Be surprised, be very surprised...By Penny Dredfulthanks to the previous reviewer I got this book in kindle. It's so informative and collected people together that either I didn't know before, or didn't know the extent of their work or influence, and there's plenty of detail. I especially appreciate the way Rius includes examples of the magicians' expertise. Crowley's life is a blast and who would have thought, Tesla Tunguska!? So much to discover and a pleasure to read. Two little, little things though; the author continually uses "tenants" when he means "tenets", so not to rely wholly on spellcheck. The other is that the folk magician Pickingill is featured when his story is a shadow of sometimes mixed up with James Murrell (1785ndash;1860) the renowned Cunning man from Hadleigh, Essex. Murrell even claimed the title "the Devil's master" and there's plenty of documentation out there to support accounts.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. -
Language and Conflict in English Literature from Gaskell to Tressell
ARTICULATING CLASS: LANGUAGE AND CONFLICT IN ENGLISH LITERATURE FROM GASKELL TO TRESSELL Timothy John James University of Cape Town Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN JANUARY 1992 The copyright of this thesis vests in the author. University of Cape Town ABSTRACT ARTICULATING CLASS: LANGUAGE AND CONFLICT IN ENGLISH LITERATURE, FROM GASKELL TO TRESSELL Concentrating on English literary texts written between the 1830s and 1914 and which have the working class as their central focus, the thesis examines various ways in which class conflict inheres within the textual language, particularly as far as the representation of working-class speech is concerned. The study is made largely within V. N. Voloshinov's understanding of language. Chapter 1 examines the social role of "standard English" (including accent) and its relationship to forms of English stigmatised as inadequate, and argues that the phoneticisation of working-class speech in novels like those of William Pett Ridge is to indicate its inadequacy within a situation where use of the "standard language" is regarded as a mark of all kinds of superiority, and where the language of narrative prose has, essentially, the "accent" of "standard English". The periodisation of the thesis is discussed: the "industrial reformist" novels of the Chartist years and the "slum literature" of the 1880s and '90s were bourgeois responses to working-class struggle. -

Who Is George Pingill.Cdr
ica Gardneriana W www.wiccagardneriana.net Who is George Pinckingill George Pickingill, sometimes known simply as "Old George", (one assumes to separate him from his namesake child) is as much an enigma today to many as he must have been when he was alive. Many stories surround this figure, (both 'good' and 'bad' - depending on the perspective one takes) and it is hard to separate the myth from the man. This is especially so in the modern climate wherein many views are naturally biased towards the "Neo-pagan" ways of thought and the views of the founders of the same are often received and treated as gospel. I myself have heard many stories, (from both 'sides of the fence') but none have fascinated me nor awaked as much of a 'ring of truth' as those that I have heard from one of his descendants - Bill Liddell." (Scott Bisseker, 2000) "George Pickingill is central to many of the claims advanced by Modern Witchcraft. Claire Smythe refers to him as George Pickingale in her article 'Canewdon', which was published in '50 Strange Stories of the Supernatural' (edited by ). Smythe claims "Canewdon was not only one of the last places in which the traditional belief in witches survived, but also the home of the last Masters of Witches (Canewdon legend maintains that their witches have a Master). This old man, George Pickingale, died in 1909 aged ninety three. Pickingale was both a black and white magician, and while he was much feared by the villagers who dared not disobey him for fear of what he might do in reprisal, he would also charm their warts and was sometimes called in to settle their disputes. -
