Chapter One The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family The 1980–1985 Seasons ♦◊♦ As over forty-four thousand Pirates fans headed to Three Rivers Sta- dium for the home opener of the 1980 season, they had every reason to feel optimistic about the Pirates and Pittsburgh sports in general. In the 1970s, their Pirates had captured six divisional titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Their Steelers, after decades of futility, had won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, while the University of Pittsburgh Panthers led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett added to the excitement by winning a collegiate national championship in football. There was no reason for Pittsburgh sports fans to doubt that the 1980s would bring even more titles to the City of Champions. After the “We Are Family” Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, won the 1979 World Series, the ballclub’s goals for 1980 were “Two in a Row and Two Million Fans.”1 If the Pirates repeated as World Series champions, it would mark the first time that a Pirates team had accomplished that feat in franchise history. The offseason after the 1979 World Series victory was a whirlwind of awards and honors, highlighted by World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Stargell and Super Bowl MVP Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers appearing on the cover of the December 24, 1979, Sports Illustrated as corecipients of the magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award. -

I was saying to myself, ‘Randy, just be ready for it.’ ” Confidence is one characteristic that jumps out with Rosario. He is bright, has worked hard to learn English and made a quick transition to the bullpen after making 55 starts in the minors from the time he was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 until the middle of last season. It also helps to have a fastball that can reach 94 miles per hour and a wipeout slider. That will give you confidence, too — and encourage a team like the Twins to give a Class AA pitcher a chance in the majors. -

Abington Senior High School, Abington, PA, 19001 May 2019 Th e Mueller Report By Rachel Oh Th roughout March and April, the Mueller Investigation was heavily publicized, being covered on every major news source. Th e investigation began when Trump fi red former FBI director, James Comey, in early May 2017, shortly aft er he confi rmed that there was an ongoing investigation to prove whether Russia was involved with the 2016 election. Aft er dropping Comey, former FBI director Robert Mueller was assigned to continue the investigation concerning Russia’s possible interference with the election. Fast forward to almost two years later, as Mueller and his team progress with the investigation, several government offi cials and personnel pled guilty to various crimes, including Michael Cohen and Flynn. Th e special counsel released this 448 page (redacted) report on April 19, 2019, to the public, and the verdict was somewhat anticlimactic. Although the report did fi nd that people involved with Trump’s campaign had connections with Russia during the campaign, Trump constantly tried to delay the Russia investigation, and that Trump was extremely eager to expose Clinton during the election, there was ultimately not enough evidence to conclude that there was criminal activity between Russia and Trump, just that the evidence presented was concerning. However, there are about 14 redacted statements that are still being investigated. Th e report was broken down into two volumes: one explaining how Russia tried to interfere with the election and exploring the possibility of collusion with the Trump campaign, and the other detailing issues of obstruction of justice related to the investigation. -
