend has increased drastically all over the world. With the present reality of climate change, the transportation studies are becoming increasingly important, in regards of travel behaviour changes. It is important to understand the need to change travel behaviour as one of the initiative to achieve sustainable transportation. In achieving transportation sustainability, understanding on travel behaviour and need can be more functional and useful for transportation planners to encourage people to use public transportations. In recent years, Low Carbon Society (LCS) concept has taken place to change the people’s lifestyles, especially to increase the use of public transportations. Undeniably, the only solution to a more sustainable transportation leading to a low carbon society is through a higher adoption rate of public transportation. However, it is still far to achieve as far as transportation planners are concerned because of the lack of understanding of the social needs to complement with public transportations.

  • Water Quality Index for the Skudai River and Its Tributaries for Identifying the Problematic Areas for Better Watershed Management
WATER QUALITY INDEX FOR THE SKUDAI RIVER AND ITS TRIBUTARIES FOR IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEMATIC AREAS FOR BETTER WATERSHED MANAGEMENT I.B. Naubi 1, N.H. Zardari 1,*, S.M. Shirazi 1, M.T. Shazwin 1 1 Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai. Johor, MALAYSIA * Correspondence to: [email protected] (Noorul Hassan Zardari) It is very important to develop a rehabilitation plan for the watersheds that have been degraded because of increased development activities and high urbanization. Identifying the most vulnerable parts of a watershed is challenging and can be done if water quality in the river was determined in different sections from the upstream to the downstream of a watershed. In this study, we delineated the Skudai River watershed into 25 sub-watersheds using ArcGIS technique. Later, we identified tributaries in each sub-watershed. The sub- watersheds were grouped into three main categories, i.e. natural, semi-urban, and urban sub- watersheds depending on land use patterns. Water quality samples were collected at different tributaries from all three categories of sub-watersheds. The paper presents water quality analysis results. The Skudai River (natural part) was classified into natural sub-watershed as this sub-watershed was dominated with natural forest. The Senai and Kempas rivers were classified into sub-urban watersheds while Melana and Danga rivers were classified into urban watersheds. The water quality index (WQI) for the Skudai River (Natural) was 95.2 and falls in Class I category, i.e. clean. The Senai River had WQI of 84.5 and Class II category, i.e.

  • Traffic Noise Assessment at Residential Areas in Skudai, Johor

Vehicles passing by on roadways in residential areas may produce unpleasant traffic noise that affects the residents. This paper presents the traffic noise assessment of three selected residential areas located in Skudai, Johor. The objectives of this study are to evaluate traffic characteristics at selected residential areas, determine related noise indices, and assess impact of traffic noise. Traffic characteristics such as daily traffic volume and vehicle speed were evaluated using automatic traffic counter (ATC). Meanwhile, noise indices like equivalent continuous sound pressure level (LAeq), noise level exceeded 10% (L10) and 90% (L90) of measurement time were determined using sound level meter (SLM). Besides that, traffic noise index (TNI) and noise pollution level (LNP) were calculated based on the measured noise indices. The results showed an increase in noise level of 60 to 70 dBA maximum due to increase in traffic volume. There was also a significant change in noise level of more than 70 dBA even though average vehicle speed did not vary significantly. Nevertheless, LAeq, TNI, and LNP values for all sites during daytime were lower than the maximum recommended levels. Thus, residents in the three studied areas were not affected in terms of quality of life and health.
