Next up are three unusual c1949 ‘ Film by Fowden F Serve . The spelling is cor- rect; there is no ‘R’ in the name. These came ei- ther in strips (2/6d) or as packets of six individual frames (6d). As you can see, they are not negaves and were designed to be enjoyed using a ‘ vuwer’ (sic). The three shown here came from three of the five acets eicn ‘Cup-Tie Thrills’ of ames in the 1948-49 comeon an their vae is n- nown athoh I wo rate them mysef at aron a tenner each.

And… a second page of New Arrivals! Yes, this month has been rather busy so it merits an extra page.

Town’s first away victory of the 2018-19 campaign at Wolves on Sunday 26th November saw them rewarded with a debut in the new set of Topps ‘Magic at Molineux’ -0 . T d v f 4 u d d p u f 74.

T m f T’ pp d f Topps Match a a cards, Mooy predictably being the featured player on card OD65. These cards are basically the same as the standard Match Aax cards for the season except that they have a tag-line - in this case “Match-winning midfielder!” - and are only available for two to three weeks.

As you might be aware, I don’t real- ly collect pro- grammes; the only ones that I do aim for are ‘special’ ones to mark specific occasions and also I try to find ONE home programme for eve- ry season. This is nowhere near as easy as you might think, as Town ‘ homes’ before WW2 are incredibly hard - and expensive!! - to find, so you can imagine my delight when I snagged these two from eBay for just £30 each. They’re not perfect - scores ren nse - but at that prce I ece that I oul smply have to take the plunge. As you can see, the first s from 1930-31 hlst the secon (unate) programme s from season 1933-34.

MAGAZINE POSTERS/ARTICLES I am grateful to Mike McIntyre ho has supple me th a number of posters about hch I as un- aare urng the past month. Inclue are posters of Kongolo, Depotre, Schnler an - finally - some recognon for onny Hogg’s efforts, all of hch can be seen n greater etal on my ebste.

Other football cards As I know that there are several subscribers to this newsleer who are neither HTAFC fans nor yddmpg md/m.’... PLS“mSppm”(1922-3)

Another small set of cards with only eight in total for you to find, each approximately 68mm x 41mm, these will set you back around £8.00 each. According to Alan Jenkins this set is the last of the football- related card sets issued by Pals (E. Hulton & Co. Ltd.) magazine to be check- listed, even though it was the first to be issued, beginning in 1922. The cards are unnumbered and are listed here in alphabecal order. etails of which is- sues the cards were included with are as yet unknown, although it’s possible that they were included with the first eight issues of Pals magazine, a short- lived periodical that was eventually incorporated into Boys’ Magazine in 1923. I currently only have ‘back’ images for the one card - Villa’s Frank Moss - so if you can help me out with scans then please do. Featured players are A. Archibald (lasgow angers) A. rimsdell (Toenham Hotspur) Jack Harrow (Chelsea) .W. Mercer (Sheffield United) Frank Moss (Aston Villa) Joseph Smith (West Bromwich Albion) Alec Troup (undee) - is- sue #16, dated 22nd January, 1923 and ‘Andy’ Wilson (Middlesbrough).

‘PRICELESS - THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY’ Rodney Marsh (2002) This is another one of those books which I remember enjoying and then lending out to a friend who never returned it. Why do they do that? And what becomes of the books? Do they end up on eBay dbkkgddddj,’d- bfi.dud -quddEgdgfRd, "If you don't work harder I'll pull you off at half-e" to which Marsh replied, "Crikey Alf at Manchester City all we get is an or- ange and a cup of tea." Marsh was never picked again and his total of England caps was forever stuck on nine. My copy was the 320 page hardback and I have to admit that it was an easy read and is described on Amazon thus: “Packed with anecdotes and stories fro his successful spell in the States this autobiography of football averick Rodney Marsh charts his tough and violent upbringing in the East End and the eergence of his football career at fashionable Fulha playing alongside the leg- endary ohnny aynes. Aer a spell at PR he oved to Manches- ter City where he becae a cult hero aong the fans who loved his outrageous skills. It was also the period in which he first grew close to . e is now well known for his appearances as a reg- ular television sports pundit.” The TV sports pundit reference is now a bit passé as he vanished from the screens of in January 2005 when he was sacked for making a tasteless remark about Asian tsunami disaster. In truth, the joke was totally in keeping with his character and was intended as a harmless pun on the Newcastle supporters - the Toon Army - but with on the rise, he was one of the early more high prole sporng vicms. Marsh went on to work in radio at Sirius Satellite Radio in North America where he covers the English remier League for Americans. Enough about the man; here is a couple of polarised customer reviews from Amazon : “I hold 1970's icons like Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, , Tony Currie ,Charlie George et al in the highest regard; they're footballing demigods to me. You see, they just don't make footballers in that mould any- more. These layers were free sirited and an-authoritarian , hay to work under managers who let them ex- ress themseles as they chose , but uick to jum shi when the stern, restrice hand of managerial disciline was imosed. Feckless, caricious and egocentric erhas, but they were all footballing geniuses caable of the most outrageous and sublime acts of skill which lit u football grounds throughout the halcyon days of the 1970's. Rod- ney Marsh's book "Priceless" tells his tale and he comes across as a likeable bloke; warm, honest, irreressably cheerful, hard working and shar wied. is negae traits aear to be his short temer, bluntness and a tenden- cy toward tactlessness. I admired his oenness about his dicult relaonshi with his father, his osie reacon to arious failures in his career and his willingness to accet with good grace the conseuences of exressing his oin- ions excessiely frankly. There were some funny laugh-out-loud anecdotes , such as a remarkable England career- terminang aside to Sir lf Ramsay and a arcularly frank Manchester City career-ending dialogue with . oweer there weren't as many as I thought there would be, certainly comared to Frank Worthington's au- tobiograhy for examle. Perhas that was because Rodney wasn't a big bird chaser and heay boozer. lot of the content of the book was a bit tame and bland and lacked ,well, some blunt, frank oinions which might hae liened it u a bit. oweer it's well worth a read, esecially if you're an admirer of the Great Footballing Maericks of the 1970's.” (***** L. Davidson) “s a layer Rodney Marsh could neer be described as boring, staid, or lacking in entertainment alue. Unfortu- nately the same could not be said of 'Priceless'. It oers lile insight into either Rodney Marsh the erson, or the soccer world of the 190's 1970's. From one of the most excing layers of his generaon this is a genuine disa- ointment. It comares ery badly with some recent truly entertaining footballing biograhies, such as that oered by Paulo Di Canio and . Sorry Rodney, you were a great layer, a great entertainer, but 'Priceless' is simly Pointless!” (* Anonymous) hpshuddersfieldtowncollecon.wordpress.com 6
