Overview & Purpose The (RPS) summer programs are coordinated at the district level, executed at the school level, and customized to meet the needs of our students. The goal of RPS Summer School programs is to prepare students by ensuring they have a strong foundation for the upcoming school year. Summer learning programs play a critical role in the continued support of students at every age in mastering the academic objectives required to be successful as they move to the next grade level. The extended time offered by RPS summer school programs provides students with additional opportunities filled with rigorous and relevant instruction as well as student-centered learning experiences.

Student Registration

Students are selected and invited by the teachers and principals from each school based on student need. Parents may contact their school with questions regarding summer school.

Programs Elementary School Summer Acceleration Current 2017-2018 Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Students

The Elementary Summer Acceleration program is designed for students who are interested in strengthening their knowledge and skills or have been identified as needing additional support in reading, writing, and/or mathematics by their teacher.

▪ In partnership with Title I, this program is designed for all elementary school students in grades K-5.

▪ Designed for students in grades K-5 who need additional instruction in reading/language arts and/or mathematics grade-level objectives. This program is also designed for students in kindergarten through third grade who did not achieve the passing cut score on the fall PALS assessment.

2 ▪ Students will use the Do the Math program to strengthen skills in Number and Number Sense, Computation and Estimation, Problem Solving, Measurement, Geometry, Patterns, Functions and Algebra.

▪ Students will use the LitCamp literacy program to strengthen reading and writing skills and strategies in the areas of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

▪ All students will be administered a pre-test and post-test in reading/language arts and mathematics.

▪ Each student will participate in STEM activities through Engineering is Elementary. This STEM-based instruction will provide essential STEM concepts through activities that allow students to engage with engineering principles. Children will develop questions, observe details, collect information, form explanations and apply their understanding to the world around them.

Ocean Adventures (OA) Preschool Students Ocean Adventures is a five-week language and literacy enriched summer program that will assist children transitioning to kindergarten. The program blends together classroom routines and learning experiences typically found in kindergarten classrooms. Each week features a different ocean theme.

▪ Classroom teachers work to strengthen early language and literacy skills and concepts that students will take into kindergarten and beyond.

▪ A unique feature of this program is the co-teaching team of a kindergarten teacher and a pre-K teacher to support the successful transition to kindergarten.

▪ Program teachers and staff will bridge home and school by providing ongoing communication to families, take home materials, an ocean theme book, a rotating book bag system, and other family literacy materials.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program ▪ The English as a Second Language (ESL) Summer School Program is designed to address the specific language proficiency needs of Level I and II English Learners (ELs). Instruction will be standards-based and adapted to the student’s current level of English language proficiency.

▪ The program will provide ELs the opportunity to continue practicing English skills over the summer.

▪ The program is student-centered and focuses on reading/language arts and mathematics. Teachers will use a variety of techniques and strategies to present materials such as visual support, cooperative learning, and hands-on activities.

3 ▪ The program will provide daily practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English through whole group, one-on-one, and computer-based instruction.

▪ A variety of classes that provide exceptional education services will be offered to expand learning opportunities for students.

Middle School Summer Acceleration Current 2017-2018 Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade

The Middle School Summer Acceleration program is designed for students who are interested in strengthening their knowledge and skills or have been identified as needing additional support in reading, writing, and mathematics by their teacher.

▪ In partnership with Title I, this program is designed for middle school students in grades 6 - 8.

▪ A pre-test will be given to all students to determine the instructional focus; post-tests will be given to determine the degree of progress achieved during the program.

▪ Students will be grouped by their instructional level for mathematics and reading. Mathematics and Reading will be taught through an engaging approach utilizing authentic texts, hands-on activities, real-world experiences and enrichment opportunities.

5 Summer Bridge: Mathematics In an effort to expand and provide students an opportunity to take Algebra I in middle school, the Summer Bridge course will be offered to selected rising 6th students. The course will focus on a rigorous, fast-paced curriculum aligned to specific 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning. ▪ The goal of the course is to promote independent and collaborative learning that builds the skills required for Algebra I. ▪ Upon successfully completing the summer course and passing (80% or better) the end of summer assessment, students will be eligible for advanced or honors mathematics which leads to Algebra.

For rising 6th grade students, ALL of the following requirements must be met for eligibility: ▪ An overall grade of B or higher in mathematics; ▪ A passing score of 450 or better on the 2018 Grade 5 Mathematics SOL test; ▪ A score of 70% or higher on district-created PowerSchool pre-assessment; and ▪ Teacher recommendation.

End of summer placement will be determined by the following: ▪ Attendance in class at a minimum of 17 of 19 days; ▪ Class assignments, quizzes, and homework grades average of 80% of higher; ▪ A score of 90% or higher on district created PowerSchool post- assessment; and ▪ Teacher recommendation.

▪ Transportation will be offered through a centralized neighborhood bus stop system. ▪ The summer school principal and intern from each school will be responsible for the supervision and management of the program. ▪ Principals will hire, according to teacher allocations, the strongest teachers to participate in the summer program. ▪ Classes will have a 15 to 1 pupil/teacher ratio.

Summer Acceleration - Non-Tuition Designed for students in the 9th -12th grade during 2017 - 2018 school year who passed the course but did not pass the SOL test for that course (scored below 400). Students who complete this program and pass the SOL test will earn the verified credit required for graduation.

High School Tuition The end-of-course tuition program will provide an opportunity for students to earn one standard credit towards graduation and prepare for the End-of-Course SOL Test. This is for students who are interested in taking the course for the first time or for those who have failed the course during the school year and are taking it again. The program objectives are to strengthen academic and basic skills, expand enrollment choices, as well as develop and improve work and study habits.
