In the first phase, dating back to primeval times, the Igbo recognized several supreme nature deities in various domains. This was followed by a phase of the undisputed supremacy of )Ud (the Earth Goddess) as supreme deity. Traces of that primeval dominance persist till today in some parts of Igboland. The third phase was one of rivalry over supremacy· between Earth and Sky, possibly owing to influences from religious traditions founded on the belief in a supreme sky-dwelling God. In the fourth and fifth phases, the idea of Chukwu as supreme. deity was formally established by the Nri and Ar? respectively in support of their.hegemonic'enterprise in Igbo- land. The exploitativeness of the ArC? powez- seems to .have resulted in the debasement of the idea of Chukwu as supreme God in the Igbo mind, hence the satiric. and.~ images of the anthropo- morphic supreme God in various folktales from the .sixth phase. The sev~nth phase saw the selection, adoption and adaptation of some of the numerous ideas of supreme God founn bv the Christian missionaries in their efforts to propagate Christianity in the idiom of the people. -

To claim the right of being practiced freely, Odinaniwage war with the school. The ins and outs of these conflicts permits of postulating that “things fall apart” in “Dead Men’s Path”, a short story excerpted from Achebe’s Girls at War and Other Stories. How truly involved are the people in the practice of Ọkpukpere-chi? And, to what extent has its practice guarantee social stability within the Bende communities? This study articulates the idea of that Ọkpukpere-chi anchors its existence on only, but one Supreme Being: Chineke (God) and many lower supernatural beings or deities (Arusi).The world view of Ọkpukpere-chi cements relations among the various Bende communities. This assertion is clearly reflected in the way and manner that, Ọkpukpere-chi practice in more ways than one, served as an umbilical cord which connected and coordinated all other facets of life. All activities in the society, whether farming, hunting, marketing, social relations, and even recreation are governed by laws and taboos, and all blend inextricably in a complicated ritual with a view to throwing light on its structure, functions and modus operandi. -

Despite the terrors orchestrated by alien religions across the globe in general and Africa in particular, only a few scholars have called for the demarginalization of indigenous African spirituality as a means of rebuilding the man and his world. For instance, Soyinka, one of Africa’s foremost literary scholars has contended that African spirituality has been marginalized by the aggressive, often bloody intrusion of Christianity and Islam on African soil. And for him, African spirituality provides sources of spiritual strength to its people and acts as rallying point in their struggle for liberation and human dignity. In its attempt to further this line of thought, this paper argues that African indigenous deities have been misrepresented, demonized and pushed outside the margins of the continent’s discourse of spirituality by the practitioners of alien religions who at the momentseek to bring the world to a state of nothingness. Focusing on some selected Igbo deities, the paper interrogates some disgruntled mistranslations that demonize heroic indigenous deities in order to establish instances of the epistemological damages which the colonizer has done to the colonized. -

Many of the papers dwelt on the image and role of women in contemporary African literature with, of course, particular attention to their inscriptions in Achebe's fiction. We felt, however, that the images of women as they have been presented by both African men and women writers and critics would benefit from being complement ed, fragmented and tested and that a useful, albeit complex, site for this inquiry could be West African oral representations of the female. -

What Technology Produced, the Igbo-Ukwu Bronzes: the Diachronic and Synchronic Study of "Ichi" Symbols
WHAT TECHNOLOGY PRODUCED, THE IGBO-UKWU BRONZES: THE DIACHRONIC AND SYNCHRONIC STUDY OF "ICHI" SYMBOLS Chris Ebighgbo Abstract The Igbo-Ukwu bronze objects were discovered accidentally as from 1938 and detailed archeological works were carried out in 1959 - 61 by Professors Thurstan Shaw and Hartle at two different sites at Igbo-Ukwu and Ezira respectively and published in 1970 by Thurstan Shaw. These works dated 9th Century A.D radiocarbon analysis. A further functional analysis of the works by Professor MA. Onwuejeogu showed that these works portrayed spiritual/mystical kingdom of Nri, Igbo of Africa. Again the works were presumed to be produced by indigenous Igbo artists/craftsmen. The complexity and uniqueness of style and technique of production were assumed by some scholars to be due to much lead added to them. While others believe that it was purely a matter of technology and state of the mind. The styles and techniques of Igbo-Ukwu were completely different from that of Benin and Ife bronzes. This research aims at finding out the correlation between the peaceful, stable and spiritually evolved government of Eze Nri and the technology that produced the Art pieces. Could it be the material (leaded bronzes) or the technology (techniques) or both of them (material and technology) plus stable economy that led to such productions? These are the contextual arguments that complement a practical production using metallic analysis of Thurstan Shaw and other metals already used by the author in producing some bronze works with the ichi symbolism. This is a call for Ndigbo to think home like other cultural areas of Nigeria, such as the Binis who are still using their cultural settings to enhance their art/bronze casting as well as integrating themselves well in Nigerian politics.
