Since the feast day lands on a Sunday this year, the Sunday celebration (6th Sunday in Ordinary Time) overrides the feast day, so in essence, there isn’t any Valentine’s Day this year (at least liturgically!) You’re welcome! All kidding aside, February 14th is not only the feast day of St. Valentine, but also of Saints Cyril and Methodius who lived during the ninth century. They are known for preaching Christianity to the Slavic peoples in Central Europe. Their real fame in the Church is that they developed one of the first liturgies that used vernacular (common) language instead of Latin. This caused an uproar with the German bishops, but Pope Adrian II approved the liturgy. These two brothers went to great lengths to defend their use of language. Today it seems like language is taking a beating. Words appear, get deleted, and their meanings get edited on a real-time basis. The only thing that seems to be constant is the acceptance of any foul word imaginable. What worries me more than how our spoken and written language gets abused, is how that language is used against others. We are in a language crisis, but it has more to do with how the language is used than what language is used. Cyril and Methodius devoted their life to bringing the word of God to those who needed to hear the Good News. Even when they were attacked, they held firm in their love for their sisters and brothers and would not be denied sharing the love of Jesus with them. I think there is a great lesson for us in the example of these two men. We are called to deliver the Good News to all of those around us even when it may not be convenient or easy. We need to use a new language…the language of love. Happy Valentine, Cyril, Methodius 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time! FORMED-What better topic but that of LOVE this Valentine weekend? God is Love and all who live in love, live in God. In FORMED there is a series called Signs of Grace. Pay particular attention to the Season 2 of this series. The videos are just a small portion of the curriculum created by trusted theologians and an award-winning film studio at the Augustine Institute. This is a comprehensive sacramental preparation program for children that includes a family faith formation component. The videos are short but provide insights you might not have thought of for your children and the forming of their faith. These have been made available for easy access during these continued challenging times. A long time ago, I was given a wonderful acronym for the word GRACE. We use GRACE often in our faith.
