    I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). But Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Jazz and People’s Movement do not fit neatly into the usual categories historians use to describe the politics of the “long Sixties.” Kirk occupied a hybrid position – equal parts radical, reformist, and countercultural – and fashioned himself as what scholars such as Elizabeth Jelin and Lorena Oropeza have called “memory entrepreneurs”- men and women who give voice to those disappeared or otherwise silenced by the state.

Based on a longtime love of jazz, I originally intended to write my paper on the comparative racial dimensions of East and West Coast jazz. With this in mind, I picked up Charley Gerard’s book, Jazz in Black and White (Greenwood Press, 1998), to do some background reading. It was in this book that I first read about the Jazz and People’s Movement (JPM), Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s activist group from 1970-1. Almost immediately, I decided to switch my topic and focus on the JPM. My initial research centered on periodical coverage of the movement, which I gathered at Boston University’s Mugar Library and the Boston Public Library.
