We assume that the keyword field will be used for more specific information than will be captured in the official genres and that some of the information currently in the genre field will be moved to the keyword field. We recommend that in the future genres may be added to the official list based on their number of uses as keyword and their qualification as a genre. The aspect of age-appropriateness, previously reflected in such genres as Adult, Children, Teen, and reflected in many terms listed in lists of manga genres, is not in fact an aspect of genre. We recommend the addition of a field for publisher-supplied target age designations. We defer any recommendation on whether some sequence types should not accept genre identifications. Under the current framework, RC content is essentially banned, and its sale and distribution is prohibited by Commonwealth, state and territory enforcement legislation. RESUMEN El Código Penal español, tras la reforma operada por la Ley Orgánica 1/2015, de 30 de marzo, incorpora en su artículo 189.1 una definición de aquello que entiende el legislador como pornografía infantil. Siguiendo esta definición, podemos distinguir entre la pornografía infantil clásica (representaciones en que han intervenido menores reales, sin manipulación de imagen) y la pornografía alusiva a menores (aquella en cuya elaboración no se utiliza realmente a menores de edad, o estos son utilizados de forma indirecta). La pornografía alusiva a menores puede a su vez subdividirse en dos grupos: pornografía infantil técnica y virtual. Se trata de un nuevo tipo de pornografía infantil surgido a raíz de la evolución tecnológica y de la preocupación de los legisladores de todo el mundo por la necesidad de perseguir y sancionar toda conducta relacionada con la pornografía infantil. No obstante, la dificultad –o imposibilidad en muchas ocasiones− para determinar la edad real de las personas representadas en las imágenes investigadas ha derivado en una presunción iuris tantum que admite prueba en contrario y que en la práctica se materializa en una inversión de la carga de la prueba. Lolita Latina An Examination of Gothic and Lolita Style in the Mexican Environment A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Visual and Material Culture College of Creative Arts Massey University Wellington, New Zealand Kathryn Adèle Hardy Bernal 2019 Abstract This thesis, completed for the award of Doctor of Philosophy in Visual and Material Culture, Ph.D., examines the development of the fashion-based Mexican Gothic and Lolita movement, and its evolution from its subcultural Japanese roots. It asks, “What are the cultural conditions that encourage this movement to flourish in the Mexican environment?” In turn, “What does Mexican culture contribute to Mexican Gothic and Lolita style?” And, “What does Mexican Gothic and Lolita style say about Mexican culture, society, and beliefs?” The Gothic and Lolita movement is currently thriving in Mexico as an authentic, independent, creative, handmade fashion industry, yet to be co-opted into mainstream culture. With the do-it-yourself aspect of the movement comes its own, unique, cultural flavour. As such, it transforms and rearranges meanings of the original subcultural style in order to make new statements, which subvert the meanings, and understandings, of the Japanese Lolita identity. Analyses of Mexican Gothic and Lolita styles, in context with the Mexican environment, culture, and belief systems, as well as the operation of the Mexican Gothic and Lolita industry, are major focal points of this study.

McCain, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Caetlin Benson-Allott, PhD ABSTRACT Fanfiction is a Genre of literature that scholars can trace all the way back to ancient Greece and thus it has Garnered a multitude of definitions over the years. The purpose of this project is to move beyond the description of, “Stories based off of another author’s work” and to instead examine the ways in which contemporary fanfiction differs from other types of transformative texts, as well as to highlight how it has changed since its move into online archives. In this thesis I arGue that contemporary fanfiction is a highly communal Genre that uses other authors’ works as a starting point, but the stories fans then produce are unique in the narrative elements they emphasize, the lanGuaGe the stories are written in, and the mediums throuGh which the readers consume them. In order to demonstrate this, I examine numerous fics from four different fandoms in order to establish five characteristics of the genre: shared knowledge, lanGuaGe, medium, “bad” writinG, and the inclusion of critical analysis. I then end with a case study of Fifty Shades of Grey, using this work’s unique move from fic to mainstream novel in order to highlight how fic is its own style of writing, one seeped in both complexity and contradiction.

Keating and Jin Ha Lee Revised 19 March 2018 Accepted 3 May 2018 Information School, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to improve the understanding of relevant information features for users seeking anime recommendations. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses content analysis of 396 recommendation request threads from the online forum at Anime News Network. Findings – In total, 19 important anime information features were identified, including Work, Theme, Genre, Audience, Mood, while Artwork/Visual Style, Audio Style, and Language were mentioned less frequently. However, when mentioned, these codes were discussed with specificity and depth. Research limitations/implications – This study analyzed a relatively small number of 396 forum records, without demographic information. Using content analysis of online forum threads written by real users provided both informational breadth and depth. Future studies would benefit from using content analysis to investigate unfamiliar multimedia information and user groups. Practical implications – The findings of this study can be implemented in anime-related databases and information systems to enhance organization, browsing/retrieval, and recommendation of anime, which can be further utilized for other audiovisual materials. Originality/value – This is one of the few studies that investigate what anime users need and want. This research examines an understudied cultural medium, underserved by current research, despite an expanding community of anime users.

This astonishing number is evidence of the popularity of a genre of erotic manga and anime referred to as hentai or sometimes the abbreviation ‘H’ (pronounced etchi in Japanese) by western fans. However, despite the popularity of the genre and its massive presence on the internet, the category hentai is not discussed in English-language studies of manga and anime such as Poitras’s The Anime Companion, Napier’s Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke, Allison’s Permitted and Prohibited Desires: Mothers, Comics and Censorship in Japan or Buckley’s Encyclopedia of Japanese Popular Culture. Why is this so? The reason is not prudishness but rather the fact that use of the term hentai to refer to erotic or sexual manga and anime in general is not a Japanese but an English innovation. In Japanese hentai can reference sexual material but only of an extreme, ‘abnormal’ or ‘perverse’ kind; it is not a general category. The Japanese use of hentai refers to both same-sex and heterosexual activities which are considered unusual but also extreme. While both ‘H’/etchi and ero can be used to refer to manga and anime with sexual content, hentai is only used to refer to unusual or perverse 1 sexual situations – this might be number of partners as in gang rape, or bizarre partners as in aliens or monsters or illicit partners as in children (rorikon and shōtakon).
