Zulehner ACKNOWLEDGEMENT 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Having grown up in a Society plagued by sickness and disease worsened by lack of adequate health and medical care in the midst of poverty and hunger, a society now booming with a deep-seated hunger for miracles and healing, my journey in Pastoral Theology has often been interrupted by questions that began with ‘why’. The demand to understand ‘why’ has been motivated by my experience of a young, dynamic and fast growing church that in recent days tend to take the biblical injunction of Christ to -“go and proclaim the gospel and heal the sick”- serious. In the face of this, the need to recall to our minds the basis of the Christian ministry to the sick became crucial. The strong influence of the fast growing prosperity evangelical churches with emphasis on healing and deliverance seemed to have added to my zeal and interest to research into this topic. In the Igbo society, search for healing has become the order of the day but with many aberrations reported here and there. The traditional view of sickness and the Christian understanding of suffering seemed interesting to compare in the face of some carry- overs or a syncretistic mixtures of the two- traditional and Christian practices. Equally, my experiences and study in the Western society and my contact with the much improved and sophisticated but praiseworthy medical system in place and the somewhat absence or elimination of God from the medical laboratory and the almost complete entrusting of the function of healing to medicine, raises the question in me: Who heals actually? In 2000-2002, the Institute of Pastoral Theology of the University of Vienna through Markus Beranek under Prof. DDr. Paul M. Zulehner carried out a study in Europe to determine how far the faithful in four selected parish communities in Austria and Ger- many see their parish communities as a place of healing and salvation – “Gemeinde als Heil/Land”. The result was interesting as it was discovered that none of the interviewed expected bodily healing from the parish community. Medicine has taken over that func- tion. It was interesting then to make a similar study in Africa particularly, in Igbo Land where the practice of “healing Mass” has become rampant. I take this opportunity to acknowledge my indebtedness to all those who demonstrated their understanding to my quest and have differently played a supportive role. The successful completion of this work today would not have been possible without the help and direction of many. It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality.

The Igbo man expects all he needs for the betterment of his life from Chukwu. He worships Chukwu traditionally. His religion, the African Traditional Religion, was existing before the white man came to the Igbo land of Nigeria with his Christianity. The Igbo man believes that he achieves a lot by praying to Chukwu. It is by prayer that he asks for the good things of life. He believes that prayer has enough efficacy to elicit mercy from Chukwu. This paper shows that the Igbo man, to a large extent, believes that his prayer contributes in making life better for him. It also makes it clear that he says different kinds of prayer that are spontaneous or planned, private or public. Introduction Since the Igbo man believes in Chukwu (God), he cannot help worshipping him because he has to relate with the great Being that made him. He has to sanctify himself in order to find favour in Chukwu. He has to obey the laws of his land. He keeps off from blood. He must not spill blood otherwise he cannot stand before Chukwu to ask for favour and succeed. In spite of that it can cause him some ill health as the Igbo people say that those whose hands are bloody are under curses which affect their destines. The Igboman purifies himself by avoiding sins that will bring about abominations on the land.

B. Gabriel Okpalike Nnamdi Azikiwe University This work is set against the backdrop of the Sub-Saharan African environment observed to be morally degenerative. It judges that the level of decadence in the continent that could even amount to depravity could be blamed upon the disconnect between the present-day African and a moral tradition that has been swept under the carpet through history; this tradition being grounded upon a world view. World-view lies at the basis of the interpretation and operation of the world. It is the foundation of culture, religion, philosophy, morality and so forth; an attempt of humans to impose an order in which the human society works.1 Most times when the African world-view is discussed, the Africa often thought of and represented is the Africa as before in which it is very likely to see religion and community feature as two basic characters of Africa from which morality can be sifted. In his popular work Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe had above all things shown that this old Africa has been replaced by a new breed and things cannot be the same again. In the first instance, the former African communalism in which the community was the primary beneficiary of individual wealth has been wrestled down by capitalism in which the individual is defined by the extent in which he accumulates surplus value.

Geotechnical properties of soils used for these constructions should be carefully and comprehensively studied to avoid inappropriate designs, delays in construction schedules, expensive construction modifications, use of substandard burrow material, post construction remedial work, failure of a structure and subsequent litigation, as the case may be. However, Amuzukwu-Ibeku lateritic soil has been used on several occasions as a subgrade material in road constructions within the Umuahia region of Abia State. Thus, this paper investigated the geotechnical properties of this soil, which led to the observation of its substandard nature. All analyses were carried out in accordance to the British Standard Institution. The liquid limit of the soil has an average of 52%, plastic limit of 34% average and plasticity index of 18%.

The Igbo have embraced foreign languages in place of their mother tongue (Igbo language). This paper is therefore aimed at highlighting the importance of Igbo language as a major form of Igbo identity. This study will immensely benefit students, researchers and Igbo society in general. A framework was formulated to direct research effort on the development and study of Igbo language, the relationship between Igbo language and culture, the importance of Igbo language as a major form of Igbo identity, the place of Igbo language in the minds of the present Igbo and factors militating against the growth of the language and finally recommendations were given. Language is power as well as great weapon for cultural preservation. Only humans have spoken and written languages, and language is the key note of culture because without it, culture does not exist. It is the medium of language that conveys the socio-political, economic and religious thoughts from individual to individual, and from generation to generation.
