aus: Hugo Kastner: SNOOKER – Spieler, Regeln & Rekorde Update: Mai 2012 Snooker World Championship – Hall of Fame Es begann 1927 … 1927 wurde die erste Weltmeisterschaft im Snooker in der Camkin’s Hall in Birmingham ausgetragen. Ein Vergleich mit heute ist schier unmöglich, wenngleich mit dem legendären Joe Davis nicht nur der Initiator des Turniers, sondern gleichzeitig der für die nächsten achtzehn Jahre unschlagbare Meister dieses Sports die Trophäe sowie ₤6 10s gewann. Snooker war noch kein Breitensport, die Tische, Kugeln und Queues nicht von der heutigen Qualität und die Weltmeisterschaft trotz aller Perfektion der Champions nur eine Randnotiz in den internationalen Gazetten. Der absolute Tiefpunkt wurde in den Fünfzigerjahren erreicht, als 1952 zwei Organisationen Weltmeisterschaftsturniere veranstalteten, die Billiard Association eine „offizielle“ mit sage und schreibe zwei (!) Teilnehmern. Zwischen 1952 und 1957 fanden mäßig beachtete Matchplay- Weltturniere statt, danach erlosch das Snookerleben auf WM-Niveau für einige Jahre vollkommen. Ab 1964 waren die unregelmäßig ausgetragenen Challenge-Turniere, die alle an den Titelverteidiger John Pulman gingen, die Krönung des bescheiden dahin dümpelnden Snookerjahres. Moderne Zeiten … Crucible Theatre … Erst mit Ende der Sechzigerjahre ging man zum Knockout-Format zurück, das bei den folgenden acht Turnieren mit John Spencer, Ray Reardon und Alex Higgins drei Allzeitgrößen der Snookergeschichte zu Titelehren führte. Ab dieser Zeit darf man vom modernen Snooker sprechen, wenngleich die meisten Snooker-Kommentatoren erst ab den Turnieren von 1976 den großen Durchbruch zum Massensport zu erkennen glauben. Nun waren die WM-Matches nicht mehr über die gesamte Saison verteilt, sondern wurden über circa zwei Wochen an einem Ort durchgeführt. Der Tabakkonzern Embassy übernahm damals das Sponsoring der World Championships, die ab dem folgenden Jahr 1977 allesamt im Crucible Theatre in Sheffield durchgeführt wurden. -

University of Cape Town ABSTRACT ARTICULATING CLASS: LANGUAGE AND CONFLICT IN ENGLISH LITERATURE, FROM GASKELL TO TRESSELL Concentrating on English literary texts written between the 1830s and 1914 and which have the working class as their central focus, the thesis examines various ways in which class conflict inheres within the textual language, particularly as far as the representation of working-class speech is concerned. The study is made largely within V. N. Voloshinov's understanding of language. Chapter 1 examines the social role of "standard English" (including accent) and its relationship to forms of English stigmatised as inadequate, and argues that the phoneticisation of working-class speech in novels like those of William Pett Ridge is to indicate its inadequacy within a situation where use of the "standard language" is regarded as a mark of all kinds of superiority, and where the language of narrative prose has, essentially, the "accent" of "standard English". The periodisation of the thesis is discussed: the "industrial reformist" novels of the Chartist years and the "slum literature" of the 1880s and '90s were bourgeois responses to working-class struggle. -

As the Introduction explains this thesis sets out to look at the Georgians* achievement in poetry in the light of their intentions as avowed in prose and their methods as exemplified hy their poems. This is chiefly a critical exercise hut history has heen used to clear away the inevitable distortion which results from looking at Georgian poetry after fifty years of Eliot- influenced hostility. The history of the movement is dealt with in Chapter 2. The next three chapters examine aspects of poetry which the Georgians themselves con sidered most interesting. Chapter 3 deals with form, Chapter 4 with diction and Chapter 5 with inspiration or attitude to subject matter. Chapter 6 looks at the aspect of Georgianism most commonly thought by later readers to define the movement, th a t is i t s subjects. -

CLAIMING TERRITORY: COLONIAL STATE SPACE AND THE MAKING OF BRITISH INDIA’S NORTH-WEST FRONTIER A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science by Jason G. Cons January 2005 © 2005 Jason G. Cons ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine the discursive construction of colonial state space in the context of British India’s turn of the century North-West Frontier. My central argument is that notions of a uniform state space posited in official theorizations of the frontier need to be reexamined not as evidence of a particular kind of rule, but rather as a claim to having accomplished it. Drawing on new colonial historiographies that suggest ways of reading archives and archival documents for their silences and on historical sociological understandings of state-formation, I offer close readings of three different kinds of documents: writing about the North-West Frontier by members of the colonial administration, annual general reports of the Survey of India, and narratives written by colonial frontier officers detailing their time and experience of “making” the frontier. I begin by looking at the writings of George Nathanial Curzon and others attempting to theorize the concept of frontiers in turn of the century political discourse. Framed against the backdrop of the “Great Game” for empire with Russia and the progressive territorial consolidation of colonial frontiers into borders in the late 19th century, these arguments constitute what I call a “colonial theory of frontiers.” This theory simultaneously naturalizes colonial space and presents borders as the inevitable result of colonial expansion. -

