Order pizza next door and eat it in the back garden. 57 Allen Rd, London N16 8RY Ridley Market Bar After the market has ended, the Ridley Market Bar starts up around 6pm. Red Stripe beer, cocktails, good beats. This bar heats up after around 9pm and by 10 you won’t get in. Go early to catch a booth. Usually has very good DJ’s and the dance floor starts to bump. Bar is in the middle of Ridley Road Market. Walking from the high street entrance, find the bar around half way down on the left. Cafe Oto This is a true gem. During the day Oto is a rather dark laptop cafe serving the more arty oriented local community. In the evening’s Oto is a cutting edge live music venue specialising in Jazz and the experimental side of things. Go there and check it out. 18-22 Ashwin St, London E8 3DL Cafes and Brunch Lazy Social Hipster laptop cafe. The lazy social seems to operate as the local office for a lot of people. Good coffee. Very good cakes. 103 Shacklewell Lane London E8 2EB Fingers Crossed Makes good coffee, has the internet, very good food. Proper Italian restaurant in the costume of a laptop cafe. 247 Amhurst Rd, London N16 7UN The Russet (or cafe cart replacement) The Russet is the hallmark restaurant cafe of this little hipster pocket near Hackney Downs Park. However it’s closed for renovation. But just in front they’ve stuck a really good coffee truck from Floyd’s, so you can get coffee and some cakes there while they renovate. 17 Amhurst Terrace, London E8 2BT Clissold House Cafe Very nice place to drink coffee. Large old manor house with a view over the park. In Clissold Park Newington Table Great food and coffee, amazing baked stuff with French master baker obsessing over his sourdough. Operates as a serious laptop cafe with real dinner in the evening. Incredible brunch. 20 Newington Green, London N16 9PU Lunch and Dinner Lardo bebé Pizza. Heard it’s really good, haven’t tried it. Nice place to sit, decent food. 113 Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 0UD Franco Manca Latest iteration of popular hipster pizza chain. It’s good, it’s ok, the crust is a bit doughy, but it’s still good. If you like a less hipster pizza, go have a beer at the Shakespeare and order pizza next door. 176 Stoke Newington High St, London N16 7JL Mangal 1 There are a million Turkish bbq joints around here. There are 25 Mangals, This is #1, This is the best. On a Friday night you’ll find the world down here. Jerk Chicken at the end, Pakistani food at the beginning (near the high street). Ask them if they’ve got the Haleem… it’s a kind of lentil stew with lamb. Really good. You’ll find it if you want it. Ban Mi Etc. I recently went on a Ban Mi craze. I ate every Ban Mi in London and this is the best one, I’m not joking. Three diligent women produce the freshest Vietnamese sandwiches and Summer rolls. Highlights also include their noodle salad and the bubble tea.. Get it to go and eat it in Clissold park. 37 Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 0NX Trangallan Incredible Spanish restaurant. Lunch specials on Fridays. Otherwise it’s a dinner scene. Booking is usually a good idea, particularly on the weekends. 61 Newington Green, London N16 9PX http://www.trangallan.com/ 020 7359 4988 Parks and Walking Clissold Park Stately park in the originally gentrified part of Hackney. It’s beautiful. Tennis courts (book online) and the cafe is great too. Hackney Downs Our local. Perfectly usable as a park. It’s not Clissold though. Lea Valley Go a little further out and you can spend an entire day in the Lea Valley area. Very cool mix of urban and rural views. Also has an ice skating centre, tennis, and horse riding. Google it. Regent’s Canal A bit to the south of us, the Regent’s Canal snakes across the whole of London. Walk it East to the Victoria park, or West over to Angel. Nice surprises along the way. Victoria park Incredible park. Recently redone. Large, classic, East London paradise. Take a walk there via Regent’s canal, or just get lost on the way. Lot’s of things to run into between here and there. Markets Organic Farmer’s Market (Saturdays) in Stoke Newington Amazing local and organic market every saturday morning. http://www.growingcommunities.org/market/ St Pauls Church, Stoke Newington High St, London N16 7UY Ridley Road Market (Every day except Sunday) NOT organic. Extremely colourful market at the heart of Dalston. Hundreds of stalls of fruits and vegetables, meat, and fish, Fresh Nan and Dahls. This is a busy daily market that is an entire ecosystem of its own. Fix your watch, buy Jamaican salt fish, and then go into the Kingsland shopping centre for out of control kitsch and baubles, or just the Sainsbury’s supermarket for no-nonsense shopping. Broadway Market (Saturdays) in London Fields Broadway market is the height of hipster foodie-ism. This is a wild scene.
