Wolf’s History of roman Literature Programme is translated to Spanish since its first edition in 1787. The programme is written in German (not in Latin, as it was usual in this kind of studies), and roman Literature is shown as a national literature. In addition, we study Wolf’s life, his influence in Spain and we offer a commentary on historiographic ideas found in his programme. -

THE NEW REFORM TEMPLE OF BERLIN: CHRISTIAN MUSIC AND JEWISH IDENTITY DURING THE HASKALAH Samuel Teeple A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2018 Committee: Arne Spohr, Advisor Eftychia Papanikolaou © 2018 Samuel Teeple All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Arne Spohr, Advisor During the first decades of the nineteenth century, Israel Jacobson (1768-1828) created a radically new service that drew upon forms of worship most commonly associated with the Protestant faith. After finding inspiration as a student in the ideas of the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, Jacobson became committed to revitalizing and modernizing Judaism. Musically, Jacobson’s service was characterized by its use of songs modeled after Lutheran chorales that were sung by the congregation, organ accompaniment, choral singing, and the elimination of the traditional music of the synagogue, a custom that had developed over more than a millennium. The music of the service worked in conjunction with Protestant-style sermons, the use of both German and Hebrew, and the church- and salon-like environments in which Jacobson’s services were held. The music, liturgy, and ceremonial of this new mode of worship demonstrated an affinity with German Protestantism and bourgeois cultural values while also maintaining Judaism’s core beliefs and morals. In this thesis, I argue that Jacobson’s musical agenda enabled a new realization of German-Jewish identity among wealthy, acculturated Jews. Drawing upon contemporary reports, letters, musical collections, and similar sources, I place the music of Reform within its wider historical, political, and social context within the well-documented services at the Jacobstempel in Seesen and the New Reform Temple in Berlin. -

1 JEWISH WOMEN OF THE BERLIN SALONS The Berlin salons which developed in the late eighteenth century owed both their existence and the form of their development to Jewish women. These early salons were the result of a unique interrelation between the German enlightenment and Haskalah on the one hand and, on the other, young, educated Jewish women from well-to-do families, who were searching for a new role in life outside the patriarchal structures of their families. These salons have variously been criticized as a symptom of failing Jewish tradition or welcomed as a phenomenon of emancipation and acculturation. Whatever one’s attitude, their importance as highlights of the salon culture and for the process of women’s emancipation in Germany cannot be denied. While in Paris by the mid-eighteenth century, salons had become a traditional social institution and even bourgeois ladies had advanced to be salonnières, Berlin society, in comparison, was very old-fashioned. The social classes remained strictly separated (with a very exclusive, but largely poor aristocracy at the top); Jews were discriminated against by Prussian law and socially stigmatized. It took a long time for an educated middle class to develop, especially as there was no university in Berlin until 1810. Middle-class women were not supposed to engage in cultural activities, but only in their religious and household duties. The rich but small Jewish upper class in Berlin had a protected status in exchange for their financial and economic services to the crown. Their lifestyle after the end of the Seven Years’ War (1763) became aristocratic. -

For a long time Heyne was neglected within classical scholars’ understanding of their own history, yet in his own age he was something of a European intellectual celebrity, and even at the end of the nineteenth century Friedrich Paulsen could identify him as ‘indisputably the leader in the field of classical studies in Germany during the second half of the eighteenth century’ (1885: 441). -

