2020 UC Irvine Baseball Game Notes This Date in Anteater History

The Anteaters were cruising, it was 13-2 in the 5th inning, March 6 nearly the entire lineup was bench players after most of the starters had collected a hit and a run. The 6th inning came and Cal State Dominguez Hills woke up with 7 runs with their starters still plugging away. Two more in the 7th and 5 in the 8th now put the Toros ahead, 16-15, and the Anteaters had no answer falling by that score 1985

The ‘Eaters made a clean sweep of Cal Tech shutting them out in a double- March 7 header with wins of 8-0 and 6-0. Dave Wollos stole the show in game one with a no-hitter as it took the program just 11 games into their existence to record its first no-no. Wollos struck out eight, and was done in by an error to start the sixth inning, lat- er erased on a double play, as all that was standing between him a perfect game. Probably more im- pressive is Wollos did not allow a ball to reach the outfield inducing 11 groundouts and 2 popouts in his 7-inning near-perfect game facing the minimum of 21 hitters. UCI didn’t allow a Cal Tech hit until the third inning of game two as Ben Wetzler, Bob Barlow, and Tom O’Con- 1970 ner combined to allow two hits and one walk to go with 10 strikeouts.

March 8 CSUDH led 1-0, and then UCI struck for 9 in the second. Three-run 4th and 5th innings and a 6-run 8th to cap it off gave UCI a 22-3 victory. 24 hits without a HR, Brian Young went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, 2 runs, and 4 RBIs, and a solid day all around as they emptied the bench. Ken Whit- worth in all this allowed an unearned run and three hits in 7 innings 1989

March 9 Darkness claimed victory in this game in a 12-12 tie be- tween UCI and Chapman. The teams tussled back and forth for the lead early on. The game was tied, 8-8, heading to the ninth inning as Chapman scored 4 times thanks to 2 errors and capped by a 2-run HR. UCI sal- vaged the tie with 4 in their half of the ninth with helped from 2 tri- ples in the inning while stranding the winning run at 3rd 1984

His impact will never be forgotten.” - Head Coach Ben Orloff Honoring Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone

Ralph J. Cicerone became the university’s fourth Chancellor in 1998, and with it, he brought his passion for athletics and baseball. The department was without a baseball program after it was cut following the 1992 season. In the spring of 1999, a grass-roots effort between Cicerone, athletic direc- tor Dan Guerrero, and five captains from UC Irvine athletic programs issued a referendum for students to vote to acquire the funding to bring baseball back to UC Irvine. Following its approval, ground was broken on Anteater Ballpark January 25, 2001. Anteater baseball was up and running in 2002, and has returned to its rightful place among the top programs in the nation.

Among being a leading expert on the causes of global climate change and heading the National Academy of Sciences which helped advise the Obama administration, Cicerone never lost his passion for baseball. Even as an established professor in 1980, he got the chance to be an announcer for the leaving him with a tough decision on which avenue to pursue. While stationed in Washington D.C., Cicerone would stay connect- ed to the program even stopping by to check in on the facilities.

In May of 2009, Cicerone and the ballpark became one-in-the-same as he was honored by having the field named in his honor. Following Chancellor Cicero- ne’s passing in November of 2016, the team added patches on the sleeves of their uniforms to commemorate Cicerone marked with his initials “RC” that were worn through the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The Anteaters are forever indebted to Chancellor Cicerone’s vision and efforts.

“UCI baseball held a special place in the heart of Chancellor Ralph Cicerone. It may surprise some to know that among Chancellor Cicerone’s many interests, achievements, and accomplishments, he had a genuine love for baseball, and specifically UCI baseball. It was because of Chancellor Cicerone’s determination to resurrect baseball at UCI in the late 90s that he enlisted the support of others in department and among the students, and a successful referen- dum was brought to the students and passed allowing baseball to once again be played at UCI after a 10-year absence. The number of students and staff impacted for a lifetime by this successful effort is incalculable.

Even after Ralph left UCI to assume new duties in Washington D.C., he continued to closely follow Anteater baseball via the internet and personal contact with friends who also cared about the ‘Eaters. On his occasional trips back to Orange County, he without fail stopped by Cicerone Field to check in, lend his support, and he rarely missed an Alumni Game in early February. We all lost a great friend in Ralph Cicerone, he is missed, and will continue to be missed.” - Head Coach Mike Gillespie