Comptes rendus / Book Reviews 839 was also a conservative romantic, a trait that became particularly pronounced in his Second World War columns. Writing of British naval valour, he proclaimed that “the spirit of Elizabethan days has come back to these islands once more.” (p. 131) His tone became more muted after the war, when the Labour Party which he despised came to power and implemented many of the provisions of the 1942 Beveridge Report. Baxter was vehemently opposed to socialism and the welfare state, siding decisively with the former in what he called the “battle of the individual against the state” (p. 242). His most evocative columns, however, such as that on the 1936 Abdication crisis, brought home to Canadians those events gripping what many still saw as the “mother dominion.” If I had one reservation about the book, it is that Baxter and the Canadian connection sometimes fades from view as Thompson sets out the context of successive British high political dramas. More might also be said about how, and in what ways, the ideas and sentiments Baxter espoused in his London Letters were received by his Maclean’s readers. Thompson gives us circulation numbers which attest to the magazine’s self-proclaimed status as “Canada’s National Magazine,” but how Baxter’s ideas shaped Canadians’ political, economic, social and cultural activities is left mostly unsaid. Nonetheless, this is a fine book, closely researched and carefully written. It is particularly strong on Baxter during the appeasement years, reflecting Thompson’s expertise in this period. Historians of the British world would benefit greatly from more transnational studies in the model of Thompson’s work on Beverley Baxter. -

Some Say That There Are Actually Four Players from Outside the U.K
Some say that there are actually four players from outside the U.K. that have been World Champion citing Australian Horace Lindrum, a nephew of Walter, who won the title in 1952. This event was boycotted by all the British professional players that year and for this reason many in the sport will not credit him with the achievement. The other three to make the list are first, Cliff Thorburn from Canada in 1980, defeating Alex Higgins 18 frames to 16. He also made the first 147 maximum break of the World Championships in his 1983 second round match against Terry Griffiths which he won 13 – 12. Third was Neil Robertson who won a never to be forgotten final against Scot Graeme Dott 18 frames to 13 in 2010. His route to the final had started with a match against Fergal O’Brien which he won 10 – 5. Next up was a heart stopping, come from behind win over Martin Gould after trailing 0 – 6 and again 5 – 11 before getting over the line 13 – 12. Steve Davis, multiple World Champion, was next and dispatched 13 – 5 which brought him to the semi finals and a 17 – 12 victory over Ali (The Captain) Carter. Third here but really second on the list is Ken Doherty from Eire who won the World title by beating Stephen Hendry, multiple World Champion winner from Scotland, at the Crucible in 1997 winning 18 - 12. Ken had previously become the I.B.S.F. amateur World Champion in 1989 by defeating Jon Birch of England 11 frames to 2 in the final held in Singapore. -

Law- rence, James Joyce, E. E. Cummings, and Oscar Wilde, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center in Austin, Texas is a Mecca for academic researchers from all over the world. At the same time, it is a Mecca for a very diff erent kind of researcher attracted to a very diff erent kind of archive. Take Alex, for example, a self-professed “goth” who describes his pilgrimage to the Ransom Center to view the Aleister Crowley archives in his “blog,” “Alex’s Journal.”¹ Among his other interests cited on the “user info” page, Alex lists “death metal,” “body piercing,” “drinking,” “comics” “hurting peoples brains [sic],” “debauchery,” “subdural haematomas,” and “weirding out weird people.” e sheer eccentricity of the Ransom’s collec- tions—which include high literary, mass cultural, and even counter-cul- tural material—make it a place where a professor earnestly poring over a Joyce manuscript might rub shoulders with a fan like Alex who describes e full account of Alex’s research trip reads as follows: “Went to the Harry Ransom Centre and looked at rare Aleister Crowley manuscripts which was lots of fun. I fi lled out all these request tags and they’re like ‘are you for real or are you playing around?!?’ and I said ‘I’m very serious’ and they said ‘this might take a while’ and I said ‘I can wait.’ So eventually they brought me out boxes of stuff , he he, and I spent several hours poring over the stuff and taking some cool notes.” ESC . -

Signature_______________________________________ Date____________________ 2 Abstract Weird fiction is a mode in the Gothic lineage, cognate with horror, particularly associated with the early twentieth-century pulp writing of H. P. Lovecraft and others for Weird Tales magazine. However, the roots of the weird lie earlier and late-Victorian British and Edwardian writers such as Arthur Machen, Count Stenbock, M. P. Shiel, and John Buchan created varyingly influential iterations of the mode. This thesis is predicated on an argument that Lovecraft’s recent rehabilitation into the western canon, together with his ongoing and arguably ever-increasing impact on popular culture, demands an examination of the earlier weird fiction that fed into and resulted in Lovecraft’s work.