Between "Bildung" and "Wissenschaft": The 19th-Century German Ideal of Scientific Education by Bas van Bommel Prior to the 19th century, poetry, rhetoric, historiography and moral philosophy were considered particularly valuable to humane education, as they transmitted knowledge of beauty, goodness and truth. These so‐called "fine sciences" ("schöne Wissenschaften") were discredited by Immanuel Kant, who no longer recognised values as objects of scientific knowledge. Kant advanced an ideal of "rigorous science" entailing a novel concept of "scientific education" ("wissenschaftliche Bildung"): through methodically exploring the harmonious totality of human knowledge, the human mind would take on a correspondingly harmonious form. In the course of the 19th century, the disciplinary differentiation and specialisation that resulted from the new concept of rigorous science proved ever more difficult to reconcile with the educational ideal that had once been its motivating force. Big crowds accompanied them, and no wonder: they were making their way to a dramatic public occasion – a scientific counterpart to the hangings at Tyburn that drew enthusiastic spectators in droves in the same period. A solar eclipse was about to take place. Two rival astronomers, William Whiston and Edmond Halley, had predicted where it would reach totality. As he had done once before, in 1715, Halley published in advance a map of the shadow that the eclipse would project on the earth, as seen from above – a brilliant feat of visual imagination and a superb disposal of quantitative data. Whiston held that the eclipse would not be total anywhere near London. Halley, by contrast, included Windsor in the zone of totality. Who won? No one knew for certain. ‘Expecting to see the sun wholly obscured,’ Logan recalled, ‘we returned in a state of frustration. For the heavens favoured Halley, since they were covered by clouds. Still, we considered it certain that the moon did not block off all of the sun’s light, as Halley had predicted.’ Four days later, attending a meeting of the Royal Society, Logan heard Isaac Newton ask Halley to discuss the eclipse. -

My M.A. dissertation compared Pound’s translation and Heidegger’s transposition of the figure of Odyssean return (Pound et Heidegger, lecteurs d’Homère, Université de Montréal, 1992). I subsequently requested and was granted permission to pursue doctoral work focusing on Homer’s Odyssey – which involved transferring to the University of Geneva. The turn to the field of Homeric studies brought along the inevitable: not only the systematic reading of the original in canonical modern editions, but also an inquiry into the history of these editions and of the correlative Homeric Question. This led me to Wolf’s Prolegomena – and to the question of the manuscript tradition. A first draft of the doctoral dissertation comprised two relatively distinct parts: an overview of the philological debate on Homer, and a re-reading of selected passages of the Odyssey, especially those that poetise figures of language, humanity and memory. There only seemed to lack a brief middle part, bridging what was sensed as a gap between the two. Paul de Man provided that bridge – more specifically, his approach to reading and history, as evinced in his lecture on Walter Benjamin’s “Aufgabe des Übersetzers”. -

She left behind an enormous corpus of books that cover the range of topics of ontology, epistemology, political theory, linguistic analysis and historiography. She ignited debates that still rage on the Holocaust, civil rights, the ideal human life and the future of humankind. She was a Jew by birth and a Zionist by vocation, yet her writings transcend both characterizations. Arendt never renounced her Judaism, although she was entirely secular and distanced herself from her origins, not in rejection, but in an attempt to become an authentic actor/intellectual in the modern world. In an exchange of letters with her dissertation adviser, Karl Jaspers, Arendt explained: She was not trying to reify the “fate of Jews” by rooting Rahel in determinism of social condition and inheritance. Her work, instead, was a “preliminary” effort to indicate that a “certain possibility” which she “tentatively” called “fatefulness,” emerges in the process of conscious distancing from Jewish identity in order to recapture it more fully. It is the historical givenness of the Jewish people, which can be objectified so that it can be understood and reappropriated. This fatefulness . can occur only in a separation from Judaism.... An objectification is in fact there in a certain sense, but not an objectification of Jewish experience .. -

Nietzsche’s scepticism and apparent embrace of aestheticism have fueled the belief among historians that Nietzsche’s philosophy anticipated a postmodern understanding of history. This project seeks to challenge the proto-postmodernist reading of Nietzsche’s philosophy of history by arguing that Nietzsche’s thought underwent a significant change after the termination of his friendship with the German composer Richard Wagner. Utilizing Nietzsche’s personal correspondence, material from his many notebooks, records of the books he read and owned, as well as the works he published, this thesis attempts to unravel the proto- postmodern reading of Nietzsche’s philosophy in favour of a naturalist interpretation of his thought.
