Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: Call any member if you need a ride to church or have You shall worship the Lord, your God, questions about services provided. and him alone shall you serve." - Lk 4:6a, 7-8 Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD ~from your pastor In looking at Saint Luke’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert, The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture gathers together multiple references from the Fathers of the Church shedding light on what seems, on the surface, to be already clear: Satan waits until Jesus is thirty to tempt him because it is only then that Jesus shows himself to be the Messiah at his baptism (Saint Ephrem the Syrian). The introduction deals with Jesus and his movements as he is led by the Spirit into the wilderness for fasting (Saint Cyril of Alexandria). There is an Adam typology and a Genesis background as Adam is cast out of paradise into the desert, whereas Christ the new Adam goes into the desert on our behalf to come forth from that wilderness of temptation to lead us back to Paradise (Saint Ambrose). The first temptation tempts Jesus to the sin of gluttony that cursed the first Adam (Origen). Adam fell by eating food that was not his to eat; Jesus conquers by not eating food that Satan tempts him with at a moment of great hunger after forty days of fasting (Saint Cyril of Alexandria). Jesus the Son of God incarnate, the Word of God, is the bread of life from heaven (John 6:32, 35) who shall feed the people bread—himself—and he defeats Satan with this heavenly bread, the Word of God (Saint Ambrose). — Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, New Testament, III, Luke, p. 72. Please be reminded about alcoholic beverages and the Ash Wednesday and Good Friday Fasts. I am able to confidently say that alcoholic beverages are not classed with the liquids permitted between meals on days of fast, but rather with the solid foods which break the fast. This admonition is aside from the fact that drinking alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach is never to be recommended. Saint Cyril, Monk, and Saint Methodius, Bishop. Saint Cyril (d. 869) and Saint Methodius (d. 885) were brothers who evangelized Moravia, Bohemia, and Bulgaria. Methodius was consecrated by Pope Adrian II. Pope John Paul II proclaimed the brother Patrons of Europe along with Saint Benedict.
