A CAVALLO DELLA TIGRE LA BUGIARDA PANE AMORE E FANTASIA PANE AMORE E GELOSIA Luigi Comencini Luigi Comencini Luigi Comencini Luigi Comencini 1961 1965 1953 1954 TITANUS LIBRARY CLASSICAL MOVIES The most celebrated italian film production company TITANUS, was born more than a Century ago, in 1904. His creator, Gustavo Lombardo was not yet in his twenties - and the cinema was still called the cinematograph. Yet the intuition about the extraordinary potential of this new means of expression prompted that boy to dedicate his life to the "seventh art". Italian filmmakers were focusing on complex set designs, lavish costumes, and record budgets, to produce pioneering films. It was time for a change. The films of the Titanus Library have made the history of Italian Cinema, showcasing the most important directors and actors of our panorama, from Sophia Loren to Alain Delon, from De Sica to Antonioni crossing all the genres that have made our cinema so famous and well appreciated around the world. The production alternated career directors and young nearly unknown directors. Films like Olmi’s Il posto, or Zurlini’s La ragazza con la valigia, or Petri’s I giorni contati - not to forget Il camorrista by Giuseppe Tornatore – were making an appeal to a passion - no less intense or less lucid than that which animated more spectacular productions such as Nanni Loy’s Le quattro giornate di Napoli or colossals like Sodoma e Gomorra, or matchless masterpieces such a Luchino Visconti’s Il Gattopardo. ACTION ACTIONHORROR HORROR THRILLERTHRILLER GREAT COMEDY & DIRECTORS MUSICAL LIBRARY CELEBRITIES DRAMA WESTERN ACTION HORROR THRILLER Among the action, horror and thrillers we can outline the Mario Bava films DEMONI and DEMONI 2 and VAMPIRES by Riccardo Freda. Not to forget is the collection of the Dario Argento movies CREEPERS, THE CAT O' NINE TAILS, TENEBRAE and THE BIRD WITH CRYSTAL PLUMAGE known all over the world, now a classic icon among the genre. Action movies such as BIG GUNS (TONY ARZENTA in italian) by Duccio Tessari - enriched by the impeccable performance of Alain Delon - have made the history of Italian classic movies in the mafia genre. The Commedia all’Italiana was made famous by many details like the plots with very well-designed characters and the storylines of Italy after the war, but we cannot forget the names that made it so great like Monicelli, De Sica, Petri, Comencini, Loy and many others highlighted in this library. The genre refers to a period from the late Fifties to the early Seventies and there are some common traits like grotesque overtones, satire of manners, a strong focus on social issues of the period like sex, divorce, contraception, the economic rise of the country and its various consequences, the traditional religious influence of the Catholic Church and a prevailing, middle-class setting often characterized by comic contents in a background of sadness and social criticism. Issue #70 Featuring: TURN I’ll KILL YOU, THE FAR SIDE OF JERICHO, Spaghetti Western Poster Art, Spaghetti Western Film Locations in the U.S.A., Tim Lucas interview, DVD reviews WAI! #70 The Swingin’ Doors Welcome to another on-line edition of Westerns…All’Italiana! kicking off 2008. Several things are happening for the fanzine. We have found a host or I should say two hosts for the zine. Jamie Edwards and his Drive-In Connection are hosting the zine for most of our U.S. readers (www.thedriveinconnection.com) and Sebastian Haselbeck is hosting it at his Spaghetti Westerns Database for the European readers (www.spaghetti- western.net). Our own Kim August is working on a new website (here’s her current blog site http://gunsmudblood.blogspot.com/ ) that will archive all editions of the zine starting with issue #1. This of course will take quite a while to complete with Kim still in college. Thankfully she’s very young as she’ll be working on this project until her retirement 60 years from now. Anyway you can visit these sites and read or download your copy of the fanzine whenever you feel the urge. Several new DVD and CD releases have been issued since the last edition of WAI! and co-editor Lee Broughton has covered the DVDs as always. The CDs will be featured on the last page of each issue so you will be made aware of what is available. We have completed several interviews of interest in recent months. One with author Tim Lucas, who has just recently released his huge volume on Mario Bava, appears in this issue.

The aim is also to show the impact that African-American history (particularly slavery) has had on African American literature. Slavery is one of the main themes of African American writers, particularly in the 18th century; however, it is also an important subject of modern literature and writers. One of those is Toni Morrison, who is a literary voice of slave literature and whose work seeks to shed a light on the problems of African American people.
